Book excerpt: Written in an informal, first-person writing style that makes abstract concepts easier to understand, PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS transforms the way students learn thermodynamics. While continuing to provide strong coverage of fundamental principles and applications, the book asks students to explore how changes in a particular parameter can change a device's or process' performance. This approach helps them develop a better understanding of how to apply thermodynamics in their future careers and a stronger intuitive feel for how the different components of thermodynamics are interrelated. Throughout the book, students are encouraged to develop computer-based models of devices, processes, and cycles and to take advantage of the speed of Internet-based programs and computer apps to find thermodynamic data, just as practicing engineers do. Book excerpt: Master the fundamentals of thermodynamics and learn how to apply these skills in engineering practice today with Reisel's PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS, SI, 2nd Edition. This edition's informal, first-person writing style helps make abstract concepts easier to understand. In addition to mastering fundamental principles and applications, you explore the impact of different system parameters on the performance of devices and processes. For example, you study how changing outlet pressure in a turbine changes the power produced or how the power requirement of a compressor varies with inlet temperature. This unique approach strengthens your understanding of how different components of thermodynamics interrelate, while demonstrating how you will use thermodynamics in your engineering career. You also learn to develop computer-based models of devices, processes and cycles as well as use internet-based programs and computer apps to find thermodynamic data, exactly like today's practicing engineers.

Book excerpt: This textbook is for a one semester introductory course in thermodynamics, primarily for use in a mechanical or aerospace engineering program, although it could also be used in an engineering science curriculum. The book contains a section on the geometry of curves and surfaces, in order to review those parts of calculus that are needed in thermodynamics for interpolation and in discussing thermodynamic equations of state of simple substances. It presents the First Law of Thermodynamics as an equation for the time rate of change of system energy, the same way that Newton’s Law of Motion, an equation for the time rate of change of system momentum, is presented in Dynamics. Moreover, this emphasis illustrates the importance of the equation to the study of heat transfer and fluid mechanics. New thermodynamic properties, such as internal energy and entropy, are introduced with a motivating discussion rather than by abstract postulation, and connection is made with kinetic theory. Thermodynamic properties of the vaporizable liquids needed for the solution of practical thermodynamic problems (e.g. water and various refrigerants) are presented in a unique tabular format that is both simple to understand and easy to use. All theoretical discussions throughout the book are accompanied by worked examples illustrating their use in practical devices. These examples of the solution of various kinds of thermodynamic problems are all structured in exactly the same way in order to make, as a result of the repetitions, the solution of new problems easier for students to follow, and ultimately, to produce themselves. Many additional problems are provided, half of them with answers, for students to do on their own.

Book excerpt: Energy-its discovery, its availability, its use-concerns all of us in general and the engineers of today and tomorrow in particular. The study of thermodynamics-the science of energy-is a critical element in the education of all types of engineers. Engineering Thermodynamics provides a thorough intro duction to the art and science of engineering thermodynamics. It describes in a straightforward fashion the basic tools necessary to obtain quantitative solutions to common engineering applications involving energy and its conversion, conser vation, and transfer. This book is directed toward sophomore, junior, and senior students who have studied elementary physics and calculus and who are majoring in mechanical engineering; it serves as a convenient reference for other engineering disciplines as well. The first part of the book is devoted to basic thermodynamic principles, essentially presented in the classic way; the second part applies these principles to many situations, including air conditioning and the interpretation of statistical phenomena.

Book excerpt: Many textbooks on differential equations are written to be interesting to the teacher rather than the student. Introduction to Differential Equations with Dynamical Systems is directed toward students. This concise and up-to-date textbook addresses the challenges that undergraduate mathematics, engineering, and science students experience during a first course on differential equations. And, while covering all the standard parts of the subject, the book emphasizes linear constant coefficient equations and applications, including the topics essential to engineering students. Stephen Campbell and Richard Haberman--using carefully worded derivations, elementary explanations, and examples, exercises, and figures rather than theorems and proofs--have written a book that makes learning and teaching differential equations easier and more relevant. The book also presents elementary dynamical systems in a unique and flexible way that is suitable for all courses, regardless of length.

Book excerpt: Designed as an undergraduate-level textbook in Chemical Engineering, this student-friendly, thoroughly class-room tested book, now in its second edition, continues to provide an in-depth analysis of chemical engineering thermodynamics. The book has been so organized that it gives comprehensive coverage of basic concepts and applications of the laws of thermodynamics in the initial chapters, while the later chapters focus at length on important areas of study falling under the realm of chemical thermodynamics. The reader is thus introduced to a thorough analysis of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics as well as their applications to practical situations. This is followed by a detailed discussion on relationships among thermodynamic properties and an exhaustive treatment on the thermodynamic properties of solutions. The role of phase equilibrium thermodynamics in design, analysis, and operation of chemical separation methods is also deftly dealt with. Finally, the chemical reaction equilibria are skillfully explained. Besides numerous illustrations, the book contains over 200 worked examples, over 400 exercise problems (all with answers) and several objective-type questions, which enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts and theory discussed. The book will also be a useful text for students pursuing courses in chemical engineering-related branches such as polymer engineering, petroleum engineering, and safety and environmental engineering. New to This Edition • More Example Problems and Exercise Questions in each chapter • Updated section on Vapour–Liquid Equilibrium in Chapter 8 to highlight the significance of equations of state approach • GATE Questions up to 2012 with answers
