Book excerpt: Flexibility is as acceptable an objective for today's industrial community as is automation. Thus, the title of this conference proceedings volume - Flexible Automation - reflects an added emphasis to the usual industrial automation. As with general automation that has impacted every component of the manufacturing office and plant, the identity of flexible automation can possess various forms and functions. The papers in this volume have been grouped into two main categories. One category deals with implementation of so-called "intelligent manufacturing". This means use of algorithmic methods and artificial intelligence approaches to various problems encountered in practical factory automation tasks. The placement of papers into five chapters of this part cannot be very precise, due to multidisciplinary nature and constant rapid change of the field. The categories are arranged starting from problems of enhancement of current factory settings, and followed by the papers addressing more specific issues of production planning, process technology and product engineering. The fifth chapter contains papers on the very important aspects of factory automation - problems of design, simulation, operation and monitoring of manufacturing cells.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Concurrent Engineering Research Center (CERC) at West Virginia University, "the concurrent engineering (CE) is a rapid simultaneous approach where research and development, design, manufacturing and support are carried out in parallel". The mission of concurrent engineering is to reduce time to market, improve total quality and lower cost for products or systems developed and supported by large organizations. The purpose of the concurrent design methodology is to let the designer know the consequences of his design decisions in the manufacturing and assembly stages as well as in subsequent operations. Design for manufacture and assembly, design for reliability and testability, CAD/CAM/CAE, knowledge based systems, cost analysis and advanced material technology are the major constituents of concurrent engineering. The need for concurrent engineering can be justified from the fact that in every production cycle, the design phase approximately takes 5 to 10% of the total cycle, but overall it influences 80% of the production cycle. This volume contains articles from a wide spectrum dealing with concepts of concurrent engineering. The importance of the knowledge-based systems in the CE environment is significant as they provide the common platform to achieve the same level of expertise to the designers and manufacturers throughout the organization for the specific task. Their role in "do it right the first time" is very important in providing aid to the designers and manufacturers to optimize the design and manufacturing setups for a cost effectiveness and reduced production time.

Book Synopsis Integrated Design of a Product Family and Its Assembly System by : Pierre De Lit
Download or read book Integrated Design of a Product Family and Its Assembly System written by Pierre De Lit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Design of a Product Family and Its Assembly System presents an integrated approach for the design of a product family and its assembly system, whose main principles consider the product family as a fictitious unique product for which the assembly system is to be devised. It imposes assembly and operation constraints as late as possible in the design process to get liberties in the system design, and adapts the product family at each design stage to integrate the new constraints related to the successive design choices. Integrated Design of a Product Family and Its Assembly System is an important, must-have book for researchers and Ph.D. students in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, and Manufacturing, as well as practitioners in the Design, Planning and Production departments in the manufacturing industry. Integrated Design of a Product Family and Its Assembly System is also suitable for use as a textbook in courses such as Computer-Aided Design, Concurrent Engineering, Design for Assembly, Process Planning, and Integrated Design.
Book Synopsis Evolutionary Algorithms for Solving Multi-Objective Problems by : Carlos Coello Coello
Download or read book Evolutionary Algorithms for Solving Multi-Objective Problems written by Carlos Coello Coello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and practitioners alike are increasingly turning to search, op timization, and machine-learning procedures based on natural selection and natural genetics to solve problems across the spectrum of human endeavor. These genetic algorithms and techniques of evolutionary computation are solv ing problems and inventing new hardware and software that rival human designs. The Kluwer Series on Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary Computation pub lishes research monographs, edited collections, and graduate-level texts in this rapidly growing field. Primary areas of coverage include the theory, implemen tation, and application of genetic algorithms (GAs), evolution strategies (ESs), evolutionary programming (EP), learning classifier systems (LCSs) and other variants of genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC). The series also pub lishes texts in related fields such as artificial life, adaptive behavior, artificial immune systems, agent-based systems, neural computing, fuzzy systems, and quantum computing as long as GEC techniques are part of or inspiration for the system being described. This encyclopedic volume on the use of the algorithms of genetic and evolu tionary computation for the solution of multi-objective problems is a landmark addition to the literature that comes just in the nick of time. Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) are receiving increasing and unprecedented attention. Researchers and practitioners are finding an irresistible match be tween the popUlation available in most genetic and evolutionary algorithms and the need in multi-objective problems to approximate the Pareto trade-off curve or surface.

Book Synopsis New Optimization Techniques in Engineering by : Godfrey C. Onwubolu
Download or read book New Optimization Techniques in Engineering written by Godfrey C. Onwubolu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-21 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, general-purpose optimization techniques such as Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms, have become standard optimization techniques. Concerted research efforts have been made recently in order to invent novel optimization techniques for solving real life problems, which have the attributes of memory update and population-based search solutions. The book describes a variety of these novel optimization techniques which in most cases outperform the standard optimization techniques in many application areas. New Optimization Techniques in Engineering reports applications and results of the novel optimization techniques considering a multitude of practical problems in the different engineering disciplines – presenting both the background of the subject area and the techniques for solving the problems.

Book excerpt: The total integration of the process of designing, manufacturing, and supporting a product from the earliest conceptual phase to the time it is removed from service remains an unfulfilled dream. Yet, when we look at the enormity of the process of integration even for the most simply conceived and manufactured items, we can recognize that substantial progress has been and is being made. It is our nature to be dissatisfied with near term progress, but when we realize how short a time the tools to do that integration have been available, the progress is clearly noteworthy - considering the multitudes of subjects we have to deal with. Most of the integration problems we confront today are multidisciplinary in nature. They require not only the knowledge and experience in a variety of fields but also good cooperation from different disciplined organizations to adequately comprehend and solve such problems. In Volume I we have many examples that reflect the current state of the art in integration of engineer ing and production processes. The papers for Volume I have been arranged in a more or less logical order of conceptual. design, computer-based modeling, analysis, production, and manufacturing. Chapter I is devoted to those with a design and geometrie modeling emphasis; Chapter II is devoted to an engineering analysis emphasis; and Chapter III to a production/manufacturing emphasis.
