This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced English Pronunciation has been designed to meet the needs of foreign language learners with at least upper-intermediate proficiency (CEFR level B2) who want not only to improve their pronunciation, but also to acquire a solid understanding of the rules and rationale of English pronunciation. University students who are considering a career in teaching as well as practising English teachers who wish to perfect their pronunciation will appreciate the value of this dual objective. Key Features: · The twenty recorded lessons with worksheets are suitable for self-study (ideally with a computer) or group work with a teacher (in a language lab). · Each lesson is designed to last approximately 50 minutes. . The book is divided into four parts, addressing all major aspects of English pronunciation - rhythm and weak forms, word stress, spelling-pronunciation rules, intonation and linking. · The characteristic rhythm of English, an important but often neglected aspect of pronunciation, is dealt with right from the start, in the first three lessons. · Basic work on intonation is integrated into each lesson and then reviewed and expanded upon in the final two lessons. · Seven different native English speakers from England have been used for the recordings, representing standard, educated varieties of British English as spoken by people whose origins range from Bournemouth on the south coast to Carlisle near the Scottish border. · An innovative exercise design allows the learner to evaluate his or her knowledge as the exercise is carried out. The learner is able to quickly assess which points he or she must continue to work on as well as which points he or she has mastered. · The exercises are varied and designed to promote active learning. · Brief musical interludes consisting of original recordings by clarinet and cello signal the beginning of each exercise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this collection celebrates the life and work of Professor A. C. Gimson, four years after his untimely death in 1985. A. C. Gimson, Professor of Phonetics at University College London, 1966-83, was the most distinguished and influential phonetician of his day concentrating specifically on English speech. This collection of essays on phonetics and phonology of English- written by linguists from all over the world – celebrates his life and work. The work is divided into five sections: prosody; phonology and phonetic description; accents of English and RP; other accents of English (focusing on those non-native speakers); and phonostylistics. The twenty-eight chapters cover a very wide range of topics and the contributors offer a stimulating variety of approaches, with the emphasis on data-based objectivity. Balancing description and theory with application, this volume provides a serious and coherent contribution to the academic study of English pronunciation.

Book excerpt: Since this classic work in phonology was published in 1968, there has been no other book that gives as broad a view of the subject, combining generally applicable theoretical contributions with analysis of the details of a single language. The theoretical issues raised in The Sound Pattern of English continue to be critical to current phonology, and in many instances the solutions proposed by Chomsky and Halle have yet to be improved upon.Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle are Institute Professors of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luigi Burzio's Principles of English Stress challenges many of the assumptions that have underpinned the generative description of English stress and more generally 'standard' metrical theory. Central to Burzio's analysis is a novel typology of metrical constituents that includes ternary feet and excludes monosyllabic feet. The analysis is essentially nonderivational in character: principles of well-formedness check for the presence of stress and weight in the output. The principles themselves are organized into a hierarchy consisting of a hardcore-controlling foot form that in cases of conflict may override principles of metrical consistency and alignment of edges. The interplay among these competing principles accounts for the cyclic effects of the standard theory. A special role is accorded phonetically null syllables that analyse hidden metrical structure to preserve a simple foot inventory and sharply curtail the standard theory's extrametricality.

Book excerpt: This monograph studies research conducted for the purpose of investigating the relationship between vocabulary recognition and morphological knowledge during the early and middle elementary school years. The findings suggest that lexical development can be characterized in terms of increasing morphological complexity, and as a child ages, the proportion of known complex words that the child figured out by analyzing their morphological structure increased.
