Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-standing unsolved problem in economic theory is how economic equilibria are attained. Price Dynamics in Equilibrium Models: The Search for Equilibrium and the Emergence of Endogenous Fluctuations considers a number of adjustment processes in different economic models and investigates their dynamical behaviour. Two important themes arising in this context are `bounded rationality' and `nonlinear dynamics'. Important sub-themes of the book are the following: how do boundedly rational agents interact with their environment and does this interaction in some sense lead to rational outcomes (which may or may not correspond to equilibria)? The second sub-theme deals with the consequences of the nonlinear dynamical nature of many adjustment processes. The results presented in this volume indicate that endogenous fluctuations are the rule rather than the exception in the search for equilibrium. The book uses the theory of nonlinear dynamics to analyze the dynamics of the different economic models. Due to the complexity of most of the models, an important role is played by computational methods. In particular, at regular instances the models are analyzed by numerical simulations and some computer-assisted proofs are provided. It also covers a wide range of dynamical models from economic theory. Most of these models merge the theory of nonlinear economic dynamics with the theory of bounded rationality. The book is written for anyone with an interest in economic theory in general and bounded rationality and endogenous fluctuations in particular. It is entirely self-contained and accessible to readers with only a limited knowledge of economic theory.

Top trader Michael C. Thomsett explains why candlesticks complement traditional resistance/support-based analyses rather than contradicting or competing with them. One step at a time, you'll learn how to use them together to identify crucial reversal and confirmation signals more rapidly and reliably. Thomsett reviews how traditional and candlestick methods each identify patterns indicating future stock behavior, and reversal, and shows how to use each system to gain cross-confirmation and strengthen the reliability of your predictions. Profiting from Technical Analysis and Candlestick Indicators showshow to uncover reversal signals in both systems; how to use candlesticks and well-known technical signals to forecast pricing; how to recognize signal failures and false leads; how to profit from Western and Eastern indicators in swing trading; and how to use them together to reduce risk.

Book excerpt: The compendium of papers in this volume focuses on aspects of economic uncertainty, financial instabilities and asset bubbles.Economic uncertainty is modeled in continuous time using the mathematical techniques of stochastic calculus. A detailed treatment of important topics is provided, including the existence and uniqueness of asymptotic economic growth, the modeling of inflation and interest rates, the decomposition of inflation and its volatility, and the extension of the quantity theory of money to allow for randomness. The reader is also introduced to the methods of chaotic dynamics, and this methodology is applied to asset pricing, the European equity markets, and the multi-fractality in foreign currency markets.Since the techniques of stochastic calculus and chaotic dynamics do not readily accommodate the presence of stochastic bubbles, several papers discuss in depth the presence of financial bubbles in asset prices, and econometric work is performed to link such bubbles to monetary policy. Finally, since bubbles often burst rather than deflate slowly, the last section of the book studies the crash of October 1987 as well as other crashes of national equity markets due to the Persian gulf crisis.

Book excerpt: 'The global oil industry is an exceptionally complex one, and its importance to governments, business and society as a whole is immense...The New Economy of Oil aims to set out the challenges and choices ahead, and it makes a fascinating read.' Business News 'John Mitchell, in this excellent book, is looking at the new elements which may influence, or indeed determine, the shape of the oil industry, the behaviour of the main actors, the forces of supply and demand, and the price path.' From the Foreword by Robert Mabro, Director, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies 'The New Economy of Oil is a superior, state-of-the-art tour of a conventional scenario about the near future of the world's oil and oil economy and polity.' Society and Natural Resources In a world where international accountability is increasingly important, the oil industry faces an unprecedented series of challenges. Mitchell's main theme is that the acceptability of oil is becoming more important than its availability. The implications are enormous, given the huge current dependence on oil of so much industry and government revenue. This book is of importance to all those involved with oil - from industry professionals to competitors, commentators, investors, managers, politicians and regulators.
