For example, this edition includes a new, detailed section on Japanese moku hanga woodblock printing while the more traditional techniques of relief, intaglio, collograph, lithography, screen printing and monoprint have also been refreshed. The addition of new images showing a broader range of subject matter, include more contemporary prints and international artists. Each technique is explored from the development of the printing or digital matrix, through the different stages of creation to image output. Guidance on how to set up a print studio, sections on troubleshooting techniques and the inclusion of up–to–date lists of suppliers, workshops and galleries make this an essential volume for beginner and experienced printmakers alike. Your shirt will be stained anyways. At some point, you will harness the power of the sun. Go ahead, look inside. You will see that you do not need a fancy studio to print a T-shirt or a picnic blanket. There is no specialized machine required to print anything you want in any room you want. A mural, a dartboard, a deck of cards, these are all possible. In a week or a month, you will wake up to find you know words like acetate and substrate. You will be comfortable talking about ink and shopping at military supply stores. Perhaps most important of all, you will be printing images of things onto other things.

Radically different from digital print production (inkjet on high-quality paper), Post-Digital Printmaking integrates Computer Numeric Control (CNC) devices such as laser cutters and CNC routers with matrix production for lithography, intaglio and relief. This contemporary practice incorporates the strengths of both digital and traditional, resulting in hybrid printmaking techniques. A comprehensive and accessible technical introduction to this important area of printmaking, this book explains techniques and processes in detail, discusses the contexts within which Post-Digital Printmaking has arisen, and includes examples and case studies of artists applying these hybrid techniques in their work.

Book excerpt: This is a facsimile edition of the first book to document and explore nontraditional "pressure printing" techniques for creating multicolor shading in relief printing of wood engravings and linoleum blocks. The author shows the process for applying shaped backing layers behind the paper to be printed, in order to create a unique artistic effect. "Several of the methods described require but one engraved block for producing prints in any number of colors, while the traditional method requires a separate engraved block for each color used, and in another method the engraved block is not necessary at all for making prints in many colors," the author writes. Experiments in Relief Print Making, by Charles Smith, was originally published in 1954 by the University of Virginia Press in a limited edition of 300 copies. It features six images printed by letterpress in multiple colors from hand-cut plates and the artist's original make-ready layers. Each color print is accompanied by reproductions showing separations of the individual color layers in isolation. For the facsimile edition all of the finished images and layers are displayed at their full original size, using high resolution scans from the limited edition 1954 book. "The term 'direct impression' as used here means that the block has been engraved and color transferred directly from the engraved block to the printing paper. The make-ready or indirect impression is different in that pressure is applied to the reverse side of the paper causing the image to offset from a block to the printing paper. This impression is never as sharp and clear as the direct impressions. Usually a combination of the two will produce softness and sharpness, although either may be used separately for certain desirable effects."

Book excerpt: Learn how to push the boundaries of monoprinting with a range of techniques explained by two practising artists. Monoprinting is a printmaking process in which a drawing or painting – executed on a flat, unworked printing plate or other surface – is transferred using pressure to a sheet of paper. A spontaneous and exciting process, the medium is also effective, convenient and does not necessarily require a press. Only one strong impression can be taken, hence the term monoprint. In this book, Jackie Newell and Dee Whittington show you how to push the boundaries of monoprinting with various techniques and demonstrate some unique possibilities available to you from screenprinting to collage prints. Through colourful illustrations, the authors also showcase work by a variety of printmakers from around the world for inspiration.
