Each volume in the series shall be devoted to the mathematical analysis that has been applied or potentially applicable to the solutions of scientific, engineering, and social problems. For the past twenty five years, there has been an explosion of interest in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. Mathematical techniques developed during this period have been applied to important nonlinear problems ranging from physics and chemistry to ecology and economics. All these developments have made dynamical systems theory an important and attractive branch of mathematics to scientists in many disciplines. This rich mathematical subject has been partially represented in this collection of 45 papers by some of the leading researchers in the area. This volume contains 45 state-of-art articles on the mathematical theory of dynamical systems by leading researchers. It is hoped that this collection will lead new direction in this field.Contributors: B Abraham-Shrauner, V Afraimovich, N U Ahmed, B Aulbach, E J Avila-Vales, F Battelli, J M Blazquez, L Block, T A Burton, R S Cantrell, C Y Chan, P Collet, R Cushman, M Denker, F N Diacu, Y H Ding, N S A El-Sharif, J E Fornaess, M Frankel, R Galeeva, A Galves, V Gershkovich, M Girardi, L Gotusso, J Graczyk, Y Hino, I Hoveijn, V Hutson, P B Kahn, J Kato, J Keesling, S Keras, V Kolmanovskii, N V Minh, V Mioc, K Mischaikow, M Misiurewicz, J W Mooney, M E Muldoon, S Murakami, M Muraskin, A D Myshkis, F Neuman, J C Newby, Y Nishiura, Z Nitecki, M Ohta, G Osipenko, N Ozalp, M Pollicott, Min Qu, Donal O-Regan, E Romanenko, V Roytburd, L Shaikhet, J Shidawara, N Sibony, W-H Steeb, C Stoica, G Swiatek, T Takaishi, N D Thai Son, R Triggiani, A E Tuma, E H Twizell, M Urbanski; T D Van, A Vanderbauwhede, A Veneziani, G Vickers, X Xiang, T Young, Y Zarmi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precise dynamic models of processes are required for many applications, ranging from control engineering to the natural sciences and economics. Frequently, such precise models cannot be derived using theoretical considerations alone. Therefore, they must be determined experimentally. This book treats the determination of dynamic models based on measurements taken at the process, which is known as system identification or process identification. Both offline and online methods are presented, i.e. methods that post-process the measured data as well as methods that provide models during the measurement. The book is theory-oriented and application-oriented and most methods covered have been used successfully in practical applications for many different processes. Illustrative examples in this book with real measured data range from hydraulic and electric actuators up to combustion engines. Real experimental data is also provided on the Springer webpage, allowing readers to gather their first experience with the methods presented in this book. Among others, the book covers the following subjects: determination of the non-parametric frequency response, (fast) Fourier transform, correlation analysis, parameter estimation with a focus on the method of Least Squares and modifications, identification of time-variant processes, identification in closed-loop, identification of continuous time processes, and subspace methods. Some methods for nonlinear system identification are also considered, such as the Extended Kalman filter and neural networks. The different methods are compared by using a real three-mass oscillator process, a model of a drive train. For many identification methods, hints for the practical implementation and application are provided. The book is intended to meet the needs of students and practicing engineers working in research and development, design and manufacturing.

Book excerpt: In recent years significant applications of systems and control theory have been witnessed in diversed areas such as physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, management and finance. In particular the most interesting applications have taken place in areas such as aerospace, buildings and space structure, suspension bridges, artificial heart, chemotherapy, power system, hydrodynamics and computer communication networks. There are many prominent areas of systems and control theory that include systems governed by linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations, systems governed by partial differential equations including their stochastic counter parts and, above all, systems governed by abstract differential and functional differential equations and inclusions on Banach spaces, including their stochastic counterparts. The objective of this book is to present a small segment of theory and applications of systems and control governed by ordinary differential equations and inclusions. It is expected that any reader who has absorbed the materials presented here would have no difficulty to reach the core of current research.

Book excerpt: This monograph develops a generalised energy flow theory to investigate non-linear dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations in phase space and often met in various science and engineering fields. Important nonlinear phenomena such as, stabilities, periodical orbits, bifurcations and chaos are tack-led and the corresponding energy flow behaviors are revealed using the proposed energy flow approach. As examples, the common interested nonlinear dynamical systems, such as, Duffing’s oscillator, Van der Pol’s equation, Lorenz attractor, Rössler one and SD oscillator, etc, are discussed. This monograph lights a new energy flow research direction for nonlinear dynamics. A generalised Matlab code with User Manuel is provided for readers to conduct the energy flow analysis of their nonlinear dynamical systems. Throughout the monograph the author continuously returns to some examples in each chapter to illustrate the applications of the discussed theory and approaches. The book can be used as an undergraduate or graduate textbook or a comprehensive source for scientists, researchers and engineers, providing the statement of the art on energy flow or power flow theory and methods.

Book excerpt: A Dynamic Systems Approach to Development explores the value of dynamical systems principles for solving the enduring puzzles of development, including the ultimate source of change, the problems of continuity and discontinuities, and nonlinear outcomes and individual differences. What do laser lights, crystals, walking, reaching, and concepts have in common? All are complex dynamic systems. Over the last decade, the burgeoning fields of synergetics and nonlinear dynamics have shown in mathematically precise ways how such complex systems can produce emergent order from the cooperation of many simpler elements. A Dynamic Systems Approach to Development explores the value of dynamical systems principles for solving the enduring puzzles of development, including the ultimate source of change, the problems of continuity and discontinuities, and nonlinear outcomes and individual differences. This companion volume to the forthcoming A Dynamic Systems Approach to the Development of Cognition and Action shows how the ideas of dynamic systems may form the basis for a new theory of human development. The problems considered include areas of motor development, perceptual and cognitive development, and social development. The use of dynamic systems ranges from the metaphorical to the rigorously mathematical, but in all cases the contributions present a step forward in developmental theory.

Book excerpt: Generalized Trigonometric and Hyperbolic Functions highlights, to those in the area of generalized trigonometric functions, an alternative path to the creation and analysis of these classes of functions. Previous efforts have started with integral representations for the inverse generalized sine functions, followed by the construction of the associated cosine functions, and from this, various properties of the generalized trigonometric functions are derived. However, the results contained in this book are based on the application of both geometrical phase space and dynamical systems methodologies. Features Clear, direct construction of a new set of generalized trigonometric and hyperbolic functions Presentation of why x2+y2 = 1, and related expressions, may be interpreted in three distinct ways All the constructions, proofs, and derivations can be readily followed and understood by students, researchers, and professionals in the natural and mathematical sciences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential equations are the basis for models of any physical systems that exhibit smooth change. This book combines much of the material found in a traditional course on ordinary differential equations with an introduction to the more modern theory of dynamical systems. Applications of this theory to physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering are shown through examples in such areas as population modeling, fluid dynamics, electronics, and mechanics.? Differential Dynamical Systems begins with coverage of linear systems, including matrix algebra; the focus then shifts to foundational material on nonlinear differential equations, making heavy use of the contraction-mapping theorem. Subsequent chapters deal specifically with dynamical systems concepts?flow, stability, invariant manifolds, the phase plane, bifurcation, chaos, and Hamiltonian dynamics. This new edition contains several important updates and revisions throughout the book. Throughout the book, the author includes exercises to help students develop an analytical and geometrical understanding of dynamics. Many of the exercises and examples are based on applications and some involve computation; an appendix offers simple codes written in Maple?, Mathematica?, and MATLAB? software to give students practice with computation applied to dynamical systems problems.
