Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Astrophysics They do not, however, cover the whole field of astrophysics. Planetary and cometary astronomy are deliberately, although for different reasons, excluded from treatment in them. The moon and planets still belong to the theoretical and descriptive departments of the elder celestial science. Nearly all that is known about their condition has been learned by direct telescopic observation. The items of information added through the aid of the camera and the spectroscope, though valuable, are very few. The orbital characteristics, on the other hand, of comets and meteors are too prominent to be set aside in any profitable discussion of their nature. They are of the very essence of the phenomena yet they would be out of place in a book strictly limited to the consideration of the heavenly bodies under their physical aspect. Download or read book Problems in Astrophysics written by Agnes M. Clerke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Astrophysics The object of the present work is not so much to instruct as to suggest. It represents a sort of reconnaissance, and embodies the information collected by scouts and skirmishers regarding practicable lines of advance and accessible points of attack, with a view to annexing for the realm of knowledge some further strips and corners from the territory of ignorance. Its inspiring motive, in short, is the desire for a rectification of the frontier in the interests of science. Material resources for the furtherance of such encroachments are not lacking. The globe is studded with observatories, variously and admirably equipped. Yet innumerable objects in the sidereal heavens remain neglected, mainly through inadvertence to the extraordinary interest of the questions pending with respect to them. In the following pages it has been sought to indicate some of these individually, and in their relations to the larger meanings of cosmical research. But this could be done effectually only from the vantage-ground of our actual acquirements; hence the book, although primarily designed to stimulate the progress of astrophysics, necessarily includes an account of its present state. Before attempting to add to our store of learning, we must realise what is already possessed. The unknown, it is true, is indefinitely vast, and the rays of light which we can project into its darkness penetrate but a short way. Book Synopsis Radiative Processes in Astrophysics by : George B. Rybicki
Download or read book Radiative Processes in Astrophysics written by George B. Rybicki and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.
Book Synopsis Astrophysical Concepts by : Martin Harwit
Download or read book Astrophysical Concepts written by Martin Harwit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My principal aim in writing this book was to present a wide range of astrophysical topics in sufficient depth to give the reader a general quantitative understanding of the subject. The book outlines cosmic events but does not portray them in detail-it provides aseries of astrophysical sketches. I think this approach befits the present uncertainties and changing views in astrophysics. The material is based on notes I prepared for a course aimed at seniors and beginning graduate students in physics and astronomy at Cornell. This course defined the level at which the book is written. For readers who are versed in physics but are unfamiliar with astronomical terminology, Appendix A is included. It gives a brief background of astronomical concepts and should be read before starting the main text. The first few chapters outline the scope of modern astrophysics and deal with elementary problems concerning the size and mass of cosmic objects. However, it soon becomes apparent that a broad foundation in physics is needed to proceed. This base is developed in Chapters 4 to 7 by using, as ex am pIes, specific astronomi cal situations. Chapters 8 to 10 enlarge on the topics first outlined in Chapter I and show how we can obtain quantitative insights into the structure and evolution of stars, the dynamics of co~mic gases, and the large-scale behavior of the universe.
Book Synopsis The Early Universe by : Gerhard Börner
Download or read book The Early Universe written by Gerhard Börner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth edition of Börner's "The Early Universe" is practically a new book, not just updated version. In particular, it is now organized so as to make it more useful as a textbook. And problem sections are also added. In the centre are the connections between particle physics and cosmology: The standard model, some basic implications of quantum field theory and the questions of structure formation. Special emphasis is given to the observed anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background and the consequences drawn for cosmology and for the structure formation models. Nuclear and particle physicists and astrophysicists, researchers and teachers as well as graduate students will welcome this new edition of a classic text and reference.

Book Synopsis The Expanding Universe by : Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington
Download or read book The Expanding Universe written by Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book, long out of print, investigates the experimental determination of one of the fundamental constants of astrophysics and its significance for astronomy. The equations of general relativity include a constant lambda in their solution. If lambda is non-zero and positive, this represents the existence of a phenomenon of cosmical repulsion. In this book Eddington discussed the implications of this for models of the universe. The book offers a unique sidelight upon the history of ideas and Eddington's artistry. His evident enjoyment of writing and exposition shine through, and astrophysicists and historians of science will find that this reissue throws fascinating light on one of Britain's greatest scientists.
Book Synopsis Measurements and Standards in Plasma-Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards (Classic Reprint) by : Lewis M. Branscomb

Branscomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measurements and Standards in Plasma-Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards To relate the many fields of specialization, a more basic approach is needed, which in essence creates a single broad problem and treats this problem from a systematic and quantitative point of view. The long-range objective is therefore the solution of the many-body problem of modern atomic physics in its full generality. Required to accomplish this goal are precision measurements and calculations of the many atomic and collective parameters which govern the behavior of the hot plasma or gas and which provide the diagnostic tools for a description of the state of the gas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in Time and Space: A Collection of Essays Relating to the Earth, Physically and Astronomically and Cognate Matters The following Essays form a collection rather than a series that is to say they are mutually independent of each other and may be read in any order. This necessarily results in some repetition when the subject-matter of one Essay trenches upon that of another. I have thought it preferable, however, that such repetition should occur, to such an extent as is requisite to avoid obscurity in relation to the subject specially dealt with, rather than that certain Essays should be mutually dependent. Download or read book Problem Book in Relativity and Gravitation written by Alan P. Lightman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential resource for learning about general relativity and much more, from four leading experts Important and useful to every student of relativity, this book is a unique collection of some 475 problems--with solutions--in the fields of special and general relativity, gravitation, relativistic astrophysics, and cosmology. The problems are expressed in broad physical terms to enhance their pertinence to readers with diverse backgrounds. In their solutions, the authors have attempted to convey a mode of approach to these kinds of problems, revealing procedures that can reduce the labor of calculations while avoiding the pitfall of too much or too powerful formalism. Although well suited for individual use, the volume may also be used with one of the modem textbooks in general relativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Astronomy of the Bible The volume here offered to the public contains the last finished astronomical work of Professor Mitchel; and, with those that he published before his death, constitutes a series which, if not exhaustive of the accepted divisions of the science, presents, in outline, its great physical features and its ethical relations. The Planetary and Stellar Worlds, published in 1848, contained a popular exposition of the important discoveries and splendid theories of modern astronomy. It traced the progress of the great science from the primitive ages, showing how, little by little, the true theory dawned upon the feeble mind of man, fearful and long unwilling to receive it; it presented the great laws, with copious and eloquent illustration; it ofi'ered clear solu tions of the wondrous problems; discussed the discovery of new planets and the characteristics of the cometary world; displayed the grandeur of the scale upon which the universe is built, and showed the benevolent provisions for its perma nent stability. Book Synopsis An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics (Classic Reprint) by : Forest Ray Moulton
Download or read book An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics (Classic Reprint) written by Forest Ray Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics This volume is the outgrowth of a course of lectures given annually by the author at the University of Chicago during the last six years. These lectures have been open to senior college students and to graduate students who have not had the equivalent of this work. They have been taken by students of Astronomy, by many making Mathematics their major work, and by some who, though specializing in quite distinct lines, have desired to get an idea of the processes by means of which astronomers interpret and predict celestial phenomena. Thus they have served to give many an idea of the methods of investigation and the results attained in Celestial Mechanics, and have prepared some for a detailed study extending into the various branches of modern investigations. The object of the work, the subjects covered, and the methods of treatment seem to have been amply justified by this experience.
