Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-mar row stem cells or spermatogonia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in the application of radiation to medicine are occurring so rapidly that this is possibly the fastest growing branch of medicine today. In the past decade alone, we have seen enormous progress made in tech niques used both for the diagnosis of disease, such as computerized tomography, digital radiography, ultrasonography, computerized nuclear medicine scanning, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, and for its treatment, such as the radiotherapeutic utilization of high-LET radiations, and the widespread application of computers to perform elegant dosimetry calculations for 3-D treatment planning and imaging. This series will provide in-depth reviews of the many spectacular technical advances and sophisticated concepts, which are developing in medical radiation physics at such an alarming rate that it has become increasingly difficult to keep one's knowledge up-to-date. These comprehen sive review articles will help to bridge the communications gap between the international research community, and the medical physicists and phy sicians whose responsibility it is to put these advances into clinical use. These articles should also be of value to the increasing number of physical scientists and engineers who are interested in the application of their knowledge and talents to the field of medicine.
Book Synopsis High-LET Radiations in Clinical Radiotherapy by : G. W. Barendsen
Download or read book High-LET Radiations in Clinical Radiotherapy written by G. W. Barendsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-LET Radiations in Clinical Radiotherapy covers the proceedings of the 3rd Meeting on Fundamental and Practical Aspects of the Application of Fast Neutrons and other High-LET Particles in Clinical Radiotherapy. The title presents papers that report the experiences in utilizing High-LET radiations in clinical radiotherapy. The coverage of the text includes observations on the reactions of normal and malignant tissues to a standard dose; and clinical observations of early and late normal tissue injury and tumor control in patients receiving fast neutron irradiation. The selection also covers results of fast neutron radiotherapy at Amsterdam; and results of clinical applications with fast neutrons in Edinburgh. The book will be of great use to students and practitioners of medical technology.
