Book Synopsis Security Without War by : Michael Shuman
Download or read book Security Without War written by Michael Shuman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War may be over, but the United States is still practicing Cold War foreign policies. From the Persian Gulf to El Salvador, from Bosnia to Somalia, U.S. policymakers continue to rely on force, threats, arms, and military aid. A fundamental redefinition of national security–beyond war and militarization, beyond bilateralism, beyond sovereign states–is long overdue. In Security Without War, a dynamic author team lays out new principles and policies for the United States to adopt in a post-Cold War world. Shuman and Harvey encourage Americans to take account of all threats (not just military ones), to emphasize preventing conflicts over winning wars, to enhance every nation's security (including that of its enemies), to favour multilateral approaches over bilateral ones, and to promote greater citizen participation in foreign policy. Throughout, they show how military, political, economic, and environmental security interests are all linked–and how emphasizing one over the others can undermine the nation's safety. Security Without War brings together for the first time the major elements of post-Cold War security thought. The authors show how a new framework for U.S. international relations can enhance U.S.–and indeed, global–security at a substantially lower cost.

Book Synopsis Doing Faithjustice by : Kammer, Fred, SJ
Download or read book Doing Faithjustice written by Kammer, Fred, SJ and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author defines faithjustice as “a passionate virtue which disposes citizens to become involved in the greater and lesser societies around themselves in order to create communities where human dignity is protected and enhanced, the gifts of creation are shared for the common good, and the poor are treated with respect and a special love.” He says it is in the end “a habit of the believing heart.” Against the backdrop of the author’s explicit experiences as a southerner, lawyer, priest, and Jesuit, this book expounds on the meaning of faithjustice, starting with the biblical grounding. It then traverses the full breadth of historical developments in the Catholic Christian community for more than 200 years and elucidates the meaning of faithjustice in our contemporary context. Underlining all this is the author’s conviction that only people who are living out faithjustice commitments can promote the truth about the necessity of solidarity and counter the pernicious mistrust that creates division in society. This updated edition includes new materials on creation and the jubilee tradition and on the parables of Jesus; the writings of Popes Benedict XVI and Francis and other social teaching documents from the past twenty years; and updated economic, racial, and social data and analysis in light of the justice tradition.
Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Download or read book A Shuddering Dawn written by Ira Chernus and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1989-08-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the symbolic meanings of the Bomb, this book excavates the "depth dimension" of the nuclear age. Rather than adding to the many ethical commentaries asking whether or not there should be nuclear weapons, the authors ask why there are nuclear weapons and a continuing arms race. They also address the kinds of symbolic changes that must occur in order to reverse the build-up of nuclear weapons. The authors approach these questions from the perspective of academic research, not from particular faith commitments, asking the reader to envision different human responses to this technology, human stances that can be illuminated by the creative insight of religious studies.

Book Synopsis The Police, Public Order and the State by : John D Brewer
Download or read book The Police, Public Order and the State written by John D Brewer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are police forces agents of the state or of society? How do different police forces maintain order? How does the nature of a country's political system affect the state's reaction to disorder? This study identifies trends in public-order policing across a broad sample of seven countries: Britain, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, the United States of America, Israel, South Africa and China. It explains why the handling of disorder has become a controversial and topical issue in different parts of the world. Each chapter provides a range of data on the size, make-up and cost of the police and follows a common format in analysing the place of the police at the junction of state-society relations.
