Book Synopsis Researching with Care by : Tula Brannelly
Download or read book Researching with Care written by Tula Brannelly and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the implications of caring about the things we research? How does that affect how we research, who we research with and what we do with our results? Proposing what Joan C. Tronto has called a ‘paradigm shift’ in research thinking, this book invites researchers across disciplines and fields of study to do research that thinks and acts with care. The authors draw on their own and others’ experiences of researching, the troubles they encounter and the opportunities generated when research is approached as a caring practice. Care ethics provides a guide, from starting out, designing and conducting projects to thinking about research legacies. It offers a way in which research can help repair harms and promote justice.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Inheritable Genetic Modification by : John Rasko
Download or read book The Ethics of Inheritable Genetic Modification written by John Rasko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is inheritable genetic modification the new dividing line in gene therapy? The editors of this searching investigation, representing clinical medicine, public health and biomedical ethics, have established a distinguished team of scientists and scholars to address the issues from the perspectives of biological and social science, law and ethics, including an intriguing Foreword from Peter Singer. Their purpose is to consider how society might deal with the ethical concerns raised by inheritable genetic modification, and to re-examine prevailing views about whether these procedures will ever be ethically and socially justifiable. The book also provides background to define the field, and discusses the biological and technological potential for inheritable genetic modification, its limitations, and its connection with gene therapy, cloning, and other reproductive interventions. For scientists, bioethicists, clinicians, counsellors and public commentators, this is an essential contribution to one of the critical debates in current genetics.

Book Synopsis Grace Jantzen by : Professor Elaine L Graham
Download or read book Grace Jantzen written by Professor Elaine L Graham and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace Jantzen was an internationally-renowned feminist philosopher of religion whose work has transformed the way we think about the interactions between religion, culture and gender in Western culture. Jantzen's aim was to 'redeem the present' via a critique and reconstruction of staple concepts of the Western imaginary. This unique book brings together many of Grace Jantzen's colleagues and former students in a wide-ranging exploration of her enduring influence, ranging across philosophy of religion, to literature, psychoanalysis, theology, ethics and politics. Part I assesses the ramifications of Jantzen's affirmation that Western culture must 'choose life' in preference to a prevailing symbolic of violence and death. Part II explores some of the key voices which contributed to Jantzen's understanding of a culture of flourishing and natality: Quaker thought and practice, medieval mysticism and feminist spirituality. Further essays apply elements of Jantzen's work to the politics of disability, development and environmentalism, extending her range of influence into new and innovative areas.
Book Synopsis New Reproductive Technologies and Disembodiment by : Carla Lam
Download or read book New Reproductive Technologies and Disembodiment written by Carla Lam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With attention to the ways in which new reproductive technologies facilitate the gradual disembodiment of reproduction, this book reveals the paradox of women's reproductive experience in patriarchal cultures as being both, and often simultaneously, empowering and disempowering. A rich exploration of birth appropriation in the West, New Reproductive Technologies and Disembodiment investigates the assimilation of women's embodied power into patriarchal systems of symbolism, culture and politics through the inversion of women's and men's reproductive roles. Contending that new reproductive technologies represent another world historical moment, both in their forging of novel social relations and material processes of reproduction, and their manner of disembodying women in unprecedented ways - a disembodiment evident in recent visual and literary, popular and academic texts - this volume locates the roots of this disembodiment in western political discourse. A call to feminist political theory to re-remember the material dimensions of bodies and their philosophical significance, New Reproductive Technologies and Disembodiment will appeal to scholars of sociology, gender studies, political and social theory and the study of science, technology and health.

Book Synopsis Pilgrims in Medicine: Conscience,Legalism and Human Rights by : Thomas Alured Faunce
Download or read book Pilgrims in Medicine: Conscience,Legalism and Human Rights written by Thomas Alured Faunce and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This arrestingly novel work develops a normative synthesis of medical humanities, virtue ethics, medical ethics, health law and human rights. It presents an ambitious, complex and coherent argument for the reconceptualisation of the doctor-patient relationship and its regulation utilising approaches often thought of as being separate, if not opposed (virtue-based ethics and universal human rights). The case is argued gracefully, with moderation, but also with respect for opposing positions. The book's analysis of the foundational professional virtue of therapeutic loyalty is an original departure from the traditional discourse of "patient autonomy," and the ethical and legal "duties" of the medical practitioner. The central argument is not merely presented, as bookends, in the introduction and conclusion. It is cogently represented in each chapter and section and measured against the material considered. A remarkable feature is the use of aptly selected "canonical" literature to inform the argument. These references run from Hesse's "The Glass Bead Game" in the abstract, to Joyce's "Ulysses" in the conclusion. They include excerpts from and discussion about Bergman, Borges, Boswell, Tolstoy, de Beauvoir, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Samuel Johnson, Aristotle, Orwell, Osler, Chaucer, Schweitzer, Shakespeare, Thorwalds, Kafka and William Carlos Williams. Such references are used not merely as an artistic and decorative leitmotif, but become a critical, narrative element and another complex and rich layer to this work. The breadth and quality of the references are testimony to the author's clear understanding of the modern law and literature movement. This work provides the basis of a medicalschool course. As many medical educators as possible should also be encouraged to read this work for the insights it will give them into using their own personal life narratives and those of their patients to inform their decision-making process. This thesis will also be of value to the judiciary, whose members are often called upon to make normatively difficult judgments about medical care and medical rules. The human rights material leads to a hopeful view of an international movement toward a universal synthesis between medical ethics and human rights in all doctor-patient relationships.
Book Synopsis Strategic Management: From Theory to Implementation by : David E. Hussey
Download or read book Strategic Management: From Theory to Implementation written by David E. Hussey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major textbook on strategic management which not only deals fully with the theoretical aspects of corporate planning, but also provides practical guidance on implementation. Now completely revised and updated this book is particularly suitable for the student or manager who needs to relate strategic thinking to current practice. The format has been enlarged and the interior of the book re-designed. The fourth edition treats both analytical and behavioural aspects of planning in depth. Strategic analysis is covered in particular detail, with examples reporting proven - and often original - applications of these theories. Six major case studies have been added to illustrate the application of strategic management theory in practice and a chapter discusses the impact of new approaches to strategy. With comprehensive reference lists, and a guide to research resources, this volume will prove invaluable to researchers and advanced students as well as to the practising manager. A lecturer's resource is available on the BH website which contains a Powerpoint presentation, additional case studies and notes and exercises for seminar use. Details are available by emailing [email protected] 'a highly commendable piece of work, a true compendium for the practitioner and student of planning.' - Journal of Strategic Change (review of the third edition)
