Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of concrete patches in continuously reinforced concrete pavement in Virginia varies from less than 1 year to many years. The purpose of this study was to determine the causes of premature repair failure in continuously reinforced concrete pavement. Four pavement sections were monitored for patching operations. Mixture designs had high cementitious material contents. The patches were typically constructed with a short lane closure time, often at night, with only about 5 to 8 hours of cure time before opening of the roadway to traffic. The strengths were determined using the temperature matched curing system. The observations and testing indicated that the two of the most significant causes for premature failure were (1) the use of high early strength concrete mixtures with high cement contents that cause excessive thermal and shrinkage cracking, and (2) failure to assess the overall pavement condition, which could have led to an overlay with structural improvement rather than just patching. Some other areas of concern were cutting of the continuous reinforcement, reestablishing the continuity of the reinforcement in the patch, damaging concrete adjacent to the patch during concrete removal, poor concreting practice with respect to proper consolidation of the concrete near the joint, and opening to traffic before adequate concrete strength was achieved. Based on these findings, the study recommended revisions to future special provisions for concrete patching and the VDOT Materials Division Manual of Instructions, Chapter 6.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.

Book excerpt: Understanding and recognising failure mechanisms in concrete is a fundamental pre-requisite to determining the type of repair, or whether a repair is feasible. This title provides a review of concrete deterioration and damage, as well as looking at the problem of defects in concrete. It also discusses condition assessment and repair techniques. Part one discusses failure mechanisms in concrete and covers topics such as causes and mechanisms of deterioration in reinforced concrete, types of damage in concrete structures, types and causes of cracking and condition assessment of concrete structures. Part two reviews the repair of concrete structures with coverage of themes such as standards and guidelines for repairing concrete structures, methods of crack repair, repair materials, bonded concrete overlays, repairing and retrofitting concrete structures with fiber-reinforced polymers, patching deteriorated concrete structures and durability of repaired concrete. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Failure and repair of concrete structures is a standard reference for civil engineers, architects and anyone working in the construction sector, as well as those concerned with ensuring the safety of concrete structures. Provides a review of concrete deterioration and damage Discusses condition assessment and repair techniques, standards and guidelines

Book excerpt: This document serves as the Reference Manual for the 1 1/2 -day FHWA workshop on concrete pavement preservation. The purpose of the document is to provide the most up-to-date information available on the design, construction, and selection of cost-effective concrete pavement preservation strategies. It concentrates primarily on strategies and methods that are applicable at the project level, and not at the network level, where pavement management activities function and address such issues as prioritizing and budgeting. Detailed information is presented on seven specific concrete pavement preservation treatments: slab stabilization, partial-depth repairs, full-depth repairs, retrofitted edge drains, load transfer restoration, diamond grinding, and joint resealing. In addition, information is provided on pavement evaluation techniques and strategy selection procedures.

Strengthening and retrofitting are major themes in this volume, with NDT and electrochemical repair following closely, discussing the latest advances and technologies in concrete repair. The book brings together some interesting and challenging theoretical approaches and questions if we really understand and approach such topics as corrosion monitoring correctly. Concrete Solutions is an essential reference work for those working in the concrete repair field, from engineers to architects and from students to clients. The Concrete Solutions Series of international conferences on concrete repair began in 2003 with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes. Subsequent conferences have seen the Series partnering with the University of Padua (Italy) in 2009, with TU Dresden (Germany) in 2011 and with Queen’s University Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 2014. In 2016 Thessaloniki (Greece) hosted the conference, partnering with both Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). The next conference in the series will be held in 2019 in Istanbul.

Book excerpt: Around 50% of Europe's annual construction budget is spent on refurbishment and repair of existing structures. This report is the culmination of a wide-ranging survey into the performance of both current European concrete repair techniques and inspection practice, and current research projects. It assesses case histories gathered from across the sector from owners of concrete structures, repairers and research institutes, and presents its findings using charts, graphs, tables and photographs. A review of the problems of concrete durability, current issues of sustainability, and the differing expectations of what concrete repairs should acheive, provide an insightful introduction to the subject. The survey was conducted by the CONREPNET network, made up of European research and representative bodies sponsored by the European Commission.
