Book excerpt: The ultimate book on the worldwide movement of hackers, pranksters, and activists collectively known as Anonymous—by the writer the Huffington Post says “knows all of Anonymous’ deepest, darkest secrets” “A work of anthropology that sometimes echoes a John le Carré novel.” —Wired Half a dozen years ago, anthropologist Gabriella Coleman set out to study the rise of this global phenomenon just as some of its members were turning to political protest and dangerous disruption (before Anonymous shot to fame as a key player in the battles over WikiLeaks, the Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street). She ended up becoming so closely connected to Anonymous that the tricky story of her inside–outside status as Anon confidante, interpreter, and erstwhile mouthpiece forms one of the themes of this witty and entirely engrossing book. The narrative brims with details unearthed from within a notoriously mysterious subculture, whose semi-legendary tricksters—such as Topiary, tflow, Anachaos, and Sabu—emerge as complex, diverse, politically and culturally sophisticated people. Propelled by years of chats and encounters with a multitude of hackers, including imprisoned activist Jeremy Hammond and the double agent who helped put him away, Hector Monsegur, Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy is filled with insights into the meaning of digital activism and little understood facets of culture in the Internet age, including the history of “trolling,” the ethics and metaphysics of hacking, and the origins and manifold meanings of “the lulz.”

Book excerpt: Seven articles explore defining and measuring the police role, human resources planning, professionalism, internal communications, and police-citizen interactions. A model for assessing police crime control effectiveness emphasizes organizational and environmental factors affecting crime prevention goals. Urban police agencies should consider adopting a social planning perspective, measuring effectiveness by how well police serve the actual users of their services rather than the abstract 'public.' An analysis of police personnel planning finds that external factors (e.g., labor supply, economic trends) affecting data collection should be incorporated into any planning effort. An examination of professionalism concludes that police meet few of the criteria for professional standing and that it would be dangerous to award police professional privileges, such as confidentiality. A discussion of citizen complaints against urban police suggests that minorities' (particularly blacks) assessments of police performance are negatively affected by police practices. Analyses based on the Managerial Grid and Johari Window measures help synthesize current thinking about police managers' leadership and communication styles. Examining internal communications from the perspective of the individual officer, researchers find a moderate to weak association between officers' assessments of communications and job satisfaction. These findings are consistent with ethnographic interpretations and cast doubt on administrative assumptions derived from organizational and motivation theory. The articles include references and study data.

Book excerpt: In 2013, the film American Hustle was released. Its 1979 ABSCAM-inspired plot created renewed public interest in Larry Pressler, the South Dakota senator who was the only public official to turn down the illegal FBI bribe. He immediately reported the incident to the FBI. When Senator Pressler was told Walter Cronkite referred to him on the evening news as a "hero" he stated, "I do not consider myself a hero... what have we come to if turning down a bribe is 'heroic'?" Capitalizing on the public's renewed interest, Pressler, who was disillusioned by the partisan two-party system, chose to get back in the ring. It had been eighteen years since he left office, but with an open Senate seat in 2014, Pressler felt a calling urging him to run. Despite serving his twenty-two years in office as a Republican, Pressler ran this time as an Independent-he was tired of the partisan bickering in Washington and was unwilling to submit to either party's special interests. This book tells the journey of this unexpected candidacy and instills hope that with some much-needed effort, we can achieve a political renaissance. About the Author Senator Larry Pressler is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1975-1979) and the U.S. Senate (1979-1997). He is a Rhodes Scholar, a Harvard Law School graduate, a Vietnam combat veteran, a Fulbright professor, and a member of the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter, a powerful and cathartic portrait of a country grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic—from feeling afraid and overwhelmed to extraordinary resilient—told through voices of people from all across America The Covid-19 pandemic was a world-shattering event, affecting everyone in the nation. From its first ominous stirrings, renowned journalist Eli Saslow began interviewing a cross-section of Americans to capture their experiences in real time: An exhausted and anguished EMT risking his life in New York City; a grocery store owner feeding his neighborhood for free in locked-down New Orleans; an overwhelmed coroner in Georgia; a Maryland restaurateur forced to close his family business after forty-six years; an Arizona teacher wrestling with her fears and her obligations to her students; rural citizens adamant that the entire pandemic is a hoax, and retail workers attacked for asking customers to wear masks; patients struggling to breathe and doctors desperately trying to save them. Through Saslow's masterful, empathetic interviewing, we are given a kaleidoscopic picture of a people dealing with the unimaginable. These deeply personal accounts constitute a crucial, heartbreaking record of the sweep of experiences during this troubled time, and show us America from its worst and to its resilient best.

Book excerpt: America's crimes against the people of Iraq were shielded from public scrutiny by what senior U.S. military officers called the quiet, disguised, media-free approach developed in Central America in the 1980s. The echo chamber of the Western corporate media fleshed out the Pentagon's propaganda to create a virtual Iraq in the minds of the public, feeding a political discourse that bore no relation to the real war it was waging, the country it was destroying or the lives of its inhabitants. Davies takes apart the wall of propaganda surrounding one of history's most significant military disasters and most serious international crimes: non-existent WMDs; the equally fictitious centuries-old sectarian blood feud in Iraq; and the secrecy of the dirty war waged by American-led death squads. He places each aspect of the war within a context of illegal aggression, hostile military occupation and popular resistance, to uncover the brutal reality of a war that has probably killed at least a million people. From publisher description.
