Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Episcopal Church has long been regarded as the religion of choice among America's ruling elite, helping to set the tone for the moral and social life of the nation during the twentieth century. Shaped by their experiences of the Great Depression and World War II, a new generation of Episcopal leaders emerged after 1945, eager to place their church in the vanguard of social reform and reconciliation. These liberal activists came to dominate the church's national structures during the 1960s and shaped its response to the civil rights and anti-war movements. They sought to reposition the Episcopal Church as a catalyst for progressive change. Even so, these leaders routinely neglected black, female, and working-class Episcopalians, even as they espoused the causes of equality and liberation in the wider society. This study focuses on forms of social activism and theological innovation pursued by members of the war generation. Attending to the development of such activities among the WASP elite provides crucial insight into their underlying assumptions about social and theological authority and helps explain their ambivalent response to the challenges faced in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing upon extensive archival research, this book not only offers a group portrait of Episcopalianism's leading post-war figures but documents the ways in which their individual pursuits influenced the direction of the church as a whole.

Book excerpt: "Why is Understanding Bible Prophecy So Important" attempts to look at the modern world and see the prophetic workings that surround events that are shaping mankind. We are in the most climactic time in human history and we are privileged to witness God's Prophetic Word in real time. We are the chosen generation that can watch God's mystery unfold, and by understanding the end from the beginning, we may even be able to predict the outcome of certain events. As the hourglass drops its last grain of sand, prophetic events will become clearer and we will understand God and His ways. Many have wished for this opportunity and we are the ones who have been given this privilege. Why would anyone say no to watching God work within the world around them?"Why is Understanding Bible Prophecy So Important" was written in a very unique way as the chapters were not written at the same time or even originally designed to flow together. Many were written years apart, but as the world evolves, the story starts to come together. By watching the dates when the chapters were written, it will provide context into the meaning of the chapters and the prophetic undertow present within. Some were written prior to events unfolding while others talk about future events that have yet to transpire. All together they illustrate the unveiling of the Prophetic Word within our Modern World.

Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and condensed from David Norton's acclaimed A History of the Bible as Literature, this book, first published in 2000, tells the story of English literary attitudes to the Bible. At first jeered at and mocked as English writing, then denigrated as having 'all the disadvantages of an old prose translation', the King James Bible somehow became 'unsurpassed in the entire range of literature'. How so startling a change happened and how it affected the making of modern translations such as the Revised Version and the New English Bible is at the heart of this exploration of a vast range of religious, literary and cultural ideas. Translators, writers such as Donne, Milton, Bunyan and the Romantics, reactionary Bishops and radical students all help to show the changes in religious ideas and in standards of language and literature that created our sense of the most important book in English.

General editors and experienced bible scholars John MacArthur and Richard Mayhue help to provide a clear and convincing Biblical explanation for the interpretive approach to Scripture that results in a knowable futuristic view of Christ's millennial reign on earth. Christ's Prophetic Plans also helps provide the certain validity of God's promises to future Israel, and the crucial differences between Israel (as a people and a nation) and the New Testament church. Christ's Prophetic Plans offers the reader John MacArthur's most explicit writing on eschatology and is perfect for pastors, bible professors, teachers, and students with a heart and mind for discovering Biblical truth. This primer takes you on a Biblical study of questions surrounding prophecy, Israel, the rapture, and the different millennial views. The fruit of such study is great as God specifically promises His blessing on those who know and obey the things of biblical prophecy (Revelation 1:3; 22:7).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian eschatology and prophecy are interwoven in the teachings of the Bible to such an extent that the knowledge of the first is limited to the extent that we comprehend the second. Every doctrine of the Christian faith has its conclusion or culmination in that future which is the burden of Biblical prophecy. An ignorance of this prophecy, or any perversion of it, seriously affects one’s concept of the pure faith. It is for this reason, therefore, that a clear Biblical expression concerning prophecy is necessary. Especially is it needed because confusion is increasing among Christians with regard to trustworthy teaching of prophecy, leading, as is usual in such cases, to lessened certainty in testimony and to decreased evangelistic zeal in winning the lost to Christ. With a view to rendering service to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church, a group of believers, assisted or counselled by many well-known and trusted Bible teachers, decided to call a conference on the Christian faith in its relation to prophecy. Because of its wide capacity organizationally, its peculiar fitness to promote such a conference, and its ability to distribute benefits derived therefrom, the sponsorship rested with the American Board of Missions to the Jews. Under the direction of its energetic and capable secretary, Dr. Joseph Hoffman Cohn, the program for a Congress on Prophecy was carefully arranged and it was carried out in the Calvary Baptist Church, New York City, November 1-8, 1942.

