Book Synopsis Epidemic Malaria and Hunger in Colonial Punjab by : Sheila Zurbrigg
Download or read book Epidemic Malaria and Hunger in Colonial Punjab written by Sheila Zurbrigg and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the primary role of acute hunger (semi- and frank starvation) in the ‘fulminant’ malaria epidemics that repeatedly afflicted the northwest plains of British India through the first half of colonial rule. Using Punjab vital registration data and regression analysis it also tracks the marked decline in annual malaria mortality after 1908 with the control of famine, despite continuing post-monsoonal malaria transmission across the province. The study establishes a time-series of annual malaria mortality estimates for each of the 23 plains districts of colonial Punjab province between 1868 and 1947 and for the early post-Independence years (1948-60) in (East) Punjab State. It goes on to investigate the political imperatives motivating malaria policy shifts on the part of the British Raj. This work reclaims the role of hunger in Punjab malaria mortality history and, in turn, raises larger epistemic questions regarding the adequacy of modern concepts of nutrition and epidemic causation in historical and demographic analysis. Part of The Social History of Health and Medicine in South Asia series, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of colonial history, modern history, social medicine, social anthropology and public health.

Book Synopsis The Economies of Africa and Asia in the Inter-war Depression (Routledge Revivals) by : Ian Brown
Download or read book The Economies of Africa and Asia in the Inter-war Depression (Routledge Revivals) written by Ian Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great inter-war depression has long been seen as an unprecedented economic disaster for the peoples of the non-European world. This book, with its detailed assessment of the impact of the depression on the economies of Africa and Asia, challenges the orthodox view, and is essential reading for those with a teaching or research interest in the modern economic history of those continents. Established specialists in the modern economic history of parts of Africa or Asia put forward a number of revisionist arguments. They show that some economies were left essentially unscathed by the depression, and that for many export-dependent peasant communities which did face a severe drop in cash income as world commodity prices collapsed from the late 1920s, there was a range of important responses and reactions by which they could defend their economic welfare. For many peasant communities the depression was not a disaster but an opportunity.

Book Synopsis Trade, Tariffs, and Empire by : Basudev Chatterji
Download or read book Trade, Tariffs, and Empire written by Basudev Chatterji and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the end of the First World War and the outbreak of the Second was one of major disturbances in the international economy. These resulted in important changes in Britain and India, and in their relationship. This book analyses the extent and quality of changes within the economic aspects of British imperialism in India, and explores the calculations and compulsions that went into the making of economic policy in London and Delhi between 1919 and 1939. The main focus is on the Lancashire textile industry, the decline of whose India trade during this period was of both absolute and symbolic significance in the history of Indo-British relations. The affairs of Lancashire are studied within the broader context of the decline and eventual collapse of the pre-1914 international economic order; the influence of British industrial and financial interests; and the imperatives arising out of massive unemployment in Britain. At the same time, policy-making in India is examined in the context of nationalism; the threats posed to the Raj by growing political activity; the economic interests and political attitudes of businessmen; and the priorities of the Government of India. Situated within this comprehensive context, the story of Lancashire provides a useful medium of analysis for the larger themes of economic and political change, and their relative importance in the reshaping of Britain's imperial system. Drawing on a wealth of private and official sources, this book provides fresh insights into the purposes and strategies of the Raj in its penultimate phase. It criticizes and complements current historiography on British imperialism in India, as well as on the process of decolonization.
