Download or read book Primordial Characters written by Rodney Needham and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Covers myth, witchcraft, iconography, fiction, dreams, and seeks to find common ground in anthropology, psychology, and history. It calls upon the findings of world ethnography as well as on ideas and experiences familiar to any reflective individual. Rodney Needham demonstrates a method of cultural analysis made possible by the discrimination of primary human characteristics, and he investigates (through a study of the image of the witch) the imaginative tendency to synthesize primary factors into archetypes"--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: Mind-bending sci-fi and Cold War thriller collide in this 6-issue series by the bestselling, Eisner-winning creative team behind GIDEON FALLS! In 1957, the USSR made history by launching a dog named Laika into Earth’s orbit. Two years later, the USA responded with two monkeys, Able and Baker. These animals never returned. But unbeknownst to everyone, they did not die in orbit…they were taken. And now they are coming home. Collects PRIMORDIAL #1-6 Select praise for PRIMORDIAL: “…Ambitious and innovative comics storytelling…” —ComicBook.com “Has plenty to offer to fans of American history, science fiction, and good storytelling.” —Comic Book Resources “All in all, sci-fi fans, LEMIRE fans, SORRENTINO fans, Image fans, this is a must buy.” —Black Nerd Problems “A classic Cold War thriller in the making. But it’s also far more ambitious than that, with a sci-fi storyline at its heart and visuals evoking 2001: A Space Odyssey… Part John le Carré and another part Arthur C. Clarke.” —Comicon.com “For a creative team this brilliant, it really means something to say that they are at the top of their game. But sure enough…some of their best work!” —Monkeys Fighting Robots
Download or read book Auden's O written by Andrew W. Hass and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the rise of the idea of nothing in Western modernity and how its figuration is transforming and offering new possibilities. In this groundbreaking, interdisciplinary history of ideas, Andrew W. Hass explores the ascendency of the concept of nothing into late modernity. He argues that the rise of the reality of nothing in religion, philosophy, and literature has taken place only against the decline of the concept of One: a shift from a sovereign understanding of the One (unity, universality) toward the figure of the Oa cipher figure that, as nonentity, is nevertheless determinant of other realities. The figuring of this O culminates in a proliferation of literary expressions of nothingness, void, and absence from 1940 to 1960, but by centurys end, this movement has shifted from linear progression to mutation, whereby religion, theology, philosophy, literature, and other critical modes of thought, such as feminism, merge into a shared, circular activity. The writer W. H. Auden lends his name to this O, his long poetic work The Sea and the Mirror an exemplary manifestation of its implications. Hass examines this work, along with that of a host of writers, philosophers, and theologians, to trace the revolutionary hermeneutics and creative space of the O, and to provide the reasoning of why nothing is now such a powerful force in the imagination of the twenty-first century, and of how it might move us through and beyond our turbulent times.

When people start going missing, and others are found dead, Sheriff Bill Murphy must identify who—or what—is causing all this trouble before it gets worse. As the mystery evolves, it entangles Sarah Muller, a local high school senior, and she finds herself at the center of the investigation, stalked by a nightmare she couldn’t imagine. As all the players move toward the final discovery, they will be shocked by what they learn: the “legend” is more than it seems and not what any of them imagined.
