Book Synopsis Nearshore Sediment Transport by : R.J. Seymour
Download or read book Nearshore Sediment Transport written by R.J. Seymour and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the efforts of over a hundred individuals who planned and executed the NSTS field experiments, analyzed the billions of data points, and distilled their findings and insights into the summaries found here. Because these experiments were of a scope that will seldom, if ever, be duplicated, and because the program brought together many of the foremost field experimentalists in this country, we all felt from the beginning that it was important to preserve the outcome. This was done in two ways. First, the raw data were made available to any interested investigator within 18 months of the completion of each experiment. Secondly, both the methodology of the experiments and the findings from them were codified in the form of a monograph. This book is that result. I have had the occasion recently (Sediments '87 Proceedings, Vol. 1, pp. 642-651) to assess the NSTS performance. I found that we made giant strides in our understanding of the surf zone hydrodynamics --far more than our fondest expectations at the beginning. We were able to do less than we had hoped about the response of the sediment, largely because of a limited ability to measure it at a point. As I reported in the Sediments '87 assessment, we established a new state of the art in measurement techniques and we demonstrated the effectiveness of large, multi-investigator, instrument-intensive experiments for studying nearshore processes.

Book Synopsis Wave Overtopping Equation by : J. Richard Weggel
Download or read book Wave Overtopping Equation written by J. Richard Weggel and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some available data on wave overtopping by monochromatic waves were reevaluated before publication of the Shore Protection Manual (U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, Coastal Engineering Research Center, 1973). The analysis of earlier data was made in order to summarize and present it in a more readily usable form. This paper provides empirical equations which can be used to predict overtopping rates for various structure slopes and structure types if accurate predictions of runup are available.

Book Synopsis Stability of Tidal Inlets by : P. Bruun
Download or read book Stability of Tidal Inlets written by P. Bruun and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, 23: Stability of Tidal Inlets: Theory and Engineering focuses on all aspects related to tidal inlets on littoral drift shores where freshwater flow is small or non-existing. The selection first tackles the development and configuration of tidal inlets and inlet hydraulics. Discussions focus on flow dynamics and nearshore transport, combinations of waves and currents, sediment transport and storage in the tidal entrance, offsets of tidal inlets, natural inlet regimen, migration of inlets, and origin of tidal inlets. The manuscript then examines sediment transport in tidal inlets, stability of tidal inlets on littoral drift shores, and design and improvements of coastal inlets. Topics cover ocean entrance, overall stability condition, hydraulic and sedimentary principles, non-scouring channels, transport of sediments in wave agitated waters, and sediment transport by combined wave and current action. The publication explores improvements by structures, including natural bypassing, types of improvement, and bypassing by structures and bypassing plants or arrangements. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in the stability of tidal inlets.
Book Synopsis Marine Structures Engineering: Specialized Applications by : Gregory Tsinker
Download or read book Marine Structures Engineering: Specialized Applications written by Gregory Tsinker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Structures Engineering is designed to help engineers meet the growing worldwide demand for construction of new ports and the modernization of existing ports and terminals. It provides an authoritative guide to the design, construction, rehabilitation, repair, and maintenance of port and harbor structures. Each chapter is self-contained, allowing readers to access specific information. The Author draws on his extensive experience in offshore structure and port engineering to demonstrate evaluation, rehabilitation, repair, and maintenance of in-service marine structures. Also covered in detail are state-of-the-art approaches to: *marine structures in cold regions, with special attention to the role of ice loads, permafrost, and other ice effects *shiplifts, marine railways, shipways, and dry docks *offshore moorings *floating breakwaters *marinas *structures that protect bridge piers from ship impact. Offering practical information on all aspects of marine structures, this book serves as an indispensable resource to all engineers and professionals involved in design, construction, maintenance, and modernization of ports and harbors.
Download or read book The Tender Ship written by SQUIRES and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsurprisingly, Arthur Squires presents us with a remarkable book. Unsurprisingly because this is a remarkable man - accomplished engineer, gifted musician, sensitive humanist, talented teacher, analytical observer, felicitous writer - altogether a man with the kind of breadth and depth that we rarely produce these days, and even more rarely tolerate in an age that worships specialization. Professor Squires has done a great many things in his life and has thought deeply about his experiences. The book that follows radiates not only that ongoing process of reflection, but also a dazzling range of reading and a lifetime of conversations with colleagues and bosses, mentors and students, wise men and fools. What he has produced is that rare specimen indeed - a book that is a pleasure to read and that needs to be read by every informed citizen. The Tender Ship focuses on the intersection of the most vital questions that confront American society - or indeed any modern, industrial society, however defined. No historical example exists of a society that has reached such a status without creating bureaucracies to manage its public and private sectors. Maintenance of national well-being depends, at least in part, on a nation's ability to generate and adopt the technology necessary to maintain economic competitiveness and, in the case of the United States, a credible force with which to defend ourselves and our allies.

Book Synopsis Concept Study for Military Port Design Using Natural Processes by : Carolyn Dry
Download or read book Concept Study for Military Port Design Using Natural Processes written by Carolyn Dry and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New concepts for port design using indigenous natural processes are formulated and proposed which will provide cost effective solutions to the problem of port design in the new world of shifting defense realities. The concepts proposed are: (1) building the ports structure with electrolytic mineral accretion and dialytic ice formation, (2) cables and energy transmission from sea water, and (3) drydocks, lift bridges, various off-loading and port facilities by osmotic pump action is enhanced by counter current multipliers and exchangers. Desert land port facilities are accreted, cooled, and supplied with water by the action of evaporation osmotic pumps. This report has a large bibliography. (Author).
