Book excerpt: The seventeenth Annual Space Control Conference sponsored by ESC and co-hosted by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and the AF Research Laboratory was held on 13, 14, and 15 April 1999. The purpose of this series of conferences is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of space control issues. This proceedings documents those presentations from this conference that were received in time for pre-conference publication. The papers contained were reproduced directly from copies supplied by their authors (with minor mechanical changes where necessary). It is hoped that this publication will enhance the utility of the conference.

Book excerpt: This book, now at the third edition, addresses the main control aspects in underwater manipulation tasks. The mathematical model with significant impact on the control strategy is discussed. The problem of controlling a 6-degrees-of-freedoms autonomous underwater vehicle is deeply investigated and a survey of fault detection/tolerant strategies for unmanned underwater vehicles is provided. Inverse kinematics, dynamic and interaction control for underwater vehicle-manipulator systems are then discussed. The code used to generate most of the numerical simulations is made available and briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: This book presents and develops new reinforcement learning methods that enable fast and robust learning on robots in real-time. Robots have the potential to solve many problems in society, because of their ability to work in dangerous places doing necessary jobs that no one wants or is able to do. One barrier to their widespread deployment is that they are mainly limited to tasks where it is possible to hand-program behaviors for every situation that may be encountered. For robots to meet their potential, they need methods that enable them to learn and adapt to novel situations that they were not programmed for. Reinforcement learning (RL) is a paradigm for learning sequential decision making processes and could solve the problems of learning and adaptation on robots. This book identifies four key challenges that must be addressed for an RL algorithm to be practical for robotic control tasks. These RL for Robotics Challenges are: 1) it must learn in very few samples; 2) it must learn in domains with continuous state features; 3) it must handle sensor and/or actuator delays; and 4) it should continually select actions in real time. This book focuses on addressing all four of these challenges. In particular, this book is focused on time-constrained domains where the first challenge is critically important. In these domains, the agent’s lifetime is not long enough for it to explore the domains thoroughly, and it must learn in very few samples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book categorizes the wide area of data-driven model-free controllers, reveals the exact benefits of such controllers, gives the in-depth theory and mathematical proofs behind them, and finally discusses their applications. Each chapter includes a section for presenting the theory and mathematical definitions of one of the above mentioned algorithms. The second section of each chapter is dedicated to the examples and applications of the corresponding control algorithms in practical engineering problems. This book proposes to avoid complex mathematical equations, being generic as it includes several types of data-driven model-free controllers, such as Iterative Feedback Tuning controllers, Model-Free Controllers (intelligent PID controllers), Model-Free Adaptive Controllers, model-free sliding mode controllers, hybrid model‐free and model‐free adaptive‐Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning controllers, hybrid model-free and model-free adaptive fuzzy controllers and cooperative model-free controllers. The book includes the topic of optimal model-free controllers, as well. The optimal tuning of model-free controllers is treated in the chapters that deal with Iterative Feedback Tuning and Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning. Moreover, the extension of some model-free control algorithms to the consensus and formation-tracking problem of multi-agent dynamic systems is provided. This book can be considered as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as a professional reference for industrial and academic researchers, attracting the readers from both industry and academia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computer methods, new applications, new philosophies. . . , new challenges. Much of this development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of such new work in all aspects of industrial control for widerand rapid dissemination. Benchmarking is a technique first applied by Rank Xerox in the late 1970s for business processes. As a subject in the commercial arena, benchmarking thrives with, for example, a European Benchmarking Forum. It has taken rather longer for benchmarking to make the transfer to the technical domain and even now the subject is making a slow headway. Akey research step in this direction was taken by Harris (1989) who used minimum variance control as a benchmark for controller loop assessment. This contribution opened up the area and a significant specialist literature has now developed. Significant support for the methodologywas given by Honeywell who have controller assessment routines in their process control applications software; therefore, it is timely to welcome a (first) monograph on controller performance assessment by Biao Huang and Sirish Shah to the Advances in Industrial Control series.
