Book Synopsis Sermons and Discourses, 1743-1758 by : Jonathan Edwards
Download or read book Sermons and Discourses, 1743-1758 written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging volume covers the final fifteen of the thirty-three years that Jonathan Edwards preached and includes some of his greatest sermons--including his Farewell Sermons to his Northampton congregation. The period is defined by Edwards' inventive strategies to improvise during the delivery of his sermons. Considering dependence on the written text in the pulpit to be a serious failing, he devised a double-columned, outlined format for his sermon manuscripts and continued to use it for the rest of his life. Sermons from this period also include those preached to Mahican and Mohawk Indians at the mission post of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Edwards' various writings of 1743-58 map the complex terrain of his spiritual, intellectual, and professional life after the Great Awakening. He deals with topics ranging from the spiritual role of youth in the community to the struggles over communion in his Northampton congregation to the war with the French and their Indian allies.

Book Synopsis Who Can Take the Lord's Supper? by : Dallas W. Vandiver
Download or read book Who Can Take the Lord's Supper? written by Dallas W. Vandiver and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are likely more basic for the church than you think. When Jesus inaugurated the new covenant by his death on the cross, he established baptism as the new covenant sign of entry and the Lord’s Supper as the new covenant sign of participation. These signs identify believers with Christ and his people. They are integral to the existence, membership, and discipline of the local church. In answer to the question “Who can take the Lord’s Supper?” this book catalogues four major positions in the broad Baptist tradition. While proponents of various views have appealed to the necessity of circumcision for participation in Passover as evidence for their position, none have adequately worked out the covenantal relationships between circumcision and baptism or Passover and the Lord’s Supper. By contrast to Reformed pedobaptist covenantal theology and in distinction from Baptist covenantal theology and dispensational theologies, this book develops the relation of these covenantal signs from a progressive-covenantal perspective. It presents an unprecedented comparison of the continuities and discontinuities between the covenant signs across the storyline of Scripture to demonstrate a biblical-theological principle that the sign of entry should precede the sign of participation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Lima Declarations of Convergence in 1982, no other document in the international ecumenical movement has dealt with Eucharistic communion at the celebration of the Lord's Supper in remembrance of the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. On the occasion of the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 2022 in Karlsruhe, ecumenically minded Protestant, Free Church, Old Catholic, Roman Catholic and Orthodox theologians from Germany have taken up this topic afresh. They provide insights into the current state of ecumenical conversations, present the various traditions of confessional worship and offer practical suggestions for an ecumenically sensitive liturgical practice. The German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA) contributes a joint statement on the subject. Memories of the 3rd Ecumenical Kirchentag (Church Congress) 2021 in Frankfurt am Main are revived. The decision to go to the Lord's Table together, trusting in the presence of Jesus Christ in the celebration of Holy Communion, Eucharist and Holy Sacrifice, can be justified theologically, but continues to raise controversy. On the Sunday of the Assembly in Karlsruhe, September 4, 2022, a rich range of liturgies will commemorate the life of Jesus, his death for us, and the sending of God's Spirit. Together, all churches testify that ``The love of Christ moves, reconciles and unites the world.'' Hacik Gazer, Professor of History and Theology of Eastern Christianity at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg; Armenian Apostolic theologian. Markus Iff, Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecumenics at the Theological Seminary of Ewersbach; pastor in the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches. Werner Klän, retired Professor of Church History and Systematic Theology; pastor of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dorothea Sattler, Professor of Ecumenical Theology and Dogmatics at the University of M"unster; Roman Catholic theologian.

Book Synopsis In the Name of Our Lord by : Jonathan D. Watson
Download or read book In the Name of Our Lord written by Jonathan D. Watson and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is a member of the church? Christians divide on how one enters the church body. Matters are quickly complicated once other factors are considered, such as faith, instruction, baptism, first communion, and formal membership. Who should be baptized? What role does instruction play? And what is the best order of these things? Jonathan D. Watson's In the Name of Our Lord provides an explanatory typology and incisive analysis for thinking through these interrelated questions. Watson's four--model framework accounts for the major historical varieties of relationship between baptism and catechesis as initiation into the church. With this framework in place, Watson then considers each model in relation to one another. With a guide to navigating the terrain, readers can comprehend, compare, and contrast these different theological formulations. Readers will have a sophisticated but clear system for thinking through foundational matters that are important to every pastor and congregant.
