Book excerpt: The University of Pittsburgh first fielded an intercollegiate basketball team in 1905, but an entire generation of fans has only heard or read about a small number of these colorful and outstanding players. An invitation to join the prestigious Big East Conference in 1982 opened the eyes of the nation to Panther basketball. Continuing a tradition of growth and excellence, the 2001-2002 Panthers again put University of Pittsburgh basketball on the map. Picked by the league coaches to finish sixth in the seven-team Big East Conference's West Division, Ben Howland directed the team to an overall record of 29-6, earning the Panthers the West Division regular-season championship. The Panthers then advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in twenty-eight years. Panther Pride: University of Pittsburgh Men's Basketball is the pictorial history of Pittsburgh's basketball program, before and since the Big East Conference. Well before Dr. Roy Chipman, there was eccentric Doc Carlson. Long before All-American Charles Smith, there was Charley Hyatt. Twenty-eight years before Brandin Knight led his team to the Sweet Sixteen, Billy Knight led another remarkable Panther squad to the Elite Eight. From Motor Square Garden in East Liberty to the Pitt Stadium Pavilion and Fitzgerald Field House in Oakland, Pittsburgh basketball teams have provided their fans with exciting victories and heartbreaking defeats for close to a century.

The book alerts its readers to the ways in which gay men and women were treated in our society and how discrimination in each area can be tackled. The book speaks to us all, providing a blueprint for action through the 1980s. While things today might be better, the book is a reminder that the struggle for equal rights was and will continue to be long and cumbersome. The book acknowledges the action and support of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality and will be of interest to students of history, sociology, law, gender studies and sexuality studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Panther Party suffers from a distorted image largely framed by television and print media, including the Panthers' own newspaper. These sources frequently reduced the entire organization to the Bay Area where the Panthers were founded, emphasizing the Panthers' militant rhetoric and actions rather than their community survival programs. This image, however, does not mesh with reality. The Panthers worked tirelessly at improving the life chances of the downtrodden regardless of race, gender, creed, or sexual orientation. In order to chronicle the rich history of the Black Panther Party, this anthology examines local Panther activities throughout the United States—in Seattle, Washington; Kansas City, Missouri; New Orleans, Louisiana; Houston, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; and Detroit, Michigan. This approach features the voices of people who served on the ground—those who kept the offices in order, prepared breakfasts for school children, administered sickle cell anemia tests, set up health clinics, and launched free clothing drives. The essays shed new light on the Black Panther Party, re-evaluating its legacy in American cultural and political history. Just as important, this volume gives voice to those unsung Panthers whose valiant efforts have heretofore gone unnoticed, unheard, or ignored.

Now, Forty years later, these photographs and their story will finally be published. Book excerpt: "Pride of the Panthers" tells the legendary story of Perry High School, which during the decades of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, became the greatest high school basketball dynasty in Georgia History. Its coach, Eric P. Staples, was the winningest high school basketball coach in America. His teams captured a phenomenal 83 percent of their games. This included 25 district/region championships and eight state titles. The year after Coach Staples retired from coaching, his assistant coach for many years, Paul Hartman, elevated to head coach, led his 1966 Perry team to a ninth and unprecedented state championship. The book takes you year-by-year, from the 1933 season through the 1969 season, replete with team rosters, team photos, and team won-loss records. Also included are box scores and reporting commentary for pivotal regular season games and tournament competition. As special addenda to the book, a section has been added for the Perry High girls' basketball teams and another section for the Perry High cheerleaders. The book was authored by Billy Powell, who played on Perry's 1953 state championship team, and who was an eyewitness to the Perry teams that played from the early 1940s through the late1960s. Powell has published four books on Amazon.com. United States Senator Sam Nunn, who grew up with Powell in Perry and was an "all-state" basketball player, wrote the foreword to the book. Perry, Georgia, was a basketball town, whose citizens took great pride in its winning teams and followed their play throughout the state. Senator Sam Nunn wrote, "If you liked the movie 'Hoosiers' and enjoy high school basketball, this book is for you."
