Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great increase in the use of furs during the past few decades has caused the fur dressing and dyeing industry to rise from relative insignificance to considerable importance as a branch of applied chemistry. The past eight years, moreover, have witnessed the virtual transference of the leadership in the dressing and dyeing of furs from Europe to America, and in the quality and variety of products, the domestic industry is now in every way the equal of, and in many respects superior to the foreign. The great bulk of American furs which formerly were sent to Leipzig, Paris or London to be dressed and dyed, are now being dressed and dyed in this country. In spite of these facts, very little is generally known about the nature and manner of the work constituting the dressing and dyeing of furs. Even among members of other branches of the fur trade, there is very little accurate information on the subject. Real knowledge concerning fur dressing and dyeing is possessed only by those actually engaged in the industry. The interest and efforts of scientists and technologists have been enlisted to only a small extent in the technical development of the industry. The reason for this may be attributed to two related causes: first, the almost monastic seclusion in which fur dressers and dyers, particularly the latter, conducted their operations, and even to-day the heavy cloud of mystery is being dispelled but very slowly; and second, as a consequence of the first, the lack of any reliable literature on the subject.

Book excerpt: Furskin Processing is concerned with the art and science of furskin processing, from dressing to dyeing and bleaching, finishing, and sheepskin processing. A definition of terms is included. This book consists of eight chapters; the first of which provides a historical background of the dressing and dyeing of furskins and the evolution of fur trade. The reader is then introduced to raw materials used in furskin processing, including animal fibers, keratin, and collagen. The pigmentation, quality, and properties of the pelt or leather side of the furskin are also discussed, along with the effects of singe and shedding on furskin quality and seasonal changes in furskins. The next chapter describes the main sources of the many species of furskin, together with other details important to the dresser and dyer. This book explains as well the methods used in dressing, dyeing, and bleaching of furskin, as well as the final presentation of the dressed or dyed furskin. The final chapter considers the techniques used in the dressing and dyeing of sheepskin. This book is intended primarily for chemists, ""practical"" dressers and dyers, and other members of the fur trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the industrial era, asbestos was a widely acclaimed benchmark material. During its heyday, it was manufactured into nearly three thousand different products, most of which protected life and property from heat, flame, and electricity. It was used in virtually every industry from hotel keeping to military technology to chemical manufacturing, and was integral to building construction from shacks to skyscrapers in every community across the United States. Beginning in the mid-1960s, however, this once popular mineral began a rapid fall from grace as growing attention to the serious health risks associated with it began to overshadow the protections and benefits it provided. In this thought-provoking and controversial book, Rachel Maines challenges the recent vilification of asbestos by providing a historical perspective on Americans’ changing perceptions about risk. She suggests that the very success of asbestos and other fire-prevention technologies in containing deadly blazes has led to a sort of historical amnesia about the very risks they were supposed to reduce. Asbestos and Fire is not only the most thoroughly researched and balanced look at the history of asbestos, it is also an important contribution to a larger debate that considers how the risks of technological solutions should be evaluated. As technology offers us ever-increasing opportunities to protect and prevent, Maines urges that learning to accept and effectively address the unintended consequences of technological innovations is a growing part of our collective responsibility.
