Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Christian Evidence Christian Evidence describes the arguments which are employed in support of Christianity. It should be clearly understood, that, when Christians undertake to meet those who doubt, or resist, the claims which are made on behalf of Christianity, they do not assume that they can remove every difficulty which may be suggested; as that would be an assumption beyond the true modesty of those who remember the limitations of human faculties and the nature of the subject. Neither do they ignore the fact that opposition to the claims of religious truth may proceed from a state of mind which is itself the result of moral causes, and therefore to be chiefly removed by moral and spiritual means. But they address arguments to unbelievers, i.e. to those who demand them; as meeting them on their own ground. And they supply believers with the reasons which support their faith; that they may both believe more firmly, and resist the influence of objectors, whose words are sometimes artfully prepared to shake confidence, even where they cannot overthrow established positions. Particular and fragmentary objections to Christianity are common. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Christian Evidence The original work, which formed the basis of this handbook, was only a compend. The first edition, though quite large, was speedily exhausted. Since it has been out of print, there have been so many calls for it, sometimes in large quantities, that both the publisher and the author feel justified in issuing the present edition. It is cause for hopefulness and for gratitude to God that, even in these days of many departures from the faith, books of an evangelical order are in demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scripture and Its Witnesses: Outlines of Christian Evidence In recent years the study has assumed a more systematic form and taken a more independent position, being treated as a distinct branch of theology and baptized with the name of Apolo getics. The name alone is new, the subject is as old as the Church itself. Dr. Bruce has well pointed out that the Epistle to the Hebrews is of the nature of an apology. The writer of that Epistle was the first in a line of apologists extending to the present day. The second century is distinguished by a school of writers known as the Greek Apologists, who made it their mission to expound the grounds of the Christian faith to the educated classes of the age. The series includes J ustin Martyr (about 150 Quadratus, Aristides, Tatian, Melito (170 ad), Miltiades, Athena goras, Theophilus (180 Many of their works are extant. They are addressed some to the emperor of the day, some to the general public. Many of the arguments used have a modern ring, - evidences of design in nature, miracles and prophecy, the adaptation of the gospel to human nature and need. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The following pages, therefore, will discuss the Christian Evidences in an order modeled upon that which is constantly followed in our legal tribunals. There the examination of the evidence presented consists of two main parts; and the inquiry is made - first, whether the testimony offered is actual testimony in the case under consideration - that is, whether it has any material bearing upon the case, and whether it is true; and, secondly, being mate rial and true, what is its weight? Accord ingly, such is the order followed here. The work is therefore divided into two Parts: The Second Part discusses - The Weight of the Ev idence in favor of the Divinity of Christianity, and presents in its proof: (a) The Superhu man Facts upon which Christianity is founded, as displayed in - l. The Advent of Christ; 2. The Character of Christ; 3. His Teachings; 4. His Prophecies; 5. His Miracles. (b) Its Superhuman Results, in the changes it has wrought in the characters and lives of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Evidence of the New Testament: An Inductive Study in Christian Evidences This treatise is a contribution to the Christian Evidences demanded by the times. It is dedicated to the intelligent young men of the period. The work is designed to meet the skeptical issues of the day which deny the historical character of Christianity during the first three centuries, holding that the claim is not absolutely based upon the facts of Christ's life as is narrated in the four Gospels. No other work known to the writer has proposed to traverse this territory upon the lines and in the form here adopted. It embraces the period between the crucifixion of Christ and the time when Constan tine the Great established Christianity throughout the Roman Empire as the religion of the State in A. D. 325. After this date there is no question made touching the historicity of Christianity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of Christianity Many able writers on the subject give the first and chief place to the historical evidences, and regard the other evidences as merely subsidiary. The historical evidences require for their full development a laborious search into the records and monuments of antiquity. Few men have the opportunity and ability to perform this labor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence of Christianity: Derived From Its Nature and Reception The idea, which the following pages are designed to illustrate, is briefly this: that a religion like the Christian could never have existed, unless it had been introduced by divine authority. It could not have been invented: it would not have been received. This line of argument has at least one advantage; at the same time that it proves, if well founded, that the religion is true, it shows also what the religion is.
