Book excerpt: Drum and Bugle Corps (drum corps) is an evolving and physically demanding activity that has grown in recognition over the years. Drum corps is considered a performing art as a musical marching unit consisting of brass, percussion, and colorguard sections. There are limited studies available regarding the health of marching artists, particularly those involved in drum corps. Specifically, the burden of musculoskeletal injury (MSI) in drum corps is currently unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of MSI in a single drum corps participating at the World Class level in the Drum Corps International (DCI) competition circuit during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Book excerpt: The Musician’s Hand – A Clinical Guide was the first book to focus on the specialised topic of the upper limb and hand in musicians: the conditions they suffer, the modified assessment and treatment they require and the importance of prevention. Since its publication in 1998, scientific and clinical progress has been made in all these areas. The second edition of The Musician’s Hand has been completely revised under the editorship of hand surgeon Ian Winspur to reflect this expansion in our knowledge. The book opens with introductory chapters describing the principles of hand and arm pain as it is experienced by musicians, and summarising the problems associated with playing various instruments (woodwind, violin, piano, etc). Subsequent chapters cover the specific disorders seen in musicians, (Dupuytren’s, nerve compression syndromes, etc) describing the therapeutic solutions to each one and highlighting the key prevention strategies available. Closing chapters focus on related topics such as performance psychology and pharmacotherapy. Featuring contributions from world renowned performers such as Imogen Cooper and global experts in the field, The Musician’s Hand, Second Edition provides essential insight to upper limb problems in musicians, not only for surgeons, doctors and therapists, but for all students and teachers of performing arts medicine and to musicians themselves.

Book excerpt: Performing Arts Medicine (PAM) is a growing area of specialization within the performing arts field, which addresses the multi-faceted health and wellness of performing artists. This sub-discipline within performing arts is interdisciplinary in nature, involving the expertise of performing arts educators and researchers, physicians and other health professionals. This first of its kind text appeals to a very wide audience that includes performing arts clinical practitioners and health science researchers as well as performing arts pedagogues and performing arts students. The first part of the text gives the reader an overview of the field and discusses over-arching themes and issues in PAM. Part two presents an array of music and dance research involving primarily case studies that address significant issues of concern for performing artists and have implications for pedagogical practice. Part three provides research-based perspectives derived from professionals sharing their in-practice experiences. Finally, part four describes useful PAM models of implementation supporting the needs of performing artists in different settings. Written by experts in the field, Perspectives in Performing Arts Medicine Practice is a valuable resource for performing arts physicians, educators and researchers.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Brad Parks delivers a tense novel of thrills, twists, and deceit that grabs you and won’t let go until the final, satisfying page. Tommy Jump is an out-of-work stage actor approached by the FBI with the role of a lifetime: Go undercover at a federal prison, impersonate a convicted felon, and befriend a fellow inmate, a disgraced banker named Mitchell Dupree, who knows the location of documents that can be used to bring down a ruthless drug cartel . . . if only he’d tell the FBI where they are. The women in Tommy’s life, his fiancée and mother, tell him he’s crazy to even consider taking the part. The cartel has quickly risen to become the largest supplier of crystal meth in America. And it hasn’t done it by playing nice. Still, Tommy’s acting career has stalled, and the FBI is offering a minimum of $150,000 for a six-month gig—whether he gets the documents or not. Using a false name and backstory, Tommy enters the low-security prison and begins the process of befriending Dupree. But Tommy soon realizes he’s underestimated the enormity of his task and the terrifying reach of the cartel. The FBI aren't the only ones looking for the documents, and if Tommy doesn’t play his role to perfection, it just may be his last act.
