Book excerpt: Today’s energy needs are presenting challenges which have to be addressed with novel, as well as sustainable and efficient solutions. Within this context, the family of metal oxide (MO) materials offers a broad diversity of both structural and physicochemical properties, along with great versatility of synthesis. Nanoscale MO particles can be decorated with other nanoparticles, particularly of metals, and new properties may arise from such combinations. The present dissertation work reports the details of the development of an experimental method to accomplish the decoration of MO materials with metal species originated by an effusive source, along with the characterization of the decorated materials’ properties. A custom-made vacuum chamber was optimized with several components (e.g. a calibration sensor to measure the effusive beam’s flux; a conical vessel to mix and expose the MO powders to such beam) and utilized to produce different decorated materials. The pure MO materials were synthesized as high-quality, size-selected particles with a patented method. Due to their different structure and optoelectronic character, magnesium (MgO) and zinc (ZnO) oxide were chosen as substrates to explore this novel decoration process; while copper, nickel and cobalt were selected as the decorating metal species, offering the opportunity to study not yet fully understood transition metal electronic properties. The several examples of newly formed materials were characterized using different techniques, in particular X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (reflectance was then converted into absorbance). These techniques revealed trends in some properties of the novel materials, and were paired with more microscopic probes, namely magnetization and electron microscopy measurements. Great emphasis was put on the Cu/MgO system. In particular, Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy has shown clear presence of metal deposits of copper on the MgO surfaces, confirming the results gained with the previous techniques. Furthermore, a computer code was developed to facilitate the pore size distribution analysis obtained on mesoporous substrates. Several different materials were studied, in order to show the viability of the automated process, and the potential applicability of this method to studying porous structures for the same decoration process described earlier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrothermal method has proven to be an excellent method for the synthesis of novel metal oxides and vanadates. This research pertains to the synthesis of novel lead chlorovanadate compound and of a known alkali metal trivanadate compound, KV3O8 by hydrothermal method This method has been used to synthesize many inorganic oxide compounds Hydrothermal synthesis is the use of aqueous solvents under high temperature and high pressure to dissolve and recrystallize materials. Compounds with interesting structure and physical properties are often obtained from this technique that is known as one of the low-temperature synthesis techniques for solid state compounds. There are many studies that have been done on oxides in the Pb-V-O systems There are also many vanadium oxides containing Pb, V, O elements in Pb-V-O system such as Pb1.32V8.35O16.7, PbV6O11, PbV2O6, Pb2V3O8.5, and .-PbxV2O5 bronzes (x = 0.3). In an attempt to synthesize vanadium oxides at low temperature, we were able to obtain needle shaped yellow crystals of PbVO3Cl. In the nature, there is a kombatite mineral, Pb14(VO4)2O9Cl4, with the same composition of elements. A new lead chlorovanadate, PbVO3Cl, was obtained from the reaction of NaVO3 and PbCl2 in aqueous solution of B(OH)3. The compound was prepared in an autoclave that was filled with aqueous solution of B(OH)3 and heated at 170oC for 3 days. The compound crystallizes in the space group Pnma of the orthorhombic system with formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 10.022(2)

Book excerpt: The present thesis deals with the synthesis and structural characterization of transition metals doped cobalt and manganese based spinel oxides MxCo2-xMnO4 (with M = Ni, Cu, Zn and x = 0, 0.15, 0.30, 0.60), in relationships with their conduction and optical properties. These materials are good p-type semiconductors and light absorbers in the UV and visible regions, therefore interesting for photo-catalysis and photovoltaics. The first chapter is a brief overview of the energy context and nature of global warming, renewable energy resources and a literature review of materials used for solar cells including the newly studied system type based on all-oxide photovoltaics. Chapter two presents all the experimental methods and characterization techniques used for this research work. The inorganic polycondensation method optimized in our laboratory and used for synthesizing spinel oxide powders at low temperature (T

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samples of cubic zirconium oxide containing up to almost 10 atomic percent cobalt were prepared by codecomposition of the nitrate. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed the limit of solubility and the presence of the cobalt as Co(II). The reduction of the cobalt inserted in cubic zirconia took place at a considerably higher temperature than bulk cobalt oxide. Cubic Zro2 samples containing some transition metal oxides including rhodium oxide (1), iron oxide (2), chromium oxide (3) and nickel oxide (4) were studied previously in this laboratory. Their structures, magnetic properties and the stabilities towards reduction have been studied. Zro2 is characteristic of an absence of reaction between the ZrO2 support and the catalyst. It is the purpose of this work to investigate the formation of solid solution between ZrO2 and cobalt oxide and to study the magnetic properties of such a system. In addition, the stability towards reduction of cubic Zro2 samples containing various concentrations of reacted cobalt oxide will be determined.

Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials with tailored properties are regarded as a fundamental element in the development of future science and technology. Research is still ongoing into the nanosized construction elements required to create functional solids. The recently developed technique, nanocasting, has great advantage over others in terms of the synthesis of special nanostructured materials by the careful choice of suitable elements and nanoengineering steps. This new book summarizes the recent developments in nanocasting, including the principles of nanocasting, syntheses of novel nanostructured materials, characterization methods, detailed synthetic recipes and further possible development in this area. The book focuses on the synthesis of porous solids from the viewpoint of methodology and introduces the science of nanocasting from fundamental principles to their use in synthesis of various materials. It starts by outlining the principles of nanocasting, requirements to the templates and precursors and the tools needed to probe matter at the nanoscale level. It describes how to synthesize nano structured porous solids with defined characteristics and finally discusses the functionalization and application of porous solids. Special attention is given to new developments in this field and future perspectives. A useful appendix covering the detailed synthetic recipes of various templates including porous silica, porous carbon and colloidal spheres is included which will be invaluable to researchers wanting to follow and reproduce nanocast materials. Topics covered in the book include: * inorganic chemistry * organic chemistry * solution chemistry * sol-gel and interface science * acid-base equilibria * electrochemistry * biochemistry * confined synthesis The book gives readers not only an overview of nanocasting technology, but also sufficient information and knowledge for those wanting to prepare various nanostructured materials without needing to search the available literature.
