Download or read book Functional Imaging by Controlled Nonlinear Optical Phenomena written by Kazuyoshi Itoh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrafast lasers allow high-precision imaging and manipulation for biological and medical applications. Nonlinear optical microscopy has provided researchers with unique possibilities of three-dimensional imaging of biological cells and tissues. Nonlinear optical imaging technique is a rapidly emerging research area with widespread fundamental research and clinical applications. Nonlinear optical imaging allows both structural and functional imaging with cellular level resolution imaging in biological systems. The introduction of endogenous or exogenous probes can selectively enhance contrast for molecular targets in a living cell as well as supply functional information on processes. With the aim to control nonlinear optical processes and to obtain functional images, nonlinear optical processes can be controlled by photo-controlled probes and/or parameters of ultrafast laser pulses, such as time, space, polarization, and phase. This book gives an overview of the nonlinear optical process by ultrafast laser pulses and explains how the basics of nonlinear optical microscopy led to the most advanced techniques of photo-controlled nonlinear optical microscopy.

By combining optical design and molecular genetics, a new series of tools is being developed and successfully applied together with classical probes. Novel labelling strategies, better software for image enhancement and analysis are now available and allow image acquisition with greater speed and precision. This lab manual, intended as for bench-top use, is suitable for both scientists and graduate students, combines an update on the most advanced imaging procedures with detailed protocols. Examples, cleverly selected from the wide repertoire of cell pyhsiology, cover different functional aspects such as distribution of multiple ions, electrical activity, exo-endocytosis, gene expression, and the cell cycle.

Book Synopsis Fungi in the Environment by : Geoffrey Gadd
Download or read book Fungi in the Environment written by Geoffrey Gadd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are of fundamental importance in the terrestrial environment. They have roles as decomposers, plant pathogens, symbionts, and in elemental cycles. Fungi are often dominant, and in soil can comprise the largest pool of biomass (including other microorganisms and invertebrates). They also play a role in maintenance of soil structure due to their filamentous growth habit and exopolymer production. Despite their important roles in the biosphere, fungi are frequently neglected within broader environmental and microbiological spheres. Additionally, mycological interests can be somewhat fragmented between traditional subject boundaries. This multi-disciplinary volume explores the roles and importance of fungi in the environment. Particular emphasis is given to major research advances made in recent years as a result of molecular and genomic approaches, and in cell imaging and biology. Drawing together microbiologists, mycologists, and environmental scientists, this work is a unique account of modern environmental mycology, and a pivotal contribution to the field.

Book excerpt: The beginnings of human civili zation can be traced back to the time , ne- ly 12 ,000 years ago , when th e early humans gradually ch anged from a life of hunting and gathering food , to producing food. This beginning of pri- tive agriculture ensured a dependable supply of food , and fostered the living together of people in groups and the development of s o c i e ty. During th is time, plant s e e ds were recognized a s a valuable s o ur c e of food and nutrition , and began to be used for growing plants for food. Ever s i n c e , plant seeds have played an important role in the development of the human civilization . Even today, s e e ds of a few crop s p e c i e s , s uc h as the cereals and legume s, are the primary s o u r c e of most human food , and the predominant commodity in international agriculture. Owing to their great importance as food for human s and in international trade , seeds have been a favorite object of s t u d y by developmental biologists and physiologi sts , nutritionist s and chem i sts .
