Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Pianoforte Playing Simplest, and will require but brief consideration. It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Principles of Pianoforte Playing: Being an Extract From the Author's "the Act of Touch," Designed for School Use, and Including Two New Chapters Directions for Learners and Advice to Teachers This little work is issued to render the teachings of The Act of Touch better available for the School-room and Class room, and as a d104-book for Examinations. It is intended as an Introduction to the subject. The supreme importance of early training in this subject the mechanism of playing - need not be further dilated upon here, since it has been proved that Agility itself, and all those contrasts of Tone and Duration which enable us musically to express ourselves through the Pianoforte, depend immediately on the proper fulfilment of the laws of Touch, the polemics of which have been amply dealt with in The Act of Touch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palmer's Piano Primer: A Systematic and Clear Explanation of the Fundamental Principles of Piano-Forte Playing, Designed for the Assistance of Teachers, and as a Text-Book for Classes or Private Pupils, Containing a Scientific Exposition of the Rudiments of Musical Notation It is recommended that the pupils be required to commit the questions and answers to memory, (a few at each lesson, 5 to 20, according to the capacity for memorizing) and recite them at the beginning of the next lesson; this would, in the course of six or twelve months, place much important information at the pupil's disposal, thereby saving the teacher's valuable time for those things which cannot be learned from books, while the learners would stand on a broader foundation of musical knowledge, with no perceptible interference with the time of lessons; in fact, it would in the end save their time, for, with increased knowledge, they will be able to comprehend the explanations and elucidations of the teacher much more rapidly, thereby insuring greater advancement in the same length of time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you feel receiving piano lessons from a world-renowned and seasoned concert pianist? Indeed, such sessions would be delightfully challenging and insightful ones, as you're inclined to receive all his instructions without question and with full confidence in his expertise and abilities. This is also the attitude that one should adopt when going through Mark Hambourg's This How to Play the Piano. The author himself recommends any piano student to have a "really good and experienced professor" - someone which the famous pianist himself was although he did not insinuate his credentials in this way. He dispenses practical advice regarding the maintenance of one's health as a performer and the decorum one must adopt in performing in public. Hambourg also includes a number of helpful illustrations that the reader can follow easily. He tackles the basics in playing the piano and moves things gradually to the more challenging aspects of performing with such an instrument, such as using the pedal and "making the piano sing." In addition to these, the Russian-British musician also gives tips on selecting and caring for your own piano. Though this volume may be written many decades ago, the principles and tips laid out by its author are still relevant and applicable to the modern piano student, whether young or old, naturally adept or just plain curious. Readers will also get more insights on what it takes to be a committed performer through Hambourg's non-musical advice and be inspired by his words.
