Book excerpt: The report describes and presents the results of a flight research program to investigate the effect of horizontal thrust augmentation from an auxiliary jet engine on the maneuverability and dynamic stability of the UH-2 helicopter. The effect of transient and steady state load factors on the air-speed envelope, as limited by retreating blade stall, was examined for three values of thrust augmentation. The onset of blade stall is shown to be delayed to higher airspeed by the application of thrust augmentation; the extent of the delay increases with load factor. For a given amount of thrust augmentation, the load factor in transient maneuvers is shown to be higher than for steady accelerated flight conditions. The dynamic response of the helicopter in pitch and yaw to simulated gust inputs was examined for various combinations of thrust augmentation and airspeed. Thrust augmentation tends to decrease control sensitivity and to provide increased damping about both pitch and yaw axes following a disturbance. Qualitative pilot opinion indicates that the helicopter is generally easier to fly as thrust augmentation is added. (Author).

Particularly with respect to maneuvers. Rotors with standard UH-1B and tapered tip blades were evaluated. With the tapered tip blades, the compound helicopter was flown to a true air-speed of 221 knots and the rise in power required and rotor controls load associated with compressibility was delayed by about .05 Mach number. Approximately 55 maneuvers, encompassing a velocity-normal acceleration envelope exceeding 2g's at 190 knots, were accomplished. The distribution of lift between the wing and rotor is defined and it is shown that the rotor provides the largest increase of normal load factor during the maneuver. Normal maneuver and structural limited rotor thrust coefficients are defined as a function of advance ratio and rotor propulsive force. Although rotor system dynamics, blade twist, planform, airfoil, etc., will influence these values of limiting thrust coefficients, it is believed that with proper interpretation the limits shown are generally applicable to all rotorcraft. The objectives of the test were to define the increased performance, to evaluate the engine characteristics and to investigate the flying qualities resulting from the expanded flight envelope. One hundred and fifteen data flights were conducted from December 1966 to August 1967 accounting for 98 productive flight hours. Testing was conducted in California at Edwards Air Force Base and at auxiliary test sites at Bakersfield and Bishop. Helicopter performance was quantitatively defined for hover, takeoff, climb and level flights. Engine characteristics and helicopter flying qualities were determined quantitatively at specific flight conditions and were qualitatively investigated throughout the operating flight envelope. The performance of the UH-1D was significantly improved by the installation of the higher powered T53-L-13 engine which resulted in an increased weight, temperature and altitude flight envelope. The T53-L-13 engine demonstrated good dynamic characteristics except for instability at topping power and poor static characteristics. In general, the helicopter flying qualities were acceptable in forward flight. During low-speed flight and hover, the left directional control margin was inadequate. At a forward center of gravity, the helicopter has insufficient aft longitudinal control. To safely use the increased flight envelope, the control deficiencies must be corrected.

The UH-1B equipped with floatation landing gear could be flown with reasonable safety within a restricted flight envelope compared with a standard UH-1B. The water handling characteristics were considered excellent. Several warning statements and notations describing peculiarities in handling quantities were recommended for insertion in the Operator's Manual for operating UH-1B's with floatation landing gear. A restricted flight envelope was recommended for the UH-1B equipped with floatation landing gear. The performance test results were recommended for incorporation in the Operator's Manual.

Testing consisted of 42 productive flight hours. When the XM-47 mine dispensing subsystem was installed on the UH-1B helicopter, antipersonnel mines could be safely dispersed within the recommended flight envelopes. In cases of emergency the dispensers could be safely jettisoned within the recommended envelopes. Jettisons during entry into autorotation and in close proximity to the ground should be avoided. The flying qualities of the UH-1B were essentially unaffected by the installation of the XM-47 mine dispensing subsystem.
