Book Synopsis The Development of a Procedural Manual for Sanitary Landfill Leachate Analysis in a Field Environment by : John Edward Miller
Download or read book The Development of a Procedural Manual for Sanitary Landfill Leachate Analysis in a Field Environment written by John Edward Miller and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedural manual for sampling and analyzing sanitary landfill leachate was designed to guide sanitarians and other public health officials in monitoring mineral and organic material drainage from landfill sources. The manual was constructed to allow flexibility of conducting analytical tests in a field or laboratory environment. Step-by-step procedures for gathering and analyzing water samples were developed to identify the types and amounts of the following chemical leachates: (1) nitrites; (2) chlorides; (3) sulfates; (4) orthophosphates; and (5) nitrates. Other tests included (I) alkalinity; (2) dissolved oxygen; (3) water hardness; and (4) pH value. Public Health Service and Environmental Protection Agency water standards and criteria were included in the manual for analytical result comparison and determination of potential hazards to mankind. A six-month study was conducted to evaluate the sampling and analytical sections of this manual. Control and experimental sampling stations were established along a water source (a creek) tangent to a sanitary landfill. Weekly water sample collections and analyses were conducted. A portable Hach Kit was used to perform all tests. Test results were recorded on data forms for future analysis and evaluation. The leachate analysis manual was found to be adaptable and usable when testing water quality in a field environment. Manual procedures provided step-by-step guidance in sampling and analyzing leachates from sanitary landfills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where waste incinerators are not an option and landfills are at over capacity, cities are hard pressed to find a solution to the problem of what to do with their solid waste. Handbook of Solid Waste Management, 2/e offers a solution. This handbook offers an integrated approach to the planning, design, and management of economical and environmentally responsible solid waste disposal system. Let twenty industry and government experts provide you with the tools to design a solid waste management system capable of disposing of waste in a cost-efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Focusing on the six primary functions of an integrated system--source reduction, toxicity reduction, recycling and reuse, composting, waste- to-energy combustion, and landfilling--they explore each technology and examine its problems, costs, and legal and social ramifications.
