Book excerpt: International trade is a key dimension of the world economy, it is a critical factor in raising living standards, increasing employment, and providing a larger variety of goods to consumers around the world. Despite the strong focus that international trade research has received in theoretical terms, the empirical aspects of trade are less clear and justify further research. In this context, it is essential for studies to focus on shedding light on the most important methods used to evaluate the multiple dimensions of trade within this international context. Trade has a myriad of direct and indirect effects, therefore touching several fields of research, including economics, management, finance, international relations, political science, and sociology, which makes it essential to explore. The Handbook of Research on the Empirical Aspects of Strategic Trade Negotiations and Management provides a systematic overview of the latest trends in the empirical analysis of trade from international perspectives. It provides a survey on the methods used to evaluate a specific topic in international trade, enhance knowledge about the multiple facets of international trade around the world, and grant in-depth surveys of previous empirical findings on specific topics in international trade. Important topics covered within this book include trade diversification, regional centrality, ethical pricing, globalization, cultural impacts, and open economies. This book is a valuable reference tool for government officials, policy makers, managers, executives, economists, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students.

Book excerpt: Today's children will reach adulthood in an economic environment unlike anything the world has ever seen. The 21st century global economy is powered by an increasing rate of technological change as well as growing foreign competition; both are contributing to the high U.S. unemployment rate and stagnating American wages. How can we as parents prepare our children for success in this growing maelstrom that many are now calling "the new normal"? In "Thriving in the 21st Century: Preparing Our Children for the New Economic Reality," Barbara Frank demonstrates that we must move beyond the common wisdom of the 20th century that emphasized a college diploma and lifelong employment with a large company as the only way to success. Instead, we need to set our children on a new path, one that will help them not just survive, but thrive in the 21st century. In this book, you'll learn: The Seven Strengths your child will need to prosper in the 21st century, why they're needed and how you can develop them in your children The most efficient (and increasingly popular) way to give your child those Seven Strengths Why public education has failed to prepare our children for the 21st century How we can help our children become the lifelong learners needed in a rapidly changing global economy The surprising truth about today's colleges and universities How economic change is affecting a variety of career areas, and which of them are projected to grow dramatically in the coming years. This book is packed with ideas and resources for raising our children to become adults who respond proactively when faced with economic challenges, and who can prosper during times of great change. We can help our children reach young adulthood ready and able to tackle the future with all its challenges. And that, of course, is the key: we must prepare our children for the future...not the past.

Book excerpt: The central economic competitiveness issue for the Obama administration is creating an aligned, 21st century public education system that prepares students, workers and citizens to triumph in the global skills race. On Jan. 20, 2009, the Obama administration will take command of the White House facing unprecedented challenges to the U.S. economy and competitiveness. Americans are hungry for visionary presidential leadership, foresighted policies and bold actions that will strengthen economic opportunities and security at home and build collaboration abroad. There is widespread consensus, however, that the education and workforce development systems are failing to adequately prepare all students and workers with the essential skills--21st century skills--necessary for success in a global economy. The country needs a fresh approach to education that recalibrates workforce preparation to the demands of a 21st century economy built on information, knowledge, innovation and creativity. To that end, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills offers three specific recommendations to President Obama and the new administration: (1) Lead: Advocate 21st century skills as a major theme of this presidency, beginning with the Inaugural Address and a White House Summit on 21st Century Skills in 2009; (2) Mobilize: Coordinate the policies and actions of federal agencies in promoting and creating an aligned, 21st century public education and workforce development system, including the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and other federal legislation; and (3) Empower: Support states and communities with investments to build a strong infrastructure and capacity for preparing students, workers and citizens with 21st century skills. If adopted, the policy recommendations in this transition brief will put the administration on the right track--and position the nation for a second century of American leadership around the world.
