Book excerpt: Comprised exclusively of clinical cases covering complex primary and revision total knee arthroplasty, this concise, practical casebook will provide orthopedic surgeons with the best real-world strategies to properly manage the more complicated forms of knee replacement they may encounter. Each chapter is a case that opens with a unique clinical presentation, followed by a description of the diagnosis, assessment and management techniques used to treat it, as well as the case outcome and clinical pearls and pitfalls. Cases included illustrate different management strategies for primary knee arthroplasty, including the varus and valgus knee, flexion contracture and extra-articular deformity, as well as periprosthetic infection and revision total knee arthroplasty, including deficient extensor mechanism, periprosthetic femur fracture and ligamentous instability. Pragmatic and reader-friendly, Complex Primary and Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Clinical Casebook will be an excellent resource for orthopedic surgeons confronted with a challenging knee joint replacement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compilation of topics related to primary total knee arthroplasty. The chapters cover, in a clear and didactic way, the current themes, written by experts from the area, from different parts of the world. Topics related to the three surgical phases (before surgery, during surgery, and after surgery) are discussed here. This is very important because the surgeon is not a "factory worker." First of all, it is a medicine doctor who has to feel and understand the particularities of each patient. Demographic studies show an aging population. Osteoarthritis and inflammatory diseases are becoming much more prevalent. In addition, a worldwide epidemic of trauma has led to the need for arthroplasties much more frequently. Therefore, total knee arthroplasty will be an increasingly important subject.

Book excerpt: More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.

Book excerpt: This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinematically aligned total knee/total hip arthroplasty, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. The relevance of available and emerging technological tools for these personalized approaches is also explained, with coverage of, for example, robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and augmented reality. Contributions from surgeons who are considered world leaders in diverse fields of this novel surgical philosophy make this open access book will invaluable to a wide readership, from trainees at all levels to consultants practicing lower limb surgery

After an introductory section on the native knee that covers the anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and patterns of disease, all aspects of primary knee arthroplasty are discussed in detail. Individual chapters are devoted to topics such as acute pain management, the role of technological aids, prosthetic kinematics, alignment targets, unicompartmental arthroplasty, patellar resurfacing, outcome measures, and cost-effectiveness. An extensive section explains the causes and management of potential complications, including aseptic failure, infections, and periprosthetic fracture. The surgical techniques appropriate for revision knee arthroplasty are described separately, and guidelines on how to deal with bone loss, instability, and extensor mechanism failure are provided. The authors are all respected experts from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practically applicable guide to the use of revision total knee arthroplasty. Demand for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) continues to rise, with some estimates predicting this to be as high as 400% than it currently is, and this will inevitably lead to increased demand for revision surgery. Furthermore, this is a sub-specialist area of arthroplasty that is complex and challenging with high failure rates, meaning that there is a real need to improve the outcomes of these procedures. Within this book, the chapters focus on a particular subject area focusing on how to successfully perform a procedure in a step-by-step manner in a variety of scenarios from condylar revisions to salvage cases. Topics covered include how to use surgical techniques in instances of periprosthetic distal femur fractures and manage infections where bone loss has been significant. Long-term outcome data is also presented to enable the reader to develop a deep understanding of where a particular strategy might be most effective. Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Practical Guide concisely details how to use the techniques covered in all aspects of revision knee surgery, making it an indispensable resource for all those involved in the care of these patients or who use these techniques in their day-to-day clinical practice.
