The classic on this subject, "An Introduction to the Study of Metallurgy," by the distinguished late Sir William Roberts-Austen, has not been revised for a number of years. The author in his work in teaching metallurgy has frequently felt the lack of a suitable reference and text-book on the important subject of introductory metallurgy, and knows that this want is shared by others. This volume endeavors to supply this want. The subject is treated from the modern view-points, and metallurgists in general will probably find something of interest in the volume, particularly in the chapters on alloys, measurement of high temperatures, slags, and mattes. The sources of information are fully covered by references in foot-notes, by means of which the author acknowledges his indebtedness to the many workers in the scientific fields which have a bearing on the subject in hand. For material for the chapter on "Metals from the Historic Point of View" is derived in part from the works of Roesing and Neumann, to whom the author expresses his indebtedness. For material in the chapter on "Slag" the author has drawn largely on the invaluable work of J. H. L. Vogt, which has been so far unrecognized in this country. It takes so long to print a book that drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, but the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same. A book issued in England refers courteously to the former edition of this work, but states that little information is given concerning the practical details of operation. That 'same book sets forth that an open-hearth furnace is charged by putting the pig-iron in first; that in a. Twenty-five-ton furnace not over nine men can be employed, even when there are doors on both sides, and that with rapid work it takes two hours to charge a heat. Now those figures are true for the district with which that writer was familiar, but in America the pig-iron is put in last, while at Steel ton on a furnace of the size mentioned we use twice the number of men and with good scrap finish the work by charging, by hand labor only, in a period ranging from thirty minutes down to eleven minutes. Of equal value is much of the ao-called practical infor mation given in metallurgical treatises. It only remains to thank many friends, both at home and abroad, for aiding in this work which has been accomplished in the intervals of what I trust is not otherwise an entirely idle life. Though we have several books treating of certain branches of the metallurgy of copper, such as the valuable volumes of Peters, Greenawalt, and others, there does not exist a modern book which covers the entire ground as the present work aims to do. In the study of processes there are given the principles and the practice. The discussion of principles is confined to the essential points; for an extended presentation the reader is referred to my treatise on General Metallurgy. The examples of practice are drawn mainly from the United States. The text and footnotes will show that the technical literature on copper has been covered. The details of practice, not recorded in print, have been obtained through visits to and detailed studies of the leading copper smelteries and refineries of the United States; additional information has been available through correspondence. The tables giving the working data of the leading plants of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Australia show the extent of the field which has been covered. In all my visits and correspondence I have met with the greatest cordiality and liberality. I wish to express here my obligation to the heads and officers of the different smelteries and refineries for the assistance they have rendered me in my task; without this cordial and liberal aid it would not have been possible to prepare this treatise. In working out the details, especially in the large number of calculations, I have been much assisted by the collaboration of my colleague Professor C.R. Hayward.
