Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baptist of Russia, Vladimir, is a key figure of the today's Nationalistic policy and culture of the country. Our actual knowledge about the prince who governed from 978-1015 in Kiev is however extremely little. Our views are based on the texts, which were written down a long time after his death and contain political, religious and national interpretations with which rulers ofdifferent periods sought to justify publicly their own policy with reference to the Baptist of Russia. For the first time the figure of the St. Vladimir occurred, as the religious east west contrast around the turn from the 13th to 14th Century in Europe was finally fixed. With the posthumous interpretation of the lifework Vladimirs conquests of the ascending Muscovite empire from the 14th to 16th Century were justified. The veneration of St. Vladimir returned with the Muscovites conquest and the Russification of the Ukraine in the 17th to 19th Century into the homeland of the prince, to Kiev.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the patristic age until the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, computus -- the science of time reckoning and art of calendar construction -- was a matter of intense concern. Bede's The Reckoning of Time (De temporum ratione) was the first comprehensive treatise on this subject and the model and reference for all subsequent teaching discussion and criticism of the Christian calendar. It is a systematic exposition of the Julian solar calendar and the Paschal table of Dionysius Exiguus, with their related formulae for calculating dates. But it is more than a technical handbook. Bede sets calendar lore within a broad scientific framework and a coherent Christian concept of time, and incorporates themes as diverse as the theory of tides and the doctrine of the millennium. This translation of the full text of The Reckoning of Time includes an extensive historical introduction and a chapter-by-chapter commentary. It will interest historians of medieval science, theology, and education, Bede scholars and Anglo-Saxonists, liturgists, and Church historians. It will also serve as an accessible introduction to computus itself. Generations of medieval computists nourished their expertise in Bede's orderly presentation; modern scholars in quest of safe passage through this complex terrain can hope for no better guide.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prince of the Apostles: A Study The present study still further assumes that the Church of Rome which is at once the largest and most famous church' in Christendom, a church so constituted that it cannot formally change, and so closely related to the English people as to be the mother of their Christianity, has a first claim upon the consideration of all Christians, and more particularly of ourselves. In regard to our divisions, we should be amaz ed and shocked by them, were it not for the dead weight of custom; and no theory Of unity that the wit Of man can devise will serve to excuse them, or to explain them away. Book excerpt: Origen’s On First Principles is a foundational work in the development of Christian thought and doctrine: it is the first attempt in history at a systematic Christian theology. For over a decade it has been out of print with only expensive used copies available; now it is available at an affordable price and in a more accessible format. On First Principles is the most important surviving text written by third-century Church father, Origen. Origen wrote in a time when fundamental doctrines had not yet been fully articulated by the Church, and contributed to the very formation of Christianity. Readers see Origen grappling with the mysteries of salvation and brainstorming how they can be understood. This edition presents G. W. Butterworth’s trusted translation in a new, more readable format, retains the introduction by Henri de Lubac, and includes a new foreword by John C. Cavadini. As St. Gregory of Nazianzus, Doctor of the Church, wrote: “Origen is the stone on which all of us were sharpened.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from S. Peter, Bishop of Rome: Or, the Roman Episcopate of the Prince of the Apostles Nevertheless, the Catholic tradition that S. Peter was Bishop of Rome is of importance not only from an historical point of view, but also in the province of dogma within the Church, and of controversy with those outside its pale. For, as held by Catholics, in correlation with the succession of the Roman Pontiffs, it is in its theological aspect a great fact intimately bound up with what is of revealed faith viz., the permanent institution by our Lord Jesus Christ of the Primacy in His Church. It forms, indeed, the actual verification in all time of that wondrous promise recorded in the Gospels which our Divine Lord made to S. Peter: Thou art Peter: and upon this rock I will build My Church. 9 Whilst, as regards controversy, it is a matter of vital moment to Protestants; and one which they have ever most strenuously assailed, driven thereto by the very necessity of their position as opponents of the Catholic Faith. Hence, in spite of my general aim, I have found it impossible to avoid treating the subject to a large extent apologetically, and in its theological aspect.
