Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mormonism and Its Author: Or a Statement of the Doctrines of the "Latter-Day Saints" The latter-day Saints are the same with the Mormonites or Mormons. The Mormons take their name from the Book of Mormon, a foolish and absurd book, published originally at a place called Palmyra, in America, by an American, named Joseph Smith, who described himself in the title-page as its Author and Proprietor. This person gave out, that he was a prophet of God, like Isaiah or Jeremiah, Ezekiel or Daniel. He told a wild story about an angel appearing to him, who directed him to dig a hole in a certain hill. He said, that he dug in the ground accordingly, and found a book, the leaves of which were thin plates of gold covered with letters belonging to an unknown language. He further said, that God enabled him to turn these letters into English, and that he thus 'pro duced the book which is called the Book of Mor mon. But when he was asked to show the Golden Book itself, be said that God would not allow it to be seen. He was, however, very glad to sell copies of. His Book of Mormon at a dollar a piece, or four and-sixpence of our English money. I have in my possession a copy of the first edition of this book, with all its original errors 1. Most persons agreed in thinking the story about the Angel and the Golden Book, a mere trick to persuade people to buy the Book of Mormon. But some were also found who believed the story, and were glad tio pay their money for a book which, in their simplicity, For an account of the supposed origin hf the Book of Mormon, as well as a. Book excerpt: The author demonstrates that the Book of Mormon is a native Mesoamerican book (or codex) that exhibits what one would expect of a historical document produced in the context of ancient Mesoamerican civilization. He also shows that scholars' discoveries about Mesoamerica and the contents of the Nephite record are clearly related, listing more than 400 points where the Book of Mormon text corresponds to characteristic Mesoamerican situations, statements, allusions, and history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mormon Prophet IN studying the rise of this curious sect I have discovered that certain misconceptions concerning it are deeply rooted in the minds of many of the more earnest of the well-wish ers to society. Some otherwise well-informed pe0p1e hold Mormonism to be synonymous with polygamy, believe that Brigham Young was its chief prophet, and are convinced that the miseries of oppressed women and tyran nies exercised over helpless subjects of both sexes are the only themes that the religion of more than two hundred thousand people can afford. When I have ventured in con versation to deny these somewhat fabulous notions, it has been earnestly suggested to me that to write on so false a religion in other than a polemic spirit would tend 'to the um dermining of civilised life. Excerpt: ... righteousness was such that "The Lord came and dwelt with His people. . . . And the Lord called His people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them." (Pearl of Great Price, p. 88.) The people of whom the Book of Mormon bears record also attained a blessed state of equality and with corresponding results. The Twelve Disciples, whom Christ had specially commissioned, ministered with such effectiveness that the people "had all things common among them, every man dealing justly one with another." (3 Nephi 26:19.) Further, "Therefore they were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift." (4 Nephi 1:3.) Of them the prophet wrote: "Surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God." (Verse 16.) The United Order will be a success when it is established by Divine direction. The tithing system has failed whenever meddled with by the secular power. Common ownership can never be enforced by the law of the land. It must be a religious observance, of voluntary acceptance devoid of compulsion or restraint; and as such, the world shall yet see this, the Lord's plan, in successful operation. -- 58 -- THE WORD OF WISDOM Sanctity of the Body "T DEGREESNOW ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that J.Vthe Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." (1 Cor. 3:16; see also 6:19; and Doctrine & Covenants 93:35.) In these and kindred Scriptures the sanctity of the human body is affirmed with impressive simplicity. The word of God stands in strong contrast with the erroneous assumption that...

