Book excerpt: Why is split second decision-making superior to deliberation? Gut Feelings delivers the science behind Malcolm Gladwell's Blink. Reflection and reason are overrated, according to renowned psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer. Much better qualified to help us make decisions is the cognitive, emotional, and social repertoire we call intuition, a suite of gut feelings that have evolved over the millennia specifically for making decisions. Gladwell drew heavily on Gigerenzer's research. But Gigerenzer goes a step further by explaining just why our gut instincts are so often right. Intuition, it seems, is not some sort of mystical chemical reaction but a neurologically based behavior that evolved to ensure that we humans respond quickly when faced with a dilemma (BusinessWeek).

This book was released on 1967 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, S. A. Barnett, one of the world's foremost authorities on animal behavior, describes the roles of instinct and intelligence in the animal kingdom. It discusses the senses of animals, their rites and realms, ways of communication, social communities, responses to tension and stress, migratory habits, mating, reproduction, and the sources of human behavior. The text examines man's behavior regarding property and that of animals in the areas in which they live. Can the two be compared? The author demonstrates a keen understanding of the subtle interplay of "instinct" and "intelligence" while offering a comprehensive treatment of how and to what ends the variety of life on this planet acts and reacts. From this exploration, the startlingly significant role of "intelligence" in the whole of the animal kingdom emerges. The text presents an all-encompassing and up-to-the-minute survey of what we know about the behavior of our fellow creatures and its importance for humankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The father of cognitive neuroscience” illuminates the past, present, and future of the mind-brain problem How do neurons turn into minds? How does physical “stuff”—atoms, molecules, chemicals, and cells—create the vivid and various worlds inside our heads? The problem of consciousness has gnawed at us for millennia. In the last century there have been massive breakthroughs that have rewritten the science of the brain, and yet the puzzles faced by the ancient Greeks are still present. In The Consciousness Instinct, the neuroscience pioneer Michael S. Gazzaniga puts the latest research in conversation with the history of human thinking about the mind, giving a big-picture view of what science has revealed about consciousness. The idea of the brain as a machine, first proposed centuries ago, has led to assumptions about the relationship between mind and brain that dog scientists and philosophers to this day. Gazzaniga asserts that this model has it backward—brains make machines, but they cannot be reduced to one. New research suggests the brain is actually a confederation of independent modules working together. Understanding how consciousness could emanate from such an organization will help define the future of brain science and artificial intelligence, and close the gap between brain and mind. Captivating and accessible, with insights drawn from a lifetime at the forefront of the field, The Consciousness Instinct sets the course for the neuroscience of tomorrow.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct and Intelligence in the Animal Kingdom: A Critical Contribution to Modern Animal Psychology The following essay is offered as a contribution to comparative psychology. Its special purpose is to submit the manner in which modern animal psychology applies the notions of instinct and intelligence to a careful examination. In a former publication we endeavored to elucidate the doctrine of animal intelligence according to St. Thomas Aquinas. For this purpose we selected an example from insect life. Besides numerous smaller essays on the life of ants and their guests, which appeared mostly in German scientific periodicals, we have published a biologic-psychological work on Mixed Ant-Societies. It was principally in discussing the latter publication that representatives of modern animal psychology raised sundry objections to our distinction between instinct and intelligence. As, however, the exact meaning and use of these terms is the essential point of difference between the old and recent animal psychology, we deemed it appropriate to treat this question in a special paper in which the difficulties of our critics could be more closely investigated. We shall try, as far as possible, to avoid all abstract philosophical discussions; the more so, as the present essay must be adapted to the views of modem naturalists.