Book excerpt: Though it is God who prepares each of us for our entrance into eternity, Kenneth Davis, the author of The Offer of Paradise in Our Lifetime, is convicted that this is not a spectator sport, especially in these moments of history. This volume is a Bible and Spirit of Prophecy-based discourse on the role we have in hastening Christ's return and the end of this sin-tarnished planet. Found within these pages is a prayerful and systematic search into the question of what is keeping the Lord's finishing touches of salvation on hold. Many, even within the household of faith, find themselves troubled over the thought of hearing reports indicating that the end has come. While believing in the second coming, the sense of its imminence is frequently a source of hesitation. Could this have something to do with our uncertainty over whether we are ready or not? With that said, good news is coming. Readers will examine how the power of endurance and readiness, available to young and old, is enlarged by an understanding of God's plan of granting His saints today an indispensable role in the timing of the end. This role encompasses unity on simple but specific commitments of faith. Our reward will be the privilege of claiming the promise of His return within our lifetime as a reality, not speculative sensationalism. This privilege includes a precursor—cooperating with and being filled by the Holy Spirit to an unprecedented measure—that we may ultimately reflect the image of God and more effectively draw a countless multitude from every nation, kindred, and tribe into His fold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The place of religion within a secular society has been much discussed in recent years, fueled in part by Charles Taylor’s Secular Age (2007). The conversation surrounding Taylor’s work suggests a widespread interest in religion in secular or post-secular contexts. Even as scholars have become increasingly interested in emerging and novel forms of religion, prophecy has continued to be depicted in traditional forms employed to further partisan agendas. In place of secularity as religious declension and culture clash, this volume explores prophetic works in a variety of forms, including satire, tragedy, the novel, Native American tradition, science fiction, the Bible, and higher education itself. Together the contributors demonstrate that there is much to learn from both religious and secular prophecy. The book is inspired by the idea that prophetic works are a promising subject area for a diverse audience in both higher education and the church. The volume’s contributors demonstrate as much in that they work in a wide range of disciplines, including religious studies, biblical studies, theology, American studies, literature, philosophy, and political theory.

Collins's Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is one of the most popular introductory textbooks in colleges and seminary classrooms. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time. In order to enhance classroom use, Collins's major text has now been divided into four volumes, one for each major part of the Hebrew Bible. This volume, based on the new third edition, focuses on prophecy in the Hebrew Bible. Here, Collins explores the major and minor prophets and the messages they delivered within each of their historical contexts. The volume also contains the introduction to Collins's major text and is now available with even more student-friendly features, including charts, maps, photographs, chapter summaries, and bibliographies for further reading. Collins presents the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understandings of the biblical text and engages the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world.

Book excerpt: Change the World around You through a Lifestyle of Encouragement From the beginning God has been communicating with mankind, just as he did when he talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden. Yet far too many people believe that talking with God is extraordinary when, in fact, it should be an ordinary part of our Christian life. Jesus modeled this two-way conversation. He also embraced a lifestyle of encouragement, changing the atmosphere and lives of people everywhere he went. We can do the same. Full of powerful testimonies and practical application, this book will help you break out of your comfort zone and embrace a lifestyle of encouraging others--just as Jesus did. You will learn how to deepen your relationship with God, open a direct line of communication with him, and share his words with others.

Book excerpt: What happens when prophets are wrong? In 2020, many Christians claiming to be prophets said God told them that Donald Trump would be re-elected as president. Over thirty years before that, one the famous Kansas City Prophets, Paul Cain, prophesied that there would be a revival in London in 1990, which never came to pass. These examples make us wonder: What happens when prophets get it wrong? Are there consequences for misleading God's people? What would a genuine prophet look like today? And how can you tell a false prophet from a genuine one? In recent years, misjudgments among Charismatic Christians claiming to speak for God as well as moral failures within Evangelicalism have resulted in a crisis of belief. In Prophetic Integrity, bestselling author and speaker, R.T. Kendall gives a warning to those speaking in God's name and offers a way forward in trusting God despite the failures of the church. To unpack this difficult topic, Kendall, a self-described "Reformed charismatic," relates accounts of visions and supernatural experiences and shares stories and thoughts about Christian leaders that he knew personally, such as Paul Cain and Ravi Zacharias. He gives examples of good and bad prophecies and teaches a biblical and theologically-sound understanding of prophetic gifting and use. Prophetic Integrity is a book for those who believe that God still speaks today but have serious questions about those within the church that identify as prophets. It's a call for honesty, vulnerability, and repentance; and it speaks to Christians of many different traditions, including Charismatic and Evangelical. Discerning Christians of many different traditions can and must take both God's word and the gift of prophecy seriously and recognize how humans can abuse such gifts or use them to advance God's Kingdom.
