Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and unemployment are the two most formidable problems of the Indian economy. Developing employment opportunities has been an important objective of development planning in India. Though employment has increased over the years, growth in the population and the labor force has aggravated the unemployment problem year after year. The achievement of an employment-for-all objective is nowhere in sight. Due to lack of employment opportunities, millions of people still live below the poverty line. More distressingly, there is no hope of the two formidable problems of poverty and unemployment being solved in the near future. India's tenth Five Year Plan (2002-07) document has recognized that the unemployment problem would be aggravated, much less mitigated, during the Plan period and thereafter. The Indian economy took a new direction when the government announced its new industrial policy in the Parliament in July 1991. Since then, the economic reforms process has encompassed all areas of the economy. The wide-ranging reforms, initiated and implemented since 1991, have induced greater efficiency and competitiveness in all spheres of economic activity. How these reforms have impacted on the growth pattern, in terms of employment generation and reduction in poverty, is a matter of intense debate among economists and social scientists. This book examines these concerns, contributing to the existing and growing body of literature on various aspects of economic reforms in India.

Book excerpt: Social and economic changes around the globe have propelled increasing numbers of people into situations of chronic waiting, where promised access to political freedoms, social goods, or economic resources is delayed, often indefinitely. But there have been few efforts to reflect on the significance of "waiting" in the contemporary world. Timepass fills this gap by offering a captivating ethnography of the student politics and youth activism that lower middle class young men in India have undertaken in response to pervasive underemployment. It highlights the importance of waiting as a social experience and basis for political mobilization, the micro-politics of class power in north India, and the socio-economic strategies of lower middle classes. The book also explores how this north Indian story relates to practices of waiting occurring in multiple other contexts, making the book of interest to scholars and students of globalization, youth studies, and class across the social sciences.

This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India the caste system has been a large part of society. In addition to secondary evidence based on recent literature analyzing the relevance and impact of the caste system on poverty, the problem of unemployment means the problem of providing work to those who are willing to work. There are a large number of people who are either partly employed or wholly unemployed. It is a well-known fact that India is a thickly populated country. In the mainstream of economic theory, unemployment and under-employment on a vast scale are regarded as a primary cause of poverty. In economic terminology, waste of labor is commonly discussed as 'unemployment' and 'underemployment'. Together the unemployed and under-employed are assumed to constitute a reservoir of untapped productive potential. This potential can be used to eliminate poverty. The supreme taste of planning is this to channelize the unemployed and under-employed into productive work, which in turn, helps to reduce poverty. The social system in India used to be a cause for increasing unemployment. The joint family system made it impossible for a large number of semi-educated young men to live on the common family income. Finally, the cast system, based on profession, created artificial barriers that prevented the easy transfer of the unemployed in one caste to seek opportunities in another. The caste system seems to have played a large part in creating poverty in India.

Book excerpt: The subject of India's rapid growth in the past two decades has become a prominent focus in the public eye. A book that documents this unique and unprecedented surge, and addresses the issues raised by it, is sorely needed. Arvind Panagariya fills that gap with this sweeping, ambitious survey. India: The Emerging Giant comprehensively describes and analyzes India's economic development since its independence, as well as its prospects for the future. The author argues that India's growth experience since its independence is unique among developing countries and can be divided into four periods, each of which is marked by distinctive characteristics: the post-independence period, marked by liberal policies with regard to foreign trade and investment, the socialist period during which Indira Ghandi and her son blocked liberalization and industrial development, a period of stealthy liberalization, and the most recent, openly liberal period. Against this historical background, Panagariya addresses today's poverty and inequality, macroeconomic policies, microeconomic policies, and issues that bear upon India's previous growth experience and future growth prospects. These provide important insights and suggestions for reform that should change much of the current thinking on the current state of the Indian economy. India: The Emerging Giant will attract a wide variety of readers, including academic economists, policy makers, and research staff in national governments and international institutions. It should also serve as a core text in undergraduate and graduate courses that deal with Indias economic development and policies.
