How can I make my science teaching successful? How do children learn to investigate scientifically? What are the dos and don’ts of science teaching? Written to support teachers who need to boost their science knowledge, this book covers science knowledge in sufficient breadth and depth to enable you to teach science effectively up to the end of Key Stage 2, as well as the core teaching and learning issues involved in the investigative process. Whether you are a student or a fully qualified teacher, the book is designed to help you find what you need quickly. The introduction provides a guide to how to use the book, including a table which cross references the subject knowledge against the National Curriculum, the QCA Scheme of Work and Primary Science Topics. This enables you to use the book in different ways, depending on your individual requirements. To ensure that teachers will be able to teach and respond to questions appropriately, the authors take science knowledge beyond what is required for Key Stage 2. This is important, as it helps to avoid over-simplifying concepts which can then cause misconceptions at Key Stage 3 and beyond. It also helps to broaden and develop the primary teacher’s own knowledge. Science for Primary School Teachers is a core text for teachers in training, and in professional development into the induction year and beyond.

Book excerpt: For me, there was enormous satisfaction in seeing how Megan Sloan interweaves process, workshop, and traits in this book. I have struggled all my professional life to help teachers see that the 6 traits are not a silver bullet, not even a curriculum, but a way of thinking and talking about writing that enormously empowers revision-and therefore, both process and workshop. It is so gratifying to hear from a teacher who really understands this relationship, and sees how things work in harmony, rather than trying to replace one with the other. Vicki Spandel Author of Creating Young Writers "I want to set up a writing workshop in my classroom-now what?" "What should my teaching look like day to day?" "What about minilessons? Conferences and assessment? Share time?" These are just a few of the many questions about writing workshop that teacher and nationally known staff developer Megan Sloan has been asked. With Into Writing this workshop veteran sets out to answer these and the other most commonly asked questions about teaching writing well. From September to June, Sloan's answers break down the workshop piece by piece so you can make the most of it. She examines the ins and outs of writing workshop through four overarching principles of practice: Differentiate to address each writer's unique needs. Make every minute count by designing instruction that sticks. Share your experiences with students to build trust, encourage choice and community, and model how real writers work. Emphasize writing to support reading. If you're new to writing workshop, Into Writing will be a handy, inspirational guide for implementing and sustaining it. If you want to improve your workshop, you'll have a troubleshooting manual that's easy to use and that's as focused on helping writers reach their potential as you are. Into Writing answers your questions with all the practical savvy, student-sample guideposts, and specific, actionable advice you'd expect from a veteran teacher. And with her warmth and can-do spirit, Megan Sloan will win you over and lead you to teaching that your young writers will find as satisfying as you will.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Teachers' Manual The present work is one of two manuals that have been prepared in collaboration by Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. Smith. The plans for both manuals have followed along similar lines. The introductory pages are made up in the main from the teachers' books in each course. After a short series of General Orders of Service come Special Orders of Service, one only for the Cradle Roll in the manual for teachers of beginners, and two each for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Missions, and Promotion Day. The manual for primary teachers does not contain a special for cradle roll, but has three each for those mentioned above, with an addition of two on temperance and three on missions. All of the music in the teachers quarterly parts has been retained in the same order and numbering as originally published, with much additional music, the shorter pieces being inserted in the text, the rest indicated numerically. The musical selections will be found varied, particularly pleasing, and within the range of children's voices. A few extra pieces of music not included in the Orders of Service will afford opportunity for choice, if desired. The Round Tables and list of Musical and Teachers' Helps have been prepared especially for each of the two manuals. The arrangement of recitations and music need not be literally followed: the several Orders of Service may be easily changed or adapted to any particular occasion; or may form a basis of fresh programs at the option of teachers, with omissions or additions as may be desired. The editor takes pleasure in saying that these manuals are the product of painstaking and conscientious effort on the part of the authors, whose wide experience as practical teachers has given them such appreciation of the needs of their coworkers in the departments as to render the work especially valuable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Work: A Manual for Young Teachers This little book has been written for young Primary teachers, those just entering upon the work of teaching. For them only is it intended. The aim has not been so much to present anything new, as to make the experiences of the older teachers available for the younger ones. If in any small way this purpose is attained, if one teacher is helped even a little, the writer will have had her reward. Apology must be made for the overlapping of the chapters. The one subject, "language work," would include all, for "every lesson may be a language lesson." The divisions, however, were made for convenience. The methods given are not "cut and dried," but are intended to be only suggestive. And, after all, methods count for very little compared with the presence of the living teacher in the schoolroom. It may be necessary to teach many things and in many ways, but what we are will teach over our heads, and nothing acquired will stand our pupils in such stead upon the battlefield of life as the memory of a pure, sincere life once lived in their midst.
