Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presidents and Place: America's Favorite Sons highlights the interrelationship between America's leading political icons and various facets of space and place, including places of birth and death as well as regional allegiances, among others. The chapters examine the legacy of relationships between presidents and place in a variety of social and cultural forms, ranging from famous political campaigns to television series to developments in tourism. Beginning with the political iconography of New York's Federal Hall in early eighteenth-century America and ending with a focus on the Republican Party's electoral relationship with the South, the interdisciplinary and methodologically diverse nature of the chapters reveals that place has more than a biographical significance in relation to US presidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In such popular television series as The West Wing and 24, in thrillers like Tom Clancy’s novels, and in recent films, plays, graphic novels, and internet cartoons, America has been led by an amazing variety of chief executives. Some of these are real presidents who have been fictionally reimagined. Others are “might-have-beens” like Philip Roth’s President Charles Lindbergh. Many more have never existed except in some storyteller’s mind. In The Presidents We Imagine, Jeff Smith examines the presidency’s ever-changing place in the American imagination. Ranging across different media and analyzing works of many kinds, some familiar and some never before studied, he explores the evolution of presidential fictions, their central themes, the impact on them of new and emerging media, and their largely unexamined role in the nation’s real politics. Smith traces fictions of the presidency from the plays and polemics of the eighteenth century—when the new office was born in what Alexander Hamilton called “the regions of fiction”—to the digital products of the twenty-first century, with their seemingly limitless user-defined ways of imagining the world’s most important political figure. Students of American culture and politics, as well as readers interested in political fiction and film, will find here a colorful, indispensable guide to the many surprising ways Americans have been “representing” presidents even as those presidents have represented them. “Especially timely in an era when media image-mongering increasingly shapes presidential politics.”—Paul S. Boyer, series editor “Smith's understanding of the sociopolitical realities of US history is impressive; likewise his interpretations of works of literature and popular culture. . . .In addition to presenting thoughtful analysis, the book is also fun. Readers will enjoy encounters with, for example, The Beggar's Opera, Duck Soup, Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward, Philip Roth's Plot against America, the comedic campaigns of W. C. Fields for President and Pogo for President, and presidential fictions that continue up to the last President Bush. . . . His writing is fluid and conversational, but every page reveals deep understanding and focus. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers.”—CHOICE

Book excerpt: A bold new history of the American presidency, arguing that the successful presidents of the past created unrealistic expectations for every president since JFK, with enormously problematic implications for American politics In The Impossible Presidency, celebrated historian Jeremi Suri charts the rise and fall of the American presidency, from the limited role envisaged by the Founding Fathers to its current status as the most powerful job in the world. He argues that the presidency is a victim of its own success-the vastness of the job makes it almost impossible to fulfill the expectations placed upon it. As managers of the world's largest economy and military, contemporary presidents must react to a truly globalized world in a twenty-four-hour news cycle. There is little room left for bold vision. Suri traces America's disenchantment with our recent presidents to the inevitable mismatch between presidential promises and the structural limitations of the office. A masterful reassessment of presidential history, this book is essential reading for anyone trying to understand America's fraught political climate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining the Chief Executive via flash powder and selfie sticks Lincoln’s somber portraits. Lyndon Johnson’s swearing in. George W. Bush’s reaction to learning about the 9/11 attacks. Photography plays an indelible role in how we remember and define American presidents. Throughout history, presidents have actively participated in all aspects of photography, not only by sitting for photos but by taking and consuming them. Cara A. Finnegan ventures from a newly-discovered daguerreotype of John Quincy Adams to Barack Obama’s selfies to tell the stories of how presidents have participated in the medium’s transformative moments. As she shows, technological developments not only changed photography, but introduced new visual values that influence how we judge an image. At the same time, presidential photographs—as representations of leaders who symbolized the nation—sparked public debate on these values and their implications. An original journey through political history, Photographic Presidents reveals the intertwined evolution of an American institution and a medium that continues to define it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've been obsessed with all things presidents since sixth grade when my grandparents gave me two picture books to study for an Academic Games Presidents competition. My collection of presidential items has since grown to include campaign buttons, Mount Rushmore socks, Lincoln bandages, and of course dozens of presidential biographies. These books range from the small ones that sparked my interest to the thickest monstrosities. Over the years, I've spent thousands of hours studying this mini library to compete at the same Presidents competitions. Although a five-time local champion, I've come in second place four times at the national tournament. Each year, I enter the competition hall with the highest ambitions only to have them pulverized by the time the doors reopen. I admit that I sound a little dramatic and perhaps somewhat whiny, but I do try to stay positive. "At least second is better than third," I continually remind myself. "I guess I could've done worse." The problem is: I've never done better. I've tried harder, voraciously reading new material, adding to the stacks of books that litter my bedroom floor. However, nothing has worked. I realized that instead of amassing as much literature as possible, I should find a concise resource that included the type of trivia that frequently appears at these competitions. When I got to high school, my quest for the perfect presidents book hit an impasse when I discovered that no decent one exists for teenagers. One must choose a paltry fifty-pager meant for a child or an 800-page titan that covers a single president. With one year left to compete, I'm committed to helping some other "Matthew" and inspiring future teens to be excited about U.S. Presidents. So, I am self-publishing my own U.S. Presidents trivia book that attempts to engage high schoolers with easily understandable writing and a sprinkle of sass. I've grown to place myself in the history that I've read. I've learned much from these flawed men's successes and failures, and I hope to bring them to life in my book. I've thoroughly crosschecked as much of my writing as possible to never slander my friends from the past, and I've continued to marvel at their stories passed down through the years, using them as inspiration to leave something of my own for future Academic Gamers to enjoy. Though I cannot promise that my book will give competitors all the answers they need to win Presidents, I think it will at least put them in the running, and even if they end up as a runner-up, "At least second is better than third."
