Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Physiology: Applied to the Preservation of Health, and to the Improvement of Physical and Mental Education It is true, that almost every medical man, sooner or later, works out this knowledge for himself; but, in general, be attains it later than he ought to do, and seldom so completely as he would have done had it been made a part of his elementary education, to'which he saw others attach importance. In my own instance, it was only when entering upon prac tice that I had first occasion to feel and to observe the evils arising from the ignorance which prevails in society in regard to it. Impressed afterward more deeply than ever with the interest and utility of the study, I contributed two or three articles on the subject to one of our periodical journals, and re solved to make them the basis, at some future time, of a more detailed and connected exposition. This I have now attempted and, if the result prove use ful, in any degree, to the general reader or profes sional student, my object will be attained. The volume being of a purely elementary character, and admitted truths of a useful kind being, in every in stance, preferred to novelty or ingenious specula tion, the experienced practitioner will meet with lit tle to interest him in the perusal but for him it was never intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Physiology and Hygiene for Use in Schools The aim of the author in writing the present work has been to furnish an elementary text-book in physi ology and hygiene which should recognize some of the more important discoveries of recent years concerning matters pertaining to health, and which should also attempt to exemplify in the clearest way the inter relation between physiology and hygiene. The primary object of the study of physiology in our schools is to inculcate an intelligent care of the body. With this in view, matters of hygiene must in one sense take first place, although our understanding of hygiene must be based upon a knowledge of physi ology. In the present work the study of the body, of its various parts and their functions, is given full and comprehensive treatment; at the same time lessons on hygiene are given as natural results of the principles of physiology and as closely related thereto. A knowledge of foods and their values and of the causes and distribution of contagious and other germ diseases is of vital importance to every boy and girl. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Studies Applied Physiology and Hygiene Anatomy and physiology, except in their simple elements, are of doubtful value for young pupils. But the study of how to keep well, or hygiene, is something that every boy and girl, man and woman, must learn or else must suffer for his ignorance. Hygiene, properly presented. Deals with things of everyday life. No pupil in the schools is too young to begin to learn how to adjust himself successfully to his surroundings. This learning how to meet our environment, as Professor Huxley long ago said, constitutes a liberal education. Many of the school texts have been based too exclusively on physiology, or have dealt largely with elementary anatomy, and have been difficult of comprehension to the pupils. Health studies differs materially from such books. It makes hygiene the primary study, and introduces only a sufficient amount of physiology to form a sound basis for the study of health principles. If this small book succeeds in helping its readers to think for themselves; if it encourages them in making their own definitions; if it leads them to realize that it is not ignorance but knowledge which leads to health, and there fore happiness; and finally, if it helps to prepare them to meet practical life as they will find it, - then its appear ance will have been justified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Physiology: Being a Practical Textbook of Physiological Principles and Their Applications to Problems of Health With the idea that children ought not to be taught the matter that is in a book of this kind because it may bring into their minds thoughts of sickness, the author is, of course, not in agreement. The real and vivid ideas of disease that are in the minds of children come not from books, but from personal ex perience on beds of sickness from first-hand knowledge of the suffering of disease-stricken parents, brothers, and sisters; and from the sudden vanishing of playmates and friends. As long as disease is in the lives of children, it will be in their minds, and the way to put it out of their minds is to banish it from their lives. The author has done his part in the writing of this series of books with the hope that they would do something to bring sunshine and happiness into the lives of the children that now are and are yet to be. He believes that modern hygienic knowledge is able to free our people from most of their illnesses, and that this knowledge ought to be given to the people by the schools that have been founded for their instruction. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene The facts of Anatomy and Physiology are put as sim ply and clearly as possible; something in the way of object lessons, with the child himself as an object. The pupil is encouraged to look in the fields and markets to see the truth of the statements made, and is constantly referred to the pictures that illustrate the text for a bet ter understanding. Common diseases are mentioned, and the habits that lead to them emphasized. The book is in two parts, because it seems wiser to learn the parts and uses of a machine before attempting to run it, and the dependence of the systems is so inti mate that a knowledge of all should precede an attempt to study the hygiene of any one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Hygiene: A Primer of Physiology In these lessons for young children simple language is used in the presentation of such facts about the structure of the body and its functions as are necessary for clear and definite knowledge of the general laws of health, including the effects of alcohol and narcotics. This book is for the use of pupils just beginning to learn something of the care the human body requires in order to insure the full enjoyment of health. The value of a primary book upon any subject depends both upon the language used and the varied forms of appeal to the child's mind, in order that his interest may be aroused. In this book there are few complex sentences. There is, also, such frequent alter nation in story, written exercise, and observation, picture, memory, and reading lessons that the subject-matter cannot become trite. The lessons are so logically arranged, and so pedagogically co-ordinated, that every sentence, every ques tion, every picture, every poem, every written exercise, forms a vital part in the presentation of hygienic law as an educational whole, in a form most readily comprehended by the child. Anatomy, strictly speaking, is a science the study of which requires the more mature mind of the advanced high school or college student. Only such basal facts of thebody's structure are here presented as are necessary for a clear understanding of the laws of health.