Book excerpt: Utah and the Mormons combines the holdings of several major libraries to bring together a significant collection that includes periodicals, doctrinal and controversial works both pro- and anti-Mormon, contemporary works relating to the Latter-Day Saints at various times and in different places. There are also materials for the history of the more important branches of the church, as well as sources of Utah history during its territorial period. While the collection does not pretend to be complete in its record of this particular religious tradition and the lives of its followers in the territories that they settled, it does include core contemporary materials during a critical period in Mormonism's establishment as an American-born religion. The Mormons' vigorous missionary activity brought opposition nearly everywhere they gathered, rendering the history of the Mormon Church is an essential element in the history of the United States and in particular states such as Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. The history of Utah is, of course, inseparable from that of the Mormons, and this collection is rich in information with rare documents exhibiting the early history of the Mormons and their influences on the histories of these states. Scholars in the fields of American studies, religious history, and the history of the west will find key nineteenth-century and early twenty century periodical publications generated by Mormon communities in different parts of the United States (and even the world, with some publications included that appeared in Liverpool and Lausanne). Ohio papers include Elder's Journal of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Evening and Morning Star, and Latter Day Saints Messenger and Advocate (all published out of Kirtland, OH), as well as The Evangelical Inquirer (Dayton). The Illinois city of Nauvoo published the Nauvoo Neighbor, Kingdom of God, and The Wasp. Iowa is represented by the Frontier Guardian (Kanesville); Tennessee by the Latter Day Saints Southern Star (Chattanooga); Missouri by The Times and Seasons (Independence), California by The Western Standard (San Francisco), and Pennsylvania by The Gospel Reflector (Philadelphia) and the Messenger and Advocate of the Church of Christ (Pittsburgh). Among the monographs reproduced in this collection, scholars will find writings from Mormonism's original founders, such as A Collection of Facts, Relative to the Course Taken by Elder Sidney Rigdon; Discourses Delivered by Presidents Joseph Smith and Brigham Young on the Relation of the "Mormons" to the Government; A Series of Instructions and Remarks by President Brigham Young at a Special Council; and James Jesse Strang's The Prophetic Controversy and The Book of the Law of the Lord. Also present are such pro-Mormon testaments as Charles Thompson's Evidences in Proof of the Book of Mormon, Alfred Giles' Marriage, Monogamy and Polygamy on the Basis of Divine Law; Rudolph Etzenhouser's The Book Unsealed ... the Claims of the Book of Mormon Examined and Sustained; and Helen Mar Whitney's Why We Practice Plural Marriage. Anti-Mormon tracts appear as well, including George J. Adams' A Few Plain Facts Showing the Folly ... of the Rev. Timothy R. Matthews; Alexander Campbell's Delusions. An Analysis of the Book of Mormon; Joshua Vaughan Himes' Mormon Delusions and Monstrosities. A Review of the Book of Mormon; and Tyler Parsons' Mormon Fanaticism Exposed. A Compendium of the Book of Mormon. Works on specific historical events also abound, including The Lee Trial! An Expose of the Mountain Meadows Massacre; The Thatcher Episode: A Concise Statement of the Facts in the Case, George Turnbull Moore Davis' An Authentic Account of the Massacre of Joseph Smith; Albert M. Gibson's Have Mormons Any Rights? The New Edmunds Bill. Brief in Re Senate Bill No. 10; and William Hooper's The Utah Bill. A Plea for Religious Liberty.

Book excerpt: Mormonism arose in early 19th century New York and has fired the imaginations of its devotees, critics, and students ever since. Some intellectuals and academics read Mormonism as the product of economic change wrought by the Erie Canal in the Burned-over District of western New York State and upper north-eastern Ohio. Others read Mormonism as an authoritarian reaction to Jacksonian democracy. Finally, some, including most of those who became Mormons in the early 19th century and most of those who are believing Mormons today, read Mormonism as the intervention of God in human history. This book engages with Mormon Studies from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century to the end of the 20th century. It covers those who fought over Mormonism's truth or falsity, on those who tried to understand Mormonism as a religious and sociological phenomenon, and on those who explored the history of Mormonism from a more dispassionate perspective. It concludes with an exploration of the culture war that erupted as Mormon Studies professionalized particularly after the 1960s.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Husband in Utah, or Sights and Scenes Among the Mormons: With Remarks on Their Moral and Social Economy One year since, with fear and trembling, I gave to the world my testimony against the Mormon delu sion.* It was not a history of that people, or the rise and progress of their singular creed. It made no pretensions even to trace them as'a body through their various settlements in the Western country pre vious to their emigration to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. It was designe'd simply as a record of personal experience - a transcript of events written from memory a faithful narrative of such hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, as any woman placed in such circumstances must necessarily feel. The success of that venture emboldens me to send another barque in the same track, though this time it is the experience and adventures of another - of a man. Of course he takes a somewhat different view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
