Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture The method of treatment adopted in this book is the simple, scientific method, - that of presenting essential facts in logical order. The following of this method has led to some departures from the conventional way of presenting poultry topics. The unity of the poultry group is here conceived as essential and arising from the nature of the birds, rather than as artificial and relating to the purposes for which they are used; and I have tried to give practical effect to my very strong conviction that permanent poultry culture must be a feature in permanent agriculture, and that each of the common kinds of poultry has its peculiar place in agriculture. Hence the methods of managing the different kinds of poultry are not stated separately, as has been usual, but topics are discussed in their own appropriate order with reference to all the kinds. This arrangement emphasizes the things which apply alike to all kinds of poultry, and makes it easy to show that good practice is simple and that the same treatment will usually answer, in whole or in part, for several different kinds, thus lightening the work of the poultry keeper. It is believed also that by this arrangement of matter the student or reader is given, with instruction in the details of methods, a more comprehensive view of the subject as a whole than by the usual mode of presenting it. To the best of my ability the book gives the consensus of authoritative opinion of a many-sided subject. In appraising this consensus I have had regard alike to practical authority, expressed in the views and practice of good poultrymen, and to scientific authority, found in the bulletins and other papers of those instructors and investigators who have been foremost in reducing to order the confused mass of common knowledge of poultry culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Poultry Culture The object of this volume is to furnish reliable and practical information on the profitable care and management of poultry. I have endeavored to take the reader, presumably a beginner, into the field of practical poultry work, telling him what to do, and how and when to do it. I have catered especially to those who desire to keep only a small flock of fowls for pleasure or profit, but most of the matter contained herein will also apply to poultry keeping on a more extensive scale. In order to make this treatise as brief and yet as comprehensive as possible, everything of a theoretical or imaginative nature has been omitted, as well as all unnecessary things. I have made use of only valuable and practical facts, which are the result of my personal experience in the handling of fowls on both a large and a small scale. This is, essentially, a business book for busy people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry for Profit: A Practical Manual for Beginners, Farmers and Side-Line Poultrymen This book is designed as a simple outline of the principles of poultry culture and a resume of the most up-to-date methods in use among practical poultrymen. There is no best method for any part of poultry work, but there are a few broad principles underlying all, which must be grasped by the learner who is seeking for best results. Naturally, such a book must be largely a compilation, and the writer acknowledges her indebtedness to the bulletins of the Missouri, Oregon, California, Iowa, Indiana, Maine and New York Experiment Stations, to Robinson's "Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture," Milo Basting's "Dollar Hen," Brigham's Progressive "Poultry Culture," the Reliable Poultry Journal Publishing Company's Turkey and Duck Books, I. K. Felch's Poultry Culture, and many current publications which cannot be specifically mentioned here. Grateful acknowledgment is also made of the courtesy of the Missouri, California and Oregon Experiment Stations for the loan of valuable photographs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Poultry Culture: A Text-Book of Study and Practice in the Keeping of Poultry for Profit and Pleasure This book was commenced in New England, continued in Maryland, and completed in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It contains, in condensed form, the results of practice, study, experience, and observation while dwelling in the north, south, east, and west of our great American country, and of experience and investigation during a residence of seven years in Asia and Europe. In the preparation of the volume there has been a continuous, earnest purpose to lay the foundation for good poultry practice in true, scientific principles. The treatment of many of the subjects has been influenced by numerous opportunities to study and solve, cooperatively, the particular poultry problems of hundreds of correspondence students located in almost all quarters of the globe. The valuable results of investigations at several of the state agricultural experiment stations are included in the book. Especial credit should be given for the work of the New York State Station in determining scientific standards for balanced rations of fowls, and for the results of the experiments of the Maine State Station in breeding for egg-production, housing, and methods of feeding. Hearty commendation is here given to Mr. F. H. Stoneburn, a former student of the author, for the execution of excellent drawings of poultry buildings and appliances, used for illustrating several