Book excerpt: Preliminary airworthiness flight tests were conducted at West Palm Beach, FL, (elevation 28 feet). Tests totaling 22.4 hours of productive flight time were conducted to determine handling qualities and performance of the UH- 60A in the VOLCANO system configuration at an average mission gross weight of 20,500 pounds and a longitudinal center of gravity at fuselage station 351.0 The handling qualities of the UH-60A with the VOLCANO system, installed were similar to the normal utility UH-60A. Three shortcomings were noted in this configuration: 1) the increased frequency and magnitude of 'tail shake' with the VOLCANO installed; 2) the position error for the ship's airspeed system was increased by approximately 8 knots at higher speeds (120 KCAS) due to the installation of the VOLCANO mine dispensing system; and 3) Stability Augmentation System (SAS) OFF dynamic response, not attributed to the VOLCANO installation, was aperiodic and divergent. The UH-60A helicopter with VOLCANO failed to meet two requirements of the Prime Item Development Specification; however, these noncompliances were not significant. Recommendations were made to incorporate data into the applicable portion of the VOLCANO operator's manual and to conduct additional testing. Keywords: Flight testing; Aerial mine dispensers; Helicopters.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A limited evaluation of the UH-60A helicopter with XM-139 Multiple Delivery Mine Dispensing System (VOLCANO) was conducted to determine the capability to operate safely in a moderate environment. Artificial and natural icing tests were conducted at Duluth, Minnesota from 10 January through 22 February 1988. Testing was conducted by the U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity and consisted of 16.4 productive flight hours. One deficiency related to inadequate procedures in the operator's and crewmember's checklist was identified. The checklist does not contain procedures to activate anti-icing systems. Two shortcomings were identified that involved the ice accretion characteristics of the VOLCANO. Ice accretion on the mounting hardware kit interferes with reinstalling the launcher rack jettison safety pins due to ice covering the safety pin holes. Ice accretion on the forward end of the launcher racks interferes with movement of the arming levers and locking levers to the safe and unlocked positions, respectively. The probability of damage to rotating components, due to impact with shed ice particles in descents is increased with the installation of the VOLCANO. The UH-60A helicopter with the VOLCANO system installed can safely operate in moderate icing conditions.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-60A Configured with the External Stores Support System (ESSS). by : Arthur R. Marshall
Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-60A Configured with the External Stores Support System (ESSS). written by Arthur R. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-60A helicopter configured with the External Stores Support System was conducted. A total of 26 test flights were conducted. Limited level flight performance tests were conducted to determine the change in drag of the UH-60A helicopter caused by three External Stores Support System configurations with various stores installed. An unexplained increase in power required was found between the Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation test aircraft and the aircraft used during a previous Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics evaluation.
Book Synopsis Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of UH-60A with an Improved Airspeed System by : M. L. Hanks
Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of UH-60A with an Improved Airspeed System written by M. L. Hanks and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity supported a contractor engineering effort to correct the nose-down pitch-over during takeoff and the large, variable position error in the low-speed flight regime of the UH-60A (Black Hawk) helicopter. A Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation was then conducted with the improved airspeed and stabilator systems in their final configuration as defined by the contractor. Handling qualities and airspeed system characteristics were evaluated for two modified overhead and one nose probe configuration. In addition, airspeed system tests were conducted on a second nose probe configuration. Four shortcomings applicable to the modified overhead probe systems were identified as follows: (1) the annoying longitudinal control, stabilator angle, and indicated airspeed reversals resulting in pitch attitude oscillations during takeoff (upgraded from a deficiency in the standard production aircraft); (2) the high pilot workload required to maintain precise airspeed during transitions to high power, low airspeed climbs; (3) the large, variable airspeed position errors; and (4) unreliable airspeed indications in low airspeed, high power climbs. For the modified overhead probe systems the following should be accomplished: (1) evaluate the proposed installation on the External Stores Support System UH-60 helicopter, and (2) evaluate the proposed installation on an extremely light gross weight UH-60 helicopter.
Book Synopsis Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-60A External Fuel System by : Michael K. Herbst
Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-60A External Fuel System written by Michael K. Herbst and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testing was conducted to determine the effects of the installation of the External Fuel System (EFS) on the performance and handling qualities of the UH-60A helicopter. A total of 27 productive flight hours were flown at Edwards Air Force Base, California between 21 March and 20 May 1988. The evaluation did not reveal any problems that should preclude airworthiness qualification. The installation of the EFS with two 230-gallon tanks caused an increase in power required to hover in ground effect (10-foot wheel height) and out of ground effect of approximately 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively. The change in equivalent flat plate area in the EFS configuration with two 230-gallon tanks varied from 6.2 to 12.4 square feet when compared to the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration. The drag of the UH-60A in the EFS configuration with two 230-gallon tanks is significantly increased when the cargo doors and gunner windows are open. Three shortcomings and two Prime Item Development Specification noncompliances were identified during the handling qualities evaluation of the UH-60A in the EFS configuration. Two of the shortcomings have been noted during previous evaluations of the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration. Handling qualities were not significantly different than those of the UH-60A in the normal utility configuration.
