Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormones and the Aging Process covers the proceedings of the conference held at Arden House in Harriman, New York on the role of hormones in aging. The book focuses on the influence of hormones to the aging process, including steroid metabolism, castration, and hormonal regulation. The selection first offers information on the effect of aging on steroid metabolism as reflected in plasma levels; role of thyroid in the aging process; and urinary excretion of gonadotropin as a function of age. The book also takes a look at hormonal regulation of muscle development and steroids and protein metabolism in experimental animals. Discussions focus on the effects of castration, steroids in recovery from protein depletion, androgens and protein metabolism, and protein nutrition and hormone action. The publication examines the androgenic and anabolic action of testosterone derivatives and the effects of hormones on protein metabolism, including growth and thyroid hormones, testosterone, insulin, and adrenal cortical steroids. The book also ponders on the role of steroids in calcium and phosphorus metabolism; mechanisms regulating fluid and electrolyte metabolism; and sex steroid replacement in aging individuals. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the relationship of hormones and the aging process.

Download or read book Hormones and Aging written by Paola S. Timiras and published by CRC-Press. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormones and Aging describes changes with aging in a wide spectrum of secretory functions including: Hormones from classical endocrine glands and hormone-like secretions Chemical mediators from diffuse cells within several systems, particularly the nervous and the immune systems The book is comprised of three parts. The first reviews changes in hormonal functions that occur in humans from youth to old age under conditions of normal aging. It focuses on the menopause, changes in body composition and muscle mass, decline in metabolic rate, and alterations of oxidative metabolism. The second part examines the pathological consequences of aging associated hormonal changes. It focuses on diabetes, osteoporosis, altered responses to stress, and cancer. The pathophysiology of these diseases is evaluated in the light of state-of-the-art biomedical advances, including molecular and genetic advances. Major preventive and therapeutic interventions are outlined, in particular the role of hormonal replacement therapy, growth promoting and cancer inhibiting substances, and influence of nutrition. The third part discusses the relation of hormones to other systems, such as the nervous and immune systems, and their implications for the etiology of the aging process itself. It focuses on neuroendocrine and immunoendocrine theories of aging, molecular mechanisms of senescent cell responses, and receptor responses. The book primarily considers humans, but also provides in vivo studies from uni- and pluri-cellular complex animal organisms, as well as from cultured cells in vitro. Contributors provide a lucid, easily understood, and well-organized text that presents a concise review of a large variety of topics, integrating basic and clinical information. It also contains 141 illustrations and tables. Hormones and Aging represents a timely and useful contribution to a rapidly expanding field of chemical mediators and aging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first complete history of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), Elizabeth Siegel Watkins illuminates the complex and changing relationship between the medical treatment of menopause and cultural conceptions of aging. Describing the development, spread, and shifting role of HRT in America from the early twentieth century to the present, Watkins explores how the interplay between science and society shaped the dissemination and reception of HRT and how the medicalization—and subsequent efforts toward the demedicalization—of menopause and aging affected the role of estrogen as a medical therapy. Telling the story from multiple perspectives—physicians, pharmaceutical manufacturers, government regulators, feminist health activists, and the media, as well as women as patients and consumers—she reveals the striking parallels between estrogen’s history as a medical therapy and broad shifts in the role of medicine in an aging society. Today, information about HRT is almost always accompanied by a laundry list of health risks. While physicians and pharmaceutical companies have striven to develop the safest possible treatment for the symptoms of menopause and aging, many specialists question whether HRT should be prescribed at all. Drawing from a wide range of scholarly research, archival records, and interviews, The Estrogen Elixir provides valuable historical context for one of the most pressing debates in contemporary medicine.

Book excerpt: It has been known for over 40 years that GH-deficient-children benefit from replacement with the hormone. But GH, essential for longitudinal growth, also plays a role after completion of final height. With the introduction of biosynthetic human GH 20 years ago, the use of GH was no longer restricted to severe growth retardation in hypopituitary children. This book will take the reader behind the myths of GH and into the real world of clinical endocrinology. The contributions stem from recognized clinicians and scientists who have been working in the field for decades. The contents encompass traditional end points of GH therapy such as body composition, bone biology and physical performance. Attention is also devoted to diagnostic aspects and side effects. Additional features range from clinical epidemiology to quality of life, and novel areas such as the impact of traumatic brain injury on pituitary function are also covered. The present volume of Frontiers of Hormone Research is essential reading for health care professionals interested in clinical endocrinology and GH.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceeding of tropical agriculture is a proceeding of papers presented at the International Conference on Tropical Agriculture. Sustainability of agriculture production system is an important issue in the world, which includes all aspects of sustainable criteria, such as technical, socio-economic, and ecological aspects. This book covers sustainable tropical agriculture, sustainable tropical fisheries, sustainable tropical animal production, sustainable tropical forestry, tropical animal health, and Innovative and Emerging Food Technology and Management. The most common, challenging issues in plant, animal and fisheries production in the tropics are climate change, inefficiency production system, low technological innovation, decreasing environment quality, and the outbreak risk of pest and diseases. These issues are closely linked to the socio-economic condition of farmers as small-scale farms are dominant in this area. In addition, post-harvest technology is crucial to maintaining the high quality of products after on farm production. This volume provides the recent research and development on tropical agriculture production systems for plant, terrestrial animal and aquatic animal to establish sustainable agriculture production in the tropics.
