Book Synopsis Asbestos and its Diseases by : John E. Craighead
Download or read book Asbestos and its Diseases written by John E. Craighead and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although asbestos was once considered a miracle mineral, today even the word itself has ominous implications for all strata of our society. Incorporated in the past into over 3000 different industrial and consumer products, as well as in building materials and military equipment, opportunities for exposure continue to be ever present in our environment. Of all of us who are potentially exposed, blue collar workers are at greatest risk. Countless thousands of workers and servicemen in a wide variety of trades were disabled or have died consequent to the health effects of asbestos, and many more can be expected to be affected in years to come. Litigation continues, and financial awards in the billions have bankrupt many Fortune 500 companies and numerous smaller companies. While one might implicate our forefathers in this widespread, relentless medical catastrophe, it has been only in recent decades that science has appreciated the complexities of the problem and the long latencies before the asbestos-associated diseases appear clinically. After all these years, prevention remains the hallmark of disease control, as modern treatments remain, to a large extent, futile.

Book Synopsis Lives Are Reduced Every Day When Under Asbestos by : Rudiyant
Download or read book Lives Are Reduced Every Day When Under Asbestos written by Rudiyant and published by Lembar Langit Indonesia. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asbestos exposure can lead to various types of cancer, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and stomach cancer. Asbestos is classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Asbestos fibers are extremely small and can be inhaled into the lungs. These fibers are highly resistant to degradation and remain in the body for years, causing continuous damage and inflammation. Asbestos can also cause asbestosis, a lung disease characterized by scarring of the lung tissue. Symptoms of this disease include shortness of breath, persistent cough, and fatigue. Asbestosis has no effective cure and can be fatal. Exposure to asbestos can also result in mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the protective lining of organs such as the chest cavity (pleural mesothelioma) or the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). Mesothelioma is a rare but highly aggressive form of cancer. The use of asbestos in building materials, such as roofing, walls, and pipes, can lead to environmental contamination. When asbestos-containing materials degrade or become damaged, asbestos fibers can be released and inhaled by humans or animals, posing serious health risks. Many countries have banned the use of asbestos or tightly regulated its use. This is done to protect the public from the dangers of asbestos exposure and to prevent asbestos-related diseases. Download or read book Environmental Medicine written by Committee on Curriculum Development in Environmental Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-05-12 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are increasingly concerned about potential environmental health hazards and often ask their physicians questions such as: "Is the tap water safe to drink?" "Is it safe to live near power lines?" Unfortunately, physicians often lack the information and training related to environmental health risks needed to answer such questions. This book discusses six competency based learning objectives for all medical school students, discusses the relevance of environmental health to specific courses and clerkships, and demonstrates how to integrate environmental health into the curriculum through published case studies, some of which are included in one of the book's three appendices. Also included is a guide on where to obtain additional information for treatment, referral, and follow-up for diseases with possible environmental and/or occupational origins.