subjects. Particular mention should be made of the courtesy of Mr. E. E. Richards, editor and publisher of the Western Poultry Journal, in furnishing a number of fine illustrations of typical fowls, the owners of which are given due credit in the text. This volume will have fulfilled the purpose of its publication if it proves helpful to many practical poultrymen and poultrywomen, beginners and veterans alike, and provides instruction for numerous students of poultry culture in college, school, and home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Poultry Culture: A Concise and Practical Treatise on the Management of Poultry for Profit This little book is intended for those who are about to embark on the troubled seas of poultry raising, or those who wish to gain new ideas on the subject. It is just a plain, practical poultry book, giving the natural and artificial methods of raising, together with some, I trust, helpful hints all along the road. I have tried to give, in concise form, what knowledge I have gained from observation and personal work during the past fourteen years. I am indebted to the poultry press for many ideas which I have tested and found reliable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Utility Poultry Farming These notes, of necessity somewhat fragmentary, have been written to encourage people in the National importance of Utility Poultry Keeping, and to indicate the way how poultry may be kept as a business, and at the same time made an interesting hobby. My wife started her farm first of all to help her country, by producing food for the community; secondly, to show the farmers and our neighbours what could be done with poultry if worked on scientific and business lines; and thirdly, not being able to leave home to undertake war work at a distance, she thought as we lived in the country, and having been devoted to poultry all her life, it was the right thing to do. Further, she has the advantage in having an experienced poultry-man. The farm is one of 10 acres, and I have no hesitation in saying that the results, so far, have amply justified the expenditure of capital made, and that Commercial Poultry Farming, when carefully conducted as a business, is not only of daily increasing interest, but a sound commercial investment, the return more than compensating for the time and labour expended upon it. The Poultry Farmer will, naturally, as in other business undertakings, have difficulties to face from time to time. Let his or her motto be "Nil desperandum," and further, remember, that by supplying a much-needed and useful article of food, this is certainly helping to counteract the foreign importation of eggs, and keeping money in circulation at borne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Breeding and Management The remarkable development of poultry culture during the past two decades is one of the outstanding features of American agriculture. Twenty years ago the possibilities of poultry-keeping as an industry were scarcely dreamed of. While it does not yet receive the consideration it deserves - far from it - nevertheless it has made immense gains both in popular recognition and in production. This has been brought about by a better realization of the pro ductive value of the hen. The idea of fuss and feathers, long associated with the keeping of fowls, has gradually given way to the idea of a poultry industry whose first and only business, as an industry, is the production of eggs and meat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Art of Poultry Culture In placing this volume before the public, the author fully realizes the responsibility that rests upon one who assumes so grave an undertaking. The poultry industry has reached such proportions, the amount of capital invested is growing so rapidly and the ultimate success of the individual is so necessary, that a treatise on the poultry industry should be compiled in the most careful and painstaking manner. Since childhood, poultry has had its allurements for the author, who spent his early years upon a farm. The training given by the high school, the college, the university, and the subsequent practice of the law, has enabled the author to enjoy keenly the fancier's labors and assisted him to fully realize that in the field of poultry culture it is brains, not brawn, that win success. Whatever of merit is to be found in this treatise is largely due to the years of assistance given by various Government experiment stations throughout the United States and Canada, to the efficiency of the poultry journals, to the special treatises of value, to the splendid exhibitions, and to the practical experience of the author as a fancier, each of which has had a share in the general education leading to this volume. This education is opening to the author the possibilities that lie ahead for the student in poultrydom, and the vast extent and importance of this field in the commercial world. To Wm. E. Becker, is due the credit for valuable aid and the excellent chapter upon the "Vices, Enemies, Parasites and Diseases of Poultry and their Proper Treatment," and who in turn wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Salmon and other prominent authorities. The author will feel that this volume will not have been in vain if it shall prove helpful and instructive to poultry lovers, whether they are beginners or veterans in the business or whether they are in college, on a city lot, or on the farm.
