Book Synopsis Stochastic Ordering and Dependence in Applied Probability by : R. Szekli
Download or read book Stochastic Ordering and Dependence in Applied Probability written by R. Szekli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introductionary course in stochastic ordering and dependence in the field of applied probability for readers with some background in mathematics. It is based on lectures and senlinars I have been giving for students at Mathematical Institute of Wroclaw University, and on a graduate course a.t Industrial Engineering Department of Texas A&M University, College Station, and addressed to a reader willing to use for example Lebesgue measure, conditional expectations with respect to sigma fields, martingales, or compensators as a common language in this field. In Chapter 1 a selection of one dimensional orderings is presented together with applications in the theory of queues, some parts of this selection are based on the recent literature (not older than five years). In Chapter 2 the material is centered around the strong stochastic ordering in many dimen sional spaces and functional spaces. Necessary facts about conditioning, Markov processes an"d point processes are introduced together with some classical results such as the product formula and Poissonian departure theorem for Jackson networks, or monotonicity results for some re newal processes, then results on stochastic ordering of networks, re~~ment policies and single server queues connected with Markov renewal processes are given. Chapter 3 is devoted to dependence and relations between dependence and ordering, exem plified by results on queueing networks and point processes among others.
Book Synopsis Analysis, Geometry and Probability by : Rajendra Bhatia
Download or read book Analysis, Geometry and Probability written by Rajendra Bhatia and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-04-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of expository articles by well-known mathematicians. Some of them introduce the reader to a major topic, while others provide a glimpse into an active field of research. All articles are accessible to graduate students. The articles were invited in honour of K. R. Parthasarathy, a mathematican, teacher and expositor of renown. Some of the articles, by his coworkers, are related to his work on probability, quantum probability and group representations. Others are on diverse topics in analysis, geometry and number theory.

Book Synopsis Probability Approximations via the Poisson Clumping Heuristic by : David Aldous
Download or read book Probability Approximations via the Poisson Clumping Heuristic written by David Aldous and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you place a large number of points randomly in the unit square, what is the distribution of the radius of the largest circle containing no points? Of the smallest circle containing 4 points? Why do Brownian sample paths have local maxima but not points of increase, and how nearly do they have points of increase? Given two long strings of letters drawn i. i. d. from a finite alphabet, how long is the longest consecutive (resp. non-consecutive) substring appearing in both strings? If an imaginary particle performs a simple random walk on the vertices of a high-dimensional cube, how long does it take to visit every vertex? If a particle moves under the influence of a potential field and random perturbations of velocity, how long does it take to escape from a deep potential well? If cars on a freeway move with constant speed (random from car to car), what is the longest stretch of empty road you will see during a long journey? If you take a large i. i. d. sample from a 2-dimensional rotationally-invariant distribution, what is the maximum over all half-spaces of the deviation between the empirical and true distributions? These questions cover a wide cross-section of theoretical and applied probability. The common theme is that they all deal with maxima or min ima, in some sense.
Book Synopsis Probability Measures on Groups IX by : Herbert Heyer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest in this series of Oberwolfach conferences focussed on the interplay between structural probability theory and various other areas of pure and applied mathematics such as Tauberian theory, infinite-dimensional rotation groups, central limit theorems, harmonizable processes, and spherical data. Thus it was attended by mathematicians whose research interests range from number theory to quantum physics in conjunction with structural properties of probabilistic phenomena. This volume contains 5 survey articles submitted on special invitation and 25 original research papers.
