Book Synopsis Law Enforcement Media Relations by : California Peace Officers' Association. Police Community Relations Committee
Download or read book Law Enforcement Media Relations written by California Peace Officers' Association. Police Community Relations Committee and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this publication is to assist law enforcement to recognize and understand the needs and requirements of the media and to help the media understand the methods, policies, and constraints governing law enforcement. Often, without this mutual understanding, conflict arises between the right of the press to obtain information for dissemination to the public and the agency's responsibility to protect an investigation or the victim of a crime. As much as possible, clear-cut policies and procedures must be established and reduced to writing by the law enforcement agencies. These policies should be established in cooperation with the media, and should cover unusual, as well as routine, occurrences. The policies should establish lines of communication between both professions, and include what will be released, when certain releases are to be made and who is to release it. While law enforcement shares the responsibility for the initial notification of the media of newsworthy events, the media must be responsible for creating any pooling method through which law enforcement makes those notifications. This method must be convenient to law enforcement and expeditious to the media. Training is probably the most effective means of communicating the necessity for mutual cooperation, and is the responsibility of both the media and law enforcement. Because so much of the contact between the media and law enforcement is at the line level, the beat reporter and field officer must have a clear understanding of the others' requirements and constraints. Without this understanding, no amount of liaison between managers will overcome the friction that frequently develops at the "working level." The information in this manual was developed by representatives of the news media and law enforcement. It is divided into several major topic areas. The most important of these is the establishment of a written law enforcement-media policy. By adopting this policy individual agencies create their direction, attitude, and philosophy in this area. This is important because it influences the relationship the agency enjoys with the public and the news media. These relationships oftentime determine law enforcement effectiveness.

Book Synopsis Private Management and Public Policy by : James Post
Download or read book Private Management and Public Policy written by James Post and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Management and Public Policy is a landmark work at the intersection of business and society. First published in 1975, it focuses on the management processes that companies use to respond to social issues. The text develops the "principle of public responsibility" as an alternative to the notion that firms have unlimited accountability. And, it presents one of the first systems-based approaches to corporate responsibility, providing theoretical support for business involvement in public policy. Arguably, the book's major contribution is its broad outline of an alternative theory of the firm in society—one that offers the possibility of overcoming traditional public and private dichotomies.

It is an essential guide, both for students and teachers of media and communication studies, and for all those involved in the production and consumption of the media. The new edition has been substantially revised to bring it right up-to-date with developments in the media industry, new media technologies and changes in the political and academic debates surrounding media policy. In this new edition, the authors consider: * whether we are on the threshold of a new communications revolution * the role of global media empires * the rise of video, cable and satellite * the global information society and contradictions in media policy * the BBC and broadcasting at the end of the 1990s * the evolving relationship of the press and the Conservative party. Assessing the press and broadcasting at a time of radical change, the authors suggest a manifesto for media reform.

Book Synopsis The Responsibility of Intellectuals by : Noam Chomsky
Download or read book The Responsibility of Intellectuals written by Noam Chomsky and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Newsweek as one of “14 nonfiction books you’ll want to read this fall” Fifty years after it first appeared, one of Noam Chomsky’s greatest essays will be published for the first time as a timely stand-alone book, with a new preface by the author As a nineteen-year-old undergraduate in 1947, Noam Chomsky was deeply affected by articles about the responsibility of intellectuals written by Dwight Macdonald, an editor of Partisan Review and then of Politics. Twenty years later, as the Vietnam War was escalating, Chomsky turned to the question himself, noting that "intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments" and to analyze their "often hidden intentions." Originally published in the New York Review of Books, Chomsky's essay eviscerated the "hypocritical moralism of the past" (such as when Woodrow Wilson set out to teach Latin Americans "the art of good government") and exposed the shameful policies in Vietnam and the role of intellectuals in justifying it. Also included in this volume is the brilliant "The Responsibility of Intellectuals Redux," written on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, which makes the case for using privilege to challenge the state. As relevant now as it was in 1967, The Responsibility of Intellectuals reminds us that "privilege yields opportunity and opportunity confers responsibilities." All of us have choices, even in desperate times.
