Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Genetics This book gives the substance of a series of lectures delivered in Yale University, where I had the privilege of holding the office of Silliman Lecturer in 1907. The delay in publication was brought about by a variety of causes. Inasmuch as the purpose of the lectures is to discuss some of the wider problems of biology in the light of knowledge acquired by Mendelian methods of analysis, it was essential that a fairly full account of the conclusions established by them should first be undertaken and I therefore postponed the present work till a book on Mendel's Principles had been completed. On attempting a more general discussion Of the bearing Of the phenomena on the theory of Evolution, I found myself continually hindered by the consciousness that such treatment is premature, and by doubt whether it were not better that the debate should for the present stand indefinitely adjourned. That species have come into existence by an evolutionary process no one seriously doubts; but few who are familiar with the facts that genetic research has revealed are now inclined to speculate as to the manner by which the process has been ac complished. Our knowledge of the nature and properties Of living things is far too meagre to justify any such attempts. Suggestions of course can be made: though, however, these ideas may have a stimulating value in the lecture room, they look weak and thin when set out in print. The work which may one day give them a body has yet to be done. The development of negations is always an ungrateful task apt to be postponed for the positive business of experiment. Such work is happily now going forward in most of the centers of scientific life. Of many of the subjects here treated we already know more than we did in 1907. The delay in production has made it possible to incorporate these new contributions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics The one-man textbook is only too often written to emphasize the author's pet theories and is likely to be unduly biased. The present work is completely non-partisan. It consists Of the writ ings Of many authors and presents many diverse theories. The student is left to balance the various views one against another and to form his own judgment. It is very unfortunate, but none the less true, that even in these scientific days, the subject of evolution has a bad name in many communities and in many educational institutions with religious affiliations. The mistake is made of supposing that evolution and religion are diametrically opposed. The present writer has been at some pains to make it clear that evolution and religion are strictly compatible. We teachers of evolution in the colleges have no Sinister designs upon the religious faith Of our students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetics: An Introduction to the Study of Heredity The following pages had their origin in a course of lectures upon Heredity, given at Brown University during the winter of 1911 - 1912, which were amplified and repeated in part the following summer at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, before the biological summer school of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. An attempt has been made to summarize for the intelligent, but uninitiated, reader some of the more recent phases of the questions of heredity which are at present agitating the biological world. It is hoped that this summary will not only be of interest to the general reader, but that it will also be of service in college courses dealing with evolution and heredity. The subject of heredity concerns every one, but many of those who wish to become better informed regarding it are either too busily engaged or lack the opportunity to study the matter out for themselves. The recent literature in this field is already very large, with every indication that much more is about to follow, which is a further discouragement to non technical readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Heredity That the fundamental aspects Of heredity should have turned out to be so extraordinarily simple supports us in the hope that nature may, after all, be entirely approach able. Her much-advertised inscrutability has once more been found to be an illusion due to our ignorance. This is encouraging, for, if the world in which we live were as complicated as some Of our friends would have us believe we might well despair that biology could ever become an exact science. Personally I have no sympathy with the statement that the problem of the method of evolution is one which the biologist finds it impossible to leave alone, although the longer he works at it, the farther its solution fades into the distance. On the contrary, the evidence of recent years and the methods by means Of which this evidence is Obtained have already in a reasonably short time brought us nearer to a solution Of some Of the import ant problems Of evolution than seemed possible only a few years ago. That new problems and developments have arisen in the course of the work - as they are bound to do in any progressive science, as they do in chemistry and in physics for example - goes without saying, but only a spirit of Obscurantism could pretend that progress of this kind means that we see the solution of our problem fading away into the distance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics The central problem of evolution is still the nature and causes of variation, while the practical problems of eugenics centre about heredity. Variation in past ages has already endowed the human race with an almost infinite variety of types and characters, many of the latter alternative in their inheritance. We have only to compare those we know best with their relatives and ancestors to realise how minute are the resemblances and differences which may be handed on to descendants and collateral lines. These are, no doubt, chiefly a matter of biological inheritance, though similarity of environment may play a' part in certain cases. Probably in no other species of animal or plant does the number of differences between individuals approach the number to be Observed in man. This is to be expected, because of the mental and physical complexity of the human organism; but it does not imply greater intrinsic variability than in other animals or plants. Book excerpt: Bonduriansky and Day challenge the premise that genes alone mediate the transmission of biological information across generations and provide the raw material for natural selection. They explore the latest research showing that what happens during our lifetimes—and even our parents’ and grandparents’ lifetimes—can influence the features of our descendants. Based on this evidence, Bonduriansky and Day develop an extended concept of heredity that upends ideas about how traits can and cannot be transmitted across generations, opening the door to a new understanding of inheritance, evolution, and even human health. --Adapted from publisher description.