Book Synopsis The Development of Latin Clause Structure by : Lieven Jozef Maria Danckaert
Download or read book The Development of Latin Clause Structure written by Lieven Jozef Maria Danckaert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Latin word order, and in particular the relative ordering of i) lexical verbs and direct objects (OV vs VO) and ii) auxiliaries and non-finite verbs (VAux vs AuxV). In Latin these elements can freely be ordered with respect to each other, whereas the present-day Romance languages only allow for the head-initial orders VO and AuxV. Lieven Danckaert offers a detailed, corpus-based description of these two word order alternations, focusing on their diachronic development in the period from c. 200 BC until 600 AD. The corpus data reveal that some received wisdom needs to be reconsidered: there is in fact no evidence for any major increase in productivity of the order VO during the eight centuries under investigation, and the order AuxV only becomes more frequent in clauses with a modal verb and an infinitive, not in clauses with a BE-auxiliary and a past participle. The book also explores a more fundamental question about Latin syntax, namely whether or not the language is configurational, in the sense that a phrase structure grammar (with 'higher-order constituents' such as verb phrases) is needed to describe and analyse Latin word order patterns. Four pieces of evidence are presented that suggest that Latin is indeed a fully configurational language, despite its high degree of word order flexibility. Specifically, it is shown that there is ample evidence for the existence of a verb phrase constituent. The book thus contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the status of configurationality as a language universal.

Book Synopsis Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance by : Brian A. Krostenko
Download or read book Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance written by Brian A. Krostenko and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krostenko (classics, U. of Chicago) explores charm, wit, elegance, and style in Roman literature of the late Republic by tracking the origins, development, and use of the terms that described them, which he calls "the language of social performance." His sociolinguistic approach is to describe the relationship between the words themselves and the ideological categories they expressed. Included in his analysis are the growth of elite aestheticism, the Latin rhetorical tradition, performance in Cicero and Catullus, and the rise of Octavian and the death of the language of social performance. Book Synopsis Jerome and the Monastic Clergy by : Andrew Cain
Download or read book Jerome and the Monastic Clergy written by Andrew Cain and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jerome and the Monastic Clergy, Andrew Cain provides the first full-scale commentary on the famous Letter to Nepotian, in which Jerome articulates his radical plan for imposing a strict ascetic code of conduct on the contemporary clergy. Cain comprehensively addresses stylistic, literary, historical, text-critical and other issues of interpretive interest. Accompanying the commentary is an introduction which situates the Letter in the broader context of its author’s life and work and exposes its fundamental propagandistic dimensions. The revised critical Latin text and the new facing-page translation will make the Letter more accessible than ever before and will provide a reliable textual apparatus for future scholarship on this key writing by one of the most prolific authors in Latin antiquity.
