The Longevity Prescription outlines eight essential facets of longevity: exercise, nutrition, mental vitality, sleep, relaxation, love and intimacy, community connections, and medical care. Based on proven discoveries, the strategies in each of these areas stretch the proceeds of the "three-decade dividend," while delaying or eliminating chronic illness. With step-by-step guidance for formulating an action plan and adopting new habits and strategies, The Longevity Prescription also guides readers through special challenges, such as diabetes and cancer. A baby boomer turns sixty every 7.6 seconds, but many of America's graying millions approach the later years of life with fear and trepidation. Emphasizing clear-cut research findings that balance physical health with emotional well-being, Butler and his colleagues offer a definitive path to whole-life happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're all interested in living a long life, but few of us are willing to sacrifice everything to attain that longevity. After all, what good is living an additional decade at the expense of enjoying the previous ones? In this remarkable book, Dr. Zorba Paster -- host of the public radio show Zorba Paster On Your Health -- takes a detour from the traditional negative, abstinent approach that addresses only physical factors. Instead, Dr. Zorba introduces us to the five "spheres of wellness" that encompass all aspects of life: the physical, of course, but also the mental, kinship/social, spiritual, and material spheres. He reveals well-documented research that indicates that you must address and balance all of these areas, and not just the physical, to achieve optimal longevity -- and also your greatest enjoyment of that longevity. Within each sphere, Dr. Zorba pinpoints the most threatening "busters" -- those lifestyle aspects that will, sooner or later, kill you. And for each buster, he recommends the most advantageous "boosters" -- habits that will counteract the buster and extend your life. Many of these boosters will come as a complete surprise. For example, even the most diet-conscious, performance-oriented athlete may be at risk for heart disease and stroke by ignoring all the other spheres: mentally, with chronic depression; socially, with limited, distant relationships; spiritually, with an uncaring attitude; and materially, with an unsatisfying, underappre-ciated job. To tailor this remarkable booster-and-buster system to you, The Longevity Code includes in-depth exercises to isolate your most urgent needs. Once you've identified the busters you must overcome, you canclip out the booster cards -- summaries of each of the 76 boosters -- to help you focus on your personal prescription for living a longer, sweeter life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fountain of youth is closer than you think, but finding it requires discipline. Jairo A. Puentes, MD, teams up with his wife, Clara I. Puentes, to share a blueprint to looking and feeling younger in this guide to revitalizing health. Using the acronym DRESS-SS, they focus on seven key areas: diet, rest, exercise, stress management, sleep, sexuality, and spirituality. The authors highlight recent research that reveals how to select proper nutrients and supplements for better health as well as how to fix hormonal imbalances that occur as we age. Using vitamins, supplements, and herbs as part of complementary medicine, you’ll be able to reverse the aging process and live a longer and happier life. The book also explores the effect of free radicals on DNA as a leading cause in the development of cancer as well as how doctors and health practitioners can help patients improve their quality of life. In a genre crowded with often contradictory and confusing advice, Living Longer and Reversing Aging is a comprehensive guide to health and longevity.

This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 25 years, life expectancy at age 50 in the United States has been rising, but at a slower pace than in many other high-income countries, such as Japan and Australia. This difference is particularly notable given that the United States spends more on health care than any other nation. Concerned about this divergence, the National Institute on Aging asked the National Research Council to examine evidence on its possible causes. According to Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries, the nation's history of heavy smoking is a major reason why lifespans in the United States fall short of those in many other high-income nations. Evidence suggests that current obesity levels play a substantial part as well. The book reports that lack of universal access to health care in the U.S. also has increased mortality and reduced life expectancy, though this is a less significant factor for those over age 65 because of Medicare access. For the main causes of death at older ages -- cancer and cardiovascular disease -- available indicators do not suggest that the U.S. health care system is failing to prevent deaths that would be averted elsewhere. In fact, cancer detection and survival appear to be better in the U.S. than in most other high-income nations, and survival rates following a heart attack also are favorable. Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries identifies many gaps in research. For instance, while lung cancer deaths are a reliable marker of the damage from smoking, no clear-cut marker exists for obesity, physical inactivity, social integration, or other risks considered in this book. Moreover, evaluation of these risk factors is based on observational studies, which -- unlike randomized controlled trials -- are subject to many biases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody wants to get old. And why would we? The aging process eventually affects every one of our body systems - from mental function and sexual performance to physical appearance, ability, and strength. But chronological age has little to do with a person's biological age: some people are old at fifty, while others are still sharp and spry at ninety. The things we've always considered ''normal aging'' are actually caused by physiological problems that, in many cases, respond to medical treatment and healthy lifestyle habits. As a result, the human life span can be significantly increased while maintaining - or even improving - the quality of life! This contemporary approach to aging - known as anti-aging medicine - is a specialty practiced by more than 30,000 physicians worldwide. It uses advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases. In the near future, we can look forward to boundless health and vitality thanks to these anti-aging approaches. You can start by enjoying 121 Ways to Live 121 Years ... and More! - a handbook for living a long and healthy life.

Book excerpt: This book offers advice to people who would like to hopefully increase their longevity and have as much enjoyment and fulfi llment out of life as possible. I present an honest and commonsense approach on how to remain as healthy as theoretically possible while keeping some credibility and satisfaction in life. I provide many recommendations that deal with real-life situations instead of fantasies and present conclusions based on my having personally performed over 1,500 autopsies and my own deleterious consequences of having developed atherosclerotic disease from being over four hundred pounds for over thirty years. In this book, I detail a very strict diet plan, the perfect diet, which I created, that resulted in my losing 272 pounds over a ten-month period, and whereby my continued adherence has allowed me to be able to maintain this weight. However, I relate the many problems that I developed in following such a rigorous diet program and offer prophylactic advice to people electing to lose weight extremely fast so that they wont encounter the same problems. I also provide some very inexpensive and easy-to-prepare low-calorie recipes that I concocted which are good appetizers and fi ller-uppers. In my usual witty, satiric manner, I discuss many dangerous drugs that should be avoided and mention several foods that should be eliminated from a persons diet, along with furnishing some of my own little homemade poems along the way. Through my experiences as having served as coroner, I disclose many hazards that exist in our environment, mention some simple things that people tend to forget that, too often, result in fatalities, and present my views of many of the over-the-counter products. By making overweight and diabetic individuals aware of certain physiological processes that are continuously occurring in our bodies, hopefully they would be in a better position to understand and interpret my suggestions. In brief, I have something to offer all my readers from the most radicalmy diet planto the most realistic and conservative. In a nutshell, I lived through what I now advocate against, since I discovered too late what obesity could do to the human body.
