Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of Eighteenth Century Art and Illustrated Books: Being a Guide to Collectors of Illustrated Works in English and French of the Period To supply this long-outstanding want. Has been my primary motive in collecting the material now offered in book form, which will, I hope, furnish a key to the treasures so eagerly looked for by the connoisseur, though hitherto, for want of adequate guidance, not always looked for with prudence or with knowledge. My secondary reason - and one, I submit, hardly less worthy of consideration - has been to bring into harmony the productions of English and French literature of a parallel period, and to demonstrate that they are not only not imitative, but that each in its own sphere is creative. The love of pictures has from time immemorial been a passion more or less easily awakened in the human breast, but just as the early rude delineations of art have undergone a radical transformation, so the standard of appreciation has varied with each succeeding age. In the manuscripts of mediaeval times the dulness and monotony of the caligraphy were relieved by the interspersed decorations; and ornamental capitals, arabesque borders, and illuminated miniatures formed a redeeming feature of the text. The xylographic art, pre cursor of the invention of printing, was a maiden attempt to promulgate and popularize the miniature, which gradually developed into its present state of perfection. In woodcut illustrations Italy (the cradle of this art) and Germany took the lead; and the creations of Botticelli, Beham, Albert Durer, and their respective schools were the means of Spreading widely the culture of taste during the early stages of what may be called our art civilization. Book excerpt: "This book offers a comprehensive guide to descriptive bibliography--the activity of describing books as physical objects. The function of descriptive bibliography is to provide detailed historical accounts of the varied material forms in which texts have been transmitted and to show the relationships among those examples that claim to carry texts of the same work. The first part of this book contains five essays on general topics: an introduction to the field and its history; its relation to library cataloguing; the concept of ideal copy; the meanings of edition, impression, issue, and state; and tolerances in reporting details. The second part covers more specific subjects: transcription and collation; format; paper; typography and layout; typesetting and presswork; non-letterpress material; publishers' bindings, endpapers, and jackets; and overall arrangement. At the end is an appendix containing a sample description with detailed commentary, followed by a record of the literature of descriptive bibliography"--

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compiling a Bibliography: Practical Hints With Illustrative Examples Concerning the Collection, Recording, and Arrangement of Bibliographical Materials The next information to follow is the num ber of pages and signatures. Care should be taken that no inserted leaves or starred pages are overlooked and any irregularity in the number of leaves to_ signatures should be carefully noted. Then follows the record of illustrative mat ter. First in order should come plates, maps, tables, diagrams, etc., or matter which has been printed independently of the regular sig natures and afterwards inserted and bound up with the work. Following these may be added the number of text illustrations in the follow ing order, woodcuts, etc., facsimiles, and head and tail pieces, if other than conventional. This in general closes the bibliographical record of the book from a material point of view. Following this may come as notes, Ist, a list of the contents or a synopsis of the mat ter contained in the text. Ad, a list of the illustrations in the order above named with titles or description of each, especially if no such list appears in the book itself. And 3d a list of the maps, charts, diagrams, etc. The title, size, and scale Of each map should here be given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of Everyman's Library volumes that still survive somewhere in the world exceeds 70 million. Since the inception of the Library in 1906, nearly 1200 unique volumes have been published, constantly placing the world's greatest books before a large public. A few of these titles proved unpopular and were never reprinted. But most were reprinted dozens of times, packaged in numerous ways, and benefited from updated editorial work and book design over the last century. Terry Seymour has studied and researched every aspect of this great mass of books. He now captures and distills this knowledge in A Printing History of Everyman's Library 1906-1982. A critical feature, of course, is to update the various collecting factoids that have emerged since 2005 when his Guide to Collecting Everyman's Library was published. The meat of the new book, however, is the Bibliographical Entries section. Each volume that has ever been printed receives its own entry, detailing every printing, each dust jacket variation, any new introductions, updated scarcity numbers, and all relevant notes. Typically an entry contains at least six lines of information, but often much more. In essence, each entry is a story written exclusively about each volume. Armed with this resource, collectors and booksellers can know reliably everything about the Everyman's Library volume that sits on their shelf or is ready to be purchased or sold. They will see how a book fits into the total printing history of that title, and be able to describe and value the book with precision. To further enhance the value of this book, color images illustrate all of the key collecting points. An extensive index of editors, translators and artists is now included. Not just a solo effort, the Printing History has been vetted by other expert collectors, ensuring greater accuracy and comprehensiveness.
