Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Aeroplanes The present volume is the outcome of an endeavour to fulfil an aeronautical need, which must have been experienced by most designers, draughtsmen, and students, in entering the field of aeronautics - namely, the absence of collected data and design methods. In other branches of engineering one finds numerous design and pocket books containing a compendium Of useful information, and fulfilling most of the ordinary requirements. In aeronautical engineering, however, although there are numerous works of a more or less popular and romantic nature, yet the absence of similar design and pocket books is marked, no doubt on account of the more recent development of this branch. The chief Object of the present work is to present in a simple yet brief form the principles underlying the design of aeroplanes from the standpoint of the mechanical engineer, and to collect and tabulate some of the data which experience has shown to be useful in design work. A chapter has been included dealing with the more important mechanical principles involved in aeronautical design, with an indication as to their utility and application. Obviously, the subject Of aeroplane design is now so wide that it is impossible either to treat each branch of the subject in full, or to embrace every branch, but it is hoped in the complete series of aeronautical manuals to cover most of the ground; the author, for these reasons, seeks the indulgence Of the reader for any apparent incompleteness in the present work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Principles and Design of Aeroplanes" by Herbert Chatley is a seminal piece on the workings of an aeroplane. It not only details out the theoretical principles involved in flight mechanics but also the design elements and technology that goes into creating a functional aeroplane. Chatley uses simple language to deconstruct some highly complex subject matter for the lay reader to understand. Replete with diagrams and calculations that showcase the various elements which play a part in aeroplane design, the author provides a comprehensive overview of all the intricacies involved in the process of making an aeroplane. Chatley divides "Principles and Design of Aeroplanes" into ten different chapters including separate sections on air pressure, propellers and motors, balancing in the air, construction techniques, challenges faced and the future of aeroplanes among other aspects. Chatley's immense knowledge and expertise shines through in the entire text, however it is even more accentuated when he discusses the challenges and future developments in the air space. It is here that the reader will be able to fully understand and appreciate the far sighted and revolutionary ideas of the author. Unlike other works that take on a textbook approach to the physics involved in aeroplane design, Chatley creates a fine balance between a gripping narrative and technical information. It is this quality in "Principles and Design of Aeroplanes" which makes it enlightening not just for students of science and aeronautical engineering but casual enthusiasts as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aeroplane Construction a Handbook on the Various Methods and Details of Construction Employed in the Building of Aeroplanes The articles embodied with other matter in this book, were intended as a broad survey of the principles and details of modern aeroplane construction, concerning which there is a noticeable deficit amongst existing aeronautical literature. They were written at a time when specific references to modern British aircraft were forbidden, and although from a comparative point of view this is to be regretted, the details and methods dealt with are, in the author's opinion, representative of those most generally used in machines of present-day design. It is hoped that the book will appeal not only to those engaged on the manufacture, but also to those concerned with the uses of aircraft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Principles of Aeroplane Design and Construction: A Textbook for Students, Draughtsmen, and Engineers The object of the present volume is to endeavour to fulfil the needs of students, draughtsmen, and others, for an inexpensive book of an elementary nature, dealing with the fundamental principles under lying the design and, to a certain extent, the construction of aeroplanes. The subject of aeroplane design is essentially one involving a thorough knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, combined with a practical knowledge of the existing conditions to be ful filled, and a firm acquaintance with the results of aerodynamical research. To the student approaching the subject for the first time much difficulty is presented, owing to the widely scattered sources of information, and to the specialized and often difficult nature of the information when obtained. It is therefore hoped that the present book will prove helpful in placing before the reader, in a more or less intelligible form, the general principles underlying aeroplane design, and in serving as a breach or introduction to more advanced treatises. The general scheme of the book, which is based upon the author's larger revised volume Design of Aeroplanes, is to deal with the aerodynamical and stability principles first, and to follow on with the general application of these and of the mechanical principles to design work. The treatment has been intentionally confined to principles rather than to particular cases, tabulated data, etc., for it is the common experience that, given the necessary preliminary training in mathematics, graphics, mechanics, and other ground subjects, a thorough knowledge of principles is of greater impor tance in design and constructional work than the absorption of a mass of disconnected facts and figures. The latter information is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building and Flying an Aeroplane: A Practical Handbook Covering the Design, Construction, and Operation of Aeroplanes and Gliders But in this ease of accomplishment lies a danger, namely, the belittling of the value of accurate design and the misjudging of the true importance of small things. The inventive mind usually believes itself capable of making improvements in almost anything, and the aeroplane inventor is no exception to the rule. Filled with the confidence born of ignorance, and with only the knowledge he has gleaned from newspaper and magazine accounts of the popular types of machines, he works out a brand new design. The usual, in fact, the invariable result is failure, discouragement, and a loss of time and money. How much more sensible for the young inventor to build his first machine without varying in one particular from a tried and proved model, leaving his flights of inventive fancy to his later years of maturer knowledge and judgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Aviation As a result of considerable experience obtained last year in instructing prospective aviators and mechanics, and in response to an, insistent demand, the writer prepared a treatise on air plane power-plants called Aviation Engines, which has met with a very gratifying reception and which is used by many aviation schools as a text on this subject. Instructors who are using the engine book successfully and numerous students who have derived some benefit from its contents have asked for an exposition of the airplane in which its operation and te pair principles would be written in the same simple non-tech nical manner as the treatise referring to power-plants.
