Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato, and the Other Companions of Sokrates, Vol. 1 of 3 The present work is intended as a sequel and supplement to my History of Greece. It describes a portion of Hellenic philosophy: it dwells upon eminent individuals, enquiring, theorising, reasoning, confuting, &c., as contrasted with those collective political and social manifestations which form the matter of history, and which the modern writer gathers from Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon. Both Sokrates and Plato, indeed, are interesting characters in history as well as in philosophy. Under the former aspect, they were described by me in my former work as Oopiously as its general purpose would allow. But it is impossible to do justice to either of them - above all, to Plato, with his extreme variety and abundance - except in a book of which philosophy is the principal subject, and history only the accessory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives, Vol. 1 of 4: Translated From the Original Greek; With Notes, Historical and Critical; And a Life of Plutarch Ir the merit Of a work may be estimated from the universality Of its receptlon, Plutarch's Lives have a claim to the first honours Of literature. N O book has been more generally sought after, or read with eater avidit It was one of the first that were rought out 0 the retreats Of the learned, and translated into the modern languages. Amiot, Abbe Of Bellozane, ublished a French translation Of it in the reign of enry II.; and from that work it was translated into English, in the time Of queen Elizabeth. It is said by those who are not willing to allow Shakspeare much leamin that he availed him self O the last-mentione translation; but they seem to forget, that, in order to su port their argu ments Of this kind, it is necessary or them to prove that Plato, too, was translated Into English at the same time; for the celebrated soliloquy, TO be, or not to be, is taken, almost verbatim, from that philosopher; et we have never found that Plato was translate in those times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commentaries of Proclus on the Timæus of Plato, in Five Books, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing a Treasury of Pythagoric and Platonic Physiology When I speak however, of the perspicuity with which these particulars are developed, I do not mean that they are delivered in such a way, as to be obvious to every one, or that they may be apprehended as soon as read for this pertains only to the fungous and frivolous productions of the present day; but my mean ing is, that they are written with all the clearness, which they are naturally capa ble of admitting, or which agenrrine student of the philosophy' of Plato can desire. And this leads me to make some remarks on the iniquitous opinion which, since the revival of letters, has been generally entertained ofthe writings of l'roclrrs and other philosophers, who are distinguished by the appellation of the latter Plato his'ts', nurl to show the cause from which it originated. INTRODUCTION: THE Emperor Julian, speaking of the Cynic philosophy, says that it has been practised in all ages ... it does not need any special study, one need only hearken to the god of Delphi when he enjoins the precepts know thyself and alter the currency . In claiming the Delphic god as the founder of Cynicism Julian is guilty of an obvious anachronism for Cynicism cannot be shown to antedate Diogenes of Sinope. But from the fourth century B. C. Cynicism endured to the last days of the ancient world Cynics were common in the days of Augustine they may have been known in the Empire of Byzantium. Long life is not of itself a criterion of worth and it cannot be denied that Cynicism survived when much of immeasurably greater intellectual value perished. To the student of ancient philosophy there is in Cynicism scarcely more than a rudimentary and debased version of the ethics of Socrates, which exaggerates his austerity to a fanatic asceticism, hardens his irony to sardonic laughter at the follies of man kind, and affords no parallel to his genuine love of knowledge. Well might Plato have said of the first and greatest Cynic, That man is Socrates gone mad. But to the student of social history, and of ancient thought as distinct from philosophy, there is much of interest in Cynicism...
