Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Physics for Technical Schools, Colleges, and Universities This text has grown out of some seven years' experience in the teaching of large classes of engineering students in general physics in the University of Michigan. Throughout the course of this work one hour a week was devoted wholly to the solution of practical problems bearing upon the fundamental principles treated in the lecture room and laboratory. This phase of the work proved so satisfactory that it was deemed desirable to incorporate the typewritten exercises into the form of the present volume. This was done both for the convenience of our own students and instructors, and also with the hope that the exercises may be of service to other teachers of physics. These exercises are intended to supplement the usual one year's course in general physics, with a supply of material of such range and variety as will be likely to stimulate the student's interest and clarify his understanding. The chief characteristics of this text may be summarized briefly as follows: 1. Statement of Fundamental Principles. - Accompanying each set of problems there is a brief statement of the fundamental principles involved, and also a large number of illustrative examples which enable the student to proceed with his work with a minimum of time and attention on the part of the instructor. 2. Character of the Problems. - The problems are practical, carefully graded, and are thoroughly workable. 3. Range of Problems. - The one thousand and twenty-five problems herein contained offer a range and variety which will enable the instructor not only to select examples suitable for special groups of students, but also to vary the assignments from year to year. 4. Data Modern. - The data presented in connection with these exercises are thoroughly modern and in accordance with the recommendations and practice of the United States Bureau of Standards, and of our Scientific Societies and Engineering Associations. As it is intended as a text-book, the general cases are discussed fully, leaving the student to derive the formulas for special cases as part of the regular problem work. At the end of each chapter there are review questions covering the more important parts of the subjects dis cussed and problems illustrating the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Alternating Currents N 0 one will dispute the use of a treatise on the subject in which the chief aim of the writer is to eliminate mathematical difficulties and give prominence to the physics of the subject. Since the author has engaged in practice as a consulting engineer he has found that the want of a simple though com prehensive treatise is often a deterrent to practical engineers acquiring a requisite knowledge of the subject. Since the principles of continuous currents became intelligible to practical engineers, their commercial application has gone rapidly forward; it only requires the principles of alternating currents to be similarly placed before them for a like increase in their application to practice to result. In the body of the book every effort has been made to eliminate mathematical difficulties, only a simple differentiation or integration being occasionally used. Those readers who are conversant with higher mathematics will find in the Appendix proofs of results which are assumed in the text, and also a few more difficult problems, some of which are of greater theoretical than practical interest. The author hopes that his efforts will be appreciated by practical engineers, University honours students, and the more advanced students in Technical Schools studying for the Honours Grade in Electric Lighting for examinations of the City and Guilds of London Institute. It is to be emphasized that a short course of Vector Algebra should form a portion of the curriculum of every University College and Technical Institute. As the book has been written in spare moments since leaving the teaching profession, the author has not been able to acknow ledge all the various sources from which information has been obtained. The work is really a systematic arrangement of lecture notes compiled during the last ten years, and which contain information gathered from text-books, periodicals, and the journals of various learned societies, as well as from the writings of the author himself. It is, however, impossible to over-estimate the indebtedness to the writings of Professor S. P. Thompson and Mr. C. P. Steinmetz. It would, in fact, be impossible to write a treatise on alternating currents without drawing much from their valuable contributions to the subject. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