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity, Evolution, and Vitalism: Some of the Discoveries of Modern Research Into These Matters Their Trend and Significance The laws of heredity and evolution have made the world of life what it now is, and determine what it may yet be. Of recent years we have learned to understand these laws better, and our knowledge of them has become both of deep theoretic interest, and of great practical importance. The author accordingly believes that all thoughtful men should have some knowledge of the latest researches of science in these fields, and some acquaintance with the various problems they solve or suggest, and he has endeavoured in the following pages to give a fair summary of what we now know concerning embryonic growth, parental inheritance, and evolutionary change. His endeavour has been to expound scientific facts, and also to indicate certain novel conclusions to which they seem to lead - conclusions which so far appear to have escaped notice, and which are nevertheless of the greatest philosophic and theologic importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics This book has been prepared to meet a specific demand, long felt here and elsewhere, for an account of the various phases of evolutionary biology condensed within the scope of one volume of moderate size. The present writer has now for sixteen successive years presented in lecture form to large classes of students the subjects of evolution, genetics, and eugenics. Never have we been able to find a single book that would cover the required ground. In fact it has been necessary to require, or at least to recommend, as many as three books. It is believed that the present book will furnish adequate reading material for a major or a semester course in evolutionary biology. Some supplementary reading may be necessary in case an instructor wishes to emphasize one or more phases of the subject; but for a first course in the subject we believe that all of the essential reading material will be found within the text itself. An effort has been made to present the subject in the best pedagogical order. After a general introduction, a rather long chapter appears in which the whole history of the development of evolutionary science is outlined, together with the names and contributions of the leading evolutionists. Part II is a presentation of the evidences of organic evolution, beginning with the bodies of evidence most definite and direct, and ending with the less definite and more controversial. Part III deals with causo-mechanical theories of evolution with Darwinism as the central topic. Part IV concerns itself with genetics or modern experimental evolution, and Part with eugenics, or genetics as applied to human improvement. The book consists largely of excerpts, some long and some short, from both the older classical evolutionary writers and the modern writers. Our aim has been to select the most significant or characteristic passages from each author. In most cases this ideal has been attained, but it has sometimes happened that we have had to make our selection of material to meet a real need hi the book, and accordingly have selected from an author a passage he himself might not consider particularly characteristic of his work. We have succeeded, nevertheless, in welding together out of a collection of isolated chapters and passages what seems to us to be a close approach to a coherent unit. Unification has been accomplished by the aid of editorial connecting passages, introductory statements, criticisms, and summaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Theory of Evolution: Evolution and Genetics I wish to acknowledge the inspiration of Dr. Dwight E. Minnich, who first encouraged me to undertake teaching a Course in evolution, and of the many students whose interest has made this particular course such a pleasure to teach. The comments and suggestions of my colleagues, at the University of Minnesota, James C. Underhill, Joseph G. Gall, John W. Hall, and Frank G. Nordlie, have been most helpful, but I, of course, am solely responsible for the final form of the book. In a work of this sort, covering as it does subjects ranging from the origin of life to cultural anthropology, choices must be made in matters of emphasis and interpretation. It is hoped that the net result is a reasonably balanced account of current thought on evolution. My collaboration with Mrs. Olivia Jensen Ingersoll, whose imaginative drawings illustrate the. Book, of necessity was carried on at long range since her home is in Ohio. However, her competence, both as an illustrator and as a zoologist, greatly eased the problems involved. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the devoted assistance of my wife, Jessie, who assumed the onerous task of typing the manuscript. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Upon Heredity: And Kindred Biological Problems Hence the reader must not take the individual essays as the full and complete expression of my present opinion; but they must rather be looked upon as stages in research, as steps towards a more perfect knowledge. I must therefore express the hope that the essays may be read in the same order as that in which they appeared, and in which they are arranged in the present volume. The reader will then follow the same road which I traversed in the development of the views here set forth; and even though he may be now and then led away from the direct route, perhaps such deviations may not be without interest. I should wish to express my warm thanks to Mr. Poulton for the great trouble he has taken in editing the translation, which in many places presented exceptional difficulties. The greater part of the text I have looked through in proof, and I believe that it well expresses the sense of the original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetics This book is an attempt to present the fundamental fea tures Of Genetics: those features of which every educated person Should have knowledge. Resemblances and differences among organisms are due largely to diversities in the ma ferials with which the different individuals begin life. This fact forms the guiding principle in the presentation here given. The distinction commonly made between heredity and the mechanism Of heredity is therefore abandoned; such a distinction is out of date. Only through knowledge of the materials on which heredity depends, and an understanding of their methods Of operation, is it possible to understand the course taken by heredity and variation, so that study of these matters forms the groundwork of Genetics. This groundwork involves detailed facts and relations that must be thoroughly grasped; these are presented so far as possible in sharply defined form; they are in many cases condensed into formal numbered propositions. In the chapters dealing with more general relations, and based on the earlier chapters, the material is presented in the more usual form Of continuous discourse. References to sources are collected into notes at the ends of the chapters. For the better known matters, already gathered into books or mono graphs, reference is made to such collective accounts, from which the original sources can be traced if desired. For more recent knowledge, not yet unified, references are given to original papers; such are more common in the later chapters.
